Ok, historic and dramatic and I want a phucking shirt for just remembering, but I have kept the ticket stub for 44 years because of what my dad told me that night.
I'm a kid and on March 12, 1959, my dad who had 25 pro heavyweight fights takes me to the National Golden Gloves finals at the Chicago Stadium. It's the three ring simultaneous fight thing.
So anyway there is the fight for the light heavyweight Golden Gloves Tournament of Champions crown in the center ring. My dad is in awe of a seventeen year old kid in the center ring.
Dad says" this kid you will see a lot of on the Friday night fights. This kid is gonna be a champion mark my words."
Good lookin kid and I remember to this day how brash and cocky the kid looked as he easily won the crown.
I remember I thought his name was cool: Cassius Clay from Central High in Louisville. That's how they announced him.
