I have a commemorative ball to this day...
Palmer, Cuellar, McNally, Dobson....
My favorite team 1979 Baltimore Orioles, this was the place to be as a kid, guys I`m telling you this was a basball fans dream season....baseball took off bigtime in `79 in Baltimore, this team found ways to win that were unreal, always coming from behind winning dramatically....I think Judge W would have to agree these were special times in Baltimore! As a kid the Orioles were in the thick of it year in and year out, they were the model franchise from the mid 60`s to early 80`s....But 1979 was the most special year...The season started very slowly, I remember it so well , the first game was @ home vs Chicago it was a cold blustery day about 30 degrees , we won that game but went on to start 3-8 , I remember because I use to log each game score, I can still see that notebook in my mind,lol...Early that season game 3 still against Chicago, Gary Roenicke got hit right in the face I had box seats that sunday afternoon and you could hear his jaw break, it was nasty! He came back later in the year and had a great year, he wore a half a face mask to protect his face, just one of the things that stands out,lol...The Orioles ended up running away with the mighty AL EAST clinching early....The handled the Angels in a best of 5, 3-1 in game one of that series John Lowenstein hit one of the LEFT FIELD foul pole to end the game....Game two of the playoffs the orioles broke out to a large lead then held on, I think the final was 9-8 something like that....They went out to California to clinch in game 4, I believe it was a Scott McGregor shutout....
The 1979 World Series (this is where the dream died) the Orioles up 3-1 vs Pittsburgh, the "We are Family" Pirates of 79 led by Pops Willie Stargell...came all the way back to beat us...I was at game 6-7 and still have that 1979 Series ball sits right on my TV all these years later... Somehow the Pirates came back and beat McGregor, Palmer and Flanagan 3 aces back then.....Game 7 the go ahead runs were on base for the Orioles it was like the bottom of the 8th maybe 7th...None other than my hero Eddie Murray at the plate, Kent Tekulve pitching Murray crushed it to right field, just 'topping' a bit and the frozen rope fell harlessly into Dave Parker`s glove...
I was depressed for days after that, but looking back that was my championship season.... Baltimore went on to win in 83 as we all now, but that team was great from 79-83...Those were magical years!
