I think regardless of which side you were on we can all agree this was B.S. now.

not if he shuffles them off to terrorists....we`ll have to wait and see whether those camps in the north were al qaeda....they supposedly found some stashes and documents that might prove interesting.....again,we`ll see.....the end game won`t happen overnight......

imminent

\Im"mi*nent\, a. [L. imminens, p. pr. of imminere to project; pref. im- in + minere (in comp.) to jut, project. See Eminent.] 1. Threatening to occur immediately; near at hand; impending; -- said especially of misfortune or peril. ``In danger imminent.'' --Spenser.

2. Full of danger; threatening; menacing; perilous.

Hairbreadth scapes i' the imminent deadly breach. --Shak.

3. (With upon) Bent upon; attentive to. [R.]

Their eyes ever imminent upon worldly matters. --Milton.

Syn: Impending; threatening; near; at hand.

Usage: Imminent, Impending, Threatening. Imminent is the strongest: it denotes that something is ready to fall or happen on the instant; as, in imminent danger of one's life. Impending denotes that something hangs suspended over us, and may so remain indefinitely; as, the impending evils of war. Threatening supposes some danger in prospect, but more remote; as, threatening indications for the future.

Three times to-day You have defended me from imminent death. --Shak.

No story I unfold of public woes, Nor bear advices of impending foes. --Pope.

Fierce faces threatening war. --Milton.

********

I would say that of the three synonymous usages in the example above, that "threatening" is about the best you could do for an al-Qaeda attack on the US using Iraqi-supplied chemical, biological or nuclear weapons. Bump it up to an al-Qaeda attack on US interests abroad using an '88 Fiat loaded down with C4 moves it up a notch to "impending" (as in, "the impending threat of terrorism.") But be realistic -- if HUssein has the weapons, if Hussein would give or sell them to the al-Qaeda, the al-Qaeda must still gothrough the monumentally complicated task of figuring out some manner of disbursement and then manage to successfully pull it off. Naturally the uber-Rechts will scoff at this and point to various successful al-Qaeda attacks as evidence of their "might," but really, you're showing an awful lack of respect and faith in your vaunted country to run scared from phantom al-Qaeda attacks IMHO.

(PS. Not you in particular sphincter; if I remember correctly you are in fact British and not a member of the elite uber-Recht neofascist "patriots" who shame their forefathers by claiming such lofty status for themselves.)

were the planes that crashed into the world trade center imminent, impending or threatening?.......don`t think i used any of these terms in my response to grant......

the other mistake was that i`m american, not british......although i`d be very proud to be british....

and i try to address this issue honestly....and with as much objectivity as i can muster(which i admit sadly,is not as much as i`d like, regarding this issue)

and i have not addressed anyone that has disagreement with my ideology as "neofascist" or any other simple label that demeans them or their point of view.....

Patriot, I very much doubt that anyone at the Pentagon would have laughed. The use of airplanes as ballistic weapons had been discussed at some length at the DoD for years, especially after the uncovering of the so-called Bojinka (sp.?) plot after the arrest of Ramsi Youssef.

Terrorists are called "terrorists" istead of "little fluffy bunnies" because they do things that are terrifying in order to further their own cause. Often their attempts fail, because they tend ot live in a fantasy world in which all other people are mere figments of the unfolding drama. There is a more or less constant threat of a terrorist attack of some sort, somewhere in the world, at any given time. It was there prior to 11 September 2001; most Americans simply hadn't noticed it. Unfortunately it's going to happen again, here and elsewhere, and happen in the next generation, and the one after that. Terror is as terror does.

My point, which was as I said stipulative, was simply that Iraq's possible possesion of chemical or biological weapons does not represent an "imminent" threat to America. Not that terrorist attacks themselves are not bad or not ever going to happen.

Incidentally, your handle actually did not occur to me in my side message to sphincter. I am certain that you will agree that there are people on tis forum who posture themselves as patriotic Americans yet advocate the most rash anti-American policies imaginable, both domestic and foreign.

UB, you could have stopped reading at any time. In fact why are you reading this now? Oh well.

sphincter, I addressed my classification of the plane attacks on 11 September 2001 above. Not sure why I thought you were British; for some reason I actually thought I saw you say that somewhere. My mistake.

People who disagree with me are not called "neofascists" ... that's the sort of thing the neofascist dipsh*ts who poopulate this forum would do. I was referring to a handful of specific posters with whom it is not worth getting into a flame war, and so I don't name them by name.
