WTA Stuttgart

Don’t typically fancy wagering on the women on clay —- as brilliant as the pace is in the men’s game on the dirt, for the women, it can really hamper the power game many of the women employ. And if I’m being honest grass makes the women's game so much fun because it amps the aces/winner —- clay does the opposite. It can often reward the athletes and the gamers, which is fun if those points are won by winners. Less so when it’s ended in errors.

WITH THAT SAID —— the indoor clay surface at Stuttgart is quick and fast, and in the past, I’ve managed to wrangle a few winners here. So I’ll be dipping my toes in and seeing if the water is hot —— fade and tail as you wish.

Chloe Paquet (+178) vs Liudmilla Samsonova (-245)

12:30PM

Paquet did very well to advance out of qualifies here in Istanbul, but against Samsonova, I feel as if she may be a little bit overmatched.

Samsonova is clearly the more highly rated player with regards to Elo; Samsonova’s overall Elo is 308.7 points higher than Paquet’s and her clay-court Elo is 185.6 points higher than the Frenchwoman’s. The Russian uses her heavy serve and the blistering pace she creates on her groundstrokes to score quick points and create easy service games. This game plan hasn’t always meant success on clay (see last time out in Miami), but should play up in Istanbul, and against an opponent who lacks the weapons to make Samsonova uncomfortable, I struggle to see how she drops a set in this matchup.

ATP Belgrade

Richard Gasquet (+255) vs Miomir Kecmanovic (-379)

9:00AM

I fancy Kecmanovic (ranked 38) going a long way here at this event, but of course, firstly the 22yo Serbian needs to get past tour veteran Gasquet (ranked 84). The 35yo Frenchman is 8-7 this year (2-1 on clay) but is 1-4 since Jan 2020 vs top 50 players. Kecmanovic is 7-3 on clay this season, he made the Quarter Finals in Rio (via Qualifiers) and in Santiago. He's likely trained and played here at the Djokovic tennis center in Belgrade more times than I've had hot dinners and I think he wins this match. As do the bookies, unfortunately, so we’ll be paying a little juice here on the winner by the straight sets, but I’m betting this one’s worth the squeeze.

PLAY —- Miomir Kecmanovic in Straight Sets (-117)
