"Swedish Virus Deaths Top 1,000, Fueling Criticism Over Strategy

Sweden just passed a grim milestone, as Scandinavia’s biggest economy reported more than 1,000 deaths from Covid-19.

The development adds to controversy surrounding Sweden’s decision to ignore the lockdowns being imposed elsewhere, and instead leave schools, bars, cafes and restaurants open to the public. Prime Minister Stefan Lofven has said that stricter measures may be needed going forward.

In all, 1,033 Swedes have died from Covid-19, official figures showed on Tuesday. Though still well below fatality rates in Italy and the U.K., it’s far worse than in any of the Nordic countries with which Sweden usually compares itself. The Swedish mortality rate is almost 10 times higher than in Finland, more than four times higher than in Norway, and twice Denmark’s.

The latest development has prompted 22 academics to entreat the government to alter its course. “The approach must be changed radically and swiftly,” they wrote in an opinion piece published in the Dagens Nyheter newspaper.

</figure>Lofven’s hands-off model has drawn criticism from across the globe, including from U.S. President Donald Trump. But in Sweden, government agencies and policy makers say their approach is built on the idea that voluntary social distancing measures are most effective, rather than a total lockdown. They argue the Swedish model is more sustainable when it comes to fighting a lasting pandemic.
Like elsewhere, most of Sweden’s Covid-19 deaths have hit the elderly--a demographic Lofven has admitted they should have done more to protect.
“We have had an unfortunate development, especially compared to our neighboring countries, with an introduction of the virus at many elderly care homes,” Sweden’s top epidemiologist Anders Tegnell said at a press conference on Tuesday. “We have started working hard on this, in coordination with other government agencies.”
The academics writing in Dagens Nyheter urged the government to adopt a number of specific measures to save lives.
“Close schools and restaurants in the same way that Finland has. All people working with elderly must wear adequate protective equipment. Start mass testing of all personnel that treat patients and test for antibodies so that those who have immunity can go back to work.”

Perhaps so. Apparently Northern Europeans have a higher immunity to stuff like HIV than many places on planet earth. So it could be that their policy, if foolish, may not hurt them too too badly in the end.

we do not have to go to mars to tell us what to do. We only have to look to sweden. those over 70 have been advised to stay indoors with their needs cared for with deliveries of food and medicines. Anyone with a cough and/or fever is advised to stay at home and alert the authorities and medics will go and run a coronavirus test and determine next course of action.

the rates of infection and deaths in sweden have been higher than in canada. Yet, sweden kept kindergartens, primary and secondary schools open. The sky hasn't caved in. Mass gatherings of over 500 are banned but restaurants, bars, cinemas, garden centers, corner shops are all open with patrons spaced reasonably apart. over two consecutive 24-hour periods, the number of deaths in sweden has declined from 17 to 12. Seems the curve has flattened precipitously in that country without a lockdown.

sweden refused to be cowed into submission by the coronavirus. Rather, sweden has given the finger to the coronavirus. Sweden says life must go on with some precautions. the only thing the rest of us seem to fear is fear itself - said by fdr."

the only reason i compare sweden vs canada is because people like yourself keep referencing that we (as canadians) should look at what sweden is using as a model to combat the coronavirus, which clearly is not a method that is working.
the words you used are "we do not have to go to mars to tell us what to do. We only have to look to sweden"

further the daily death numbers you referenced to that dropped from 77, to 17, and 12 on april 12th have been on the rise just like i told you they would be to 20, to 114, to 170, 160 yesterday and so far 67 more today. As well i posted that the daily number of confirmed cases would also be on the rise and so far they have gone from 544, 466, 332 on april 12th to 465, 497, 482, 613 and 676 so far today

this is why i keep telling you referring to one or even a couple of days in drop in the daily deaths or the confirmed cases is not proof that any curve is flattened. It's truly amazing that we've been told billions of times since january that one of the contributing factor to spreading the coronavirus is asymptomatic carriers can carry the virus for weeks without showing any signs and some people still haven't understood this simple fact.

As for comparing sweden to italy, spain, france, belgium, netherland, or switzerland i don't know on what basis do you claim they are doing better? Is it based on total confirmed cases, numbers of death, death rate or contraction rate of the virus?
Why are you not comparing sweden with it's immediate neighbours that are only 100's of km's away or right on their border like germany, denmark, norway, finland, poland, and you compare it to countries that are 1000's of km's away?

Swedes may have much more natural immunity to the novel virus than other countries. Northern Europeans have greater immunity to a number of diseases, such as HIV, etc. So comparing infections, deaths, death rates, etc, between countries may be pointless?

" An estimated 1 percent of people descended from Northern Europeans are virtually immune to AIDS infection, with Swedes the most likely to be protected."

"Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Löfven has admitted that the lax approach meant that “we will have significantly more deaths,” and the country may shift toward stricter measures."

"As I've said numerous times Sweden is at a point that their healthcare system is close to being overburdened with cases.
Thankfully their Prime Minister is aware of that and knows at some point he might have no other option but to institute strict measures to combat the virus which is exactly what I have been saying.

"“We don’t have a radically different view,” Foreign Minister Ann Linde said in an interview with Radio Sweden. “The government has made a series of decisions that affect the whole society. It’s a myth that life goes on as normal in Sweden.”

Politics? Don't vote. Don't care.

Romans 13:1 “Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God.”

Have a nice day & stay safe.

Bible says don’t be an ignorant fool also but yet here you are
