Um Mr Potato head, the previous guy was pro-Syrian too.
That's the guy that got blown up.

The Lebanese are REALLY pissed off.

The guy was a bit of a hero, bringing Lebanon back to stability after years of civil war.

If they find out who did it, the CIA, Mossad, the Syrians whoever, I wouldn't want to be in their shoes.

Its not the anti-Syrians that are angry, they are a subset that people like FauxNews focus on.
Its the Lebanese population that's angry.
Some eejit has blown up a very respected Lebanese politician who led their country out of the dark times of the 70's and 80's.

It looks like the Lebanese believe that the Syrians were connected to it.
The Syrian presence was tolerated in the past by the general population at large, but not so after this event it seems.

Someone blew up the Lebanese Nelson Mandela and they are not happy about it.

This is a bit like that bomb in Spain that swung the election and effected a sea-change with Spanish involvement in Iraq.

Its fun to watch people twist a good story into a bad one. My best friend from graduate school is lebanese (and half palestinian) and he thinks this is a wonderful thing. I am not sure if we can give bush full credit for this but to blow it off as a non-event is insane. This is monumental in that region. Not to mention what is happening in egypt and among the palestinians and what is developing in saudi arabia

The problem is finding a decent replacement, the bloke that got blown up was probaly going to make a political comeback and lead the independence movement.

Will be interesting to see what unfolds.

Don't blame Eek Patriot....he's been busy lobbying for higher taxes to get their 11% unemployment rate down. He's also working with the unions to shorten the work-week and increase vacation time so employers have to higher more people...to reduce the unemployment rate. After that he's planning an economics lecture for us Yanks.

Anyway just found this.
Troop withdrawal

Earlier, US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State David Satterfield met Lebanese Foreign Minister Mahmoud Hammoud.

He said he reiterated Washington's demand that Syria comply with UN resolution 1559, passed in September, calling for the withdrawal of its troops from Lebanon.

"We want to see free and fair elections take place [in Lebanon] this spring," he said.

The current crisis was sparked by the murder of Mr Hariri

"It's important that steps take place on the ground prior to those elections including the beginning of the implementation of Resolution 1559."

Syrian Foreign Minister Farouk al-Sharaa has rejected calls for a full withdrawal from Lebanon, saying this is something not even the Lebanese want. Damascus said last week that it would draw it troops back from western Lebanon to areas nearer the Syrian border, though it did not specify when.<!-- E BO -->

been seeing some reports of up to 200,000 are protesting for the Syrians to get the fxck out.

I can't see Bush visiting Beirut anytime soon :lolBIG:

However, the real force behind radical change, as usual, is the general population.

During the Parliament session in which the leadership and its cabinet resigned today, there were tens of thousands of protesters just outside.

Tens of thousands.

there should be plenty of good replacements in lebanon. Lebanon is not like syria or iraq or even the palestinians. They are moderate society which was only run by extremists. There is a large christian population in lebanon as well. So the society isnt your typical extreme muslim society.

I swear...this is so good, it has to be fattening.

Speaking of fat, where's Michael Moore with his his video camera? Where are Susan Sarandon, Tim Robbins, and Sean Penn? I thought they were all about the peace, all about throwing off the oppression, all about letting people find their freedom apart from U.S. intervention...?

People are dancing in the streets in Beirut as government soldiers allow young people to form a populist movement for ridding Lebanon of 30 years of domination by Syria...and nary a word of encouragement or support yet from the Hollywood crowd (who admittedly may be suffering from post-Oscar hangovers). The silence is pretty f*cking deafening, no?

Surely its only a matter of days before Moore interviews these young people in the proverbial "Arab Street" and asks them how they feel about the possibility of participating in a peaceful overthrow of increasingly unwelcome Syrian influence. Right?

Should such a thing pan out (call me crazy, but it very well may not...and there's your biscuit, doubters), one can only hope for a peaceful process. I can hardly wait for the forthcoming celebration from the sociopolitical caring left.

We haven't attacked Syria (yet). I think the more correct analogy would be to say "uncle" just because Warren Sapp may bend your finger backwards.

Or something like that. The US doesn't have much to do with Lebanon other than scaring Syria shitless.
