BILLS (-9) over Steelers

Before we get into the selections, a few words about the mish-mosh otherwise known as Week 17. From a handicapping standpoint, this week is harder to figure than the exhibition games. Who will play? How long will they play? How intense? So many questions, so few answers. With that in mind, we suggest that you tread lightly on the card. No one really knows Pittsburgh's mind-set, but we do know Buffalo's. The Bills are on an enormous roll, winning and covering six in a row, while outscoring the opposition, 228-89. That's an average winning margin of 23 points. All that, plus the Buffs actually do have something to play for, a wild card, while the Steelmen will look to get out of town as quick as possible.

RAVENS (-11) over Dolphins

Chances of Baltimore rolling into the playoffs for the fourth time in 5 years are slim, very slim. Winning is not the problem for the Ravens. That's guaranteed. It's counting on losses from Buffalo, Denver and Jacksonville. That will be the problem, not Miami. The Dolphins have been playing very hard for interim head coach Jim Bates, and actually lobbied for him to return as head coach, but as everyone knows, owner Wayne Huzienga decided to give LSU's Nick Saban double-digit millions. So why would the Fish keep swimming hard, now that their guy is cast out to sea? The answer is, they won't. Especially with A.J. Feeley hurt and third-string QB Sage Rosenfels making his first career start.

Vikings (-4) over REDSKINS

Everyone on this Minnesota team remembers what happened at the end of last season. The Vikes were way too nonchalant and wound up losing to the sad-sack Arizona Cardinals, and it cost them a playoff spot. Mike Tice will make sure his Purple People remember, and since Washington will be without Clinton Portis, its only offensive threat, we're chalking up an easy win for the invaders from Minny.

PANTHERS (-7) over Saints

What a ride Carolina has provided. The Panthers have covered seven in a row and are averaging 30 points per game during that stretch. And why this all fits so perfectly is, New Orleans has the worst defense in the NFL, allowing 388.1 yards per game. Carolina beat the Saints in New Orleans on Dec. 5, 32-21, and the Panthers should be able to scratch out another W.

Jets (-3) over RAMS

It's a well-established fact that New York has trouble with the elite teams (like the Patriots and Steelers), but when it comes to the mediocre underbelly of the NFL (like the Texans, Cardinals and Dolphins), the Jets soar, to the tune of 7-0. And since St. Louis has covered only one of the last six and two of the last nine, the smart money is on the New Yorkers.

TEXANS (-10) over Browns

Talk about finishing with a flourish. Houston has won three of the last five, and in the last two, outscored Chicago and Jacksonville, 45-5 combined, both on the road.

BRONCOS (- over Colts

This is fairly simple. Win and you're in. With Indy coming to town and acting more like laid-back geldings than young, frisky Colts, Denver should be able to slide into the playoffs with room to spare.

We also like:

PATRIOTS (-13) over 49ers

+3.0 / 10 units Note: Rams are 4-0 SU & ATS in their last four games as home dogs, including 2-0 SU & ATS under head coach Mike Martz. In addition, .600 < non division teams in their final home game of the season playing off a win, who scored < 48 points in the game prior to the victory, are 12-0 SU & ATS when playing a .666
> opponent. With the Jets averaging < 12.5 PPG in their last five road games, and the Rams allowing 8.3 PPG in their last three home games, look for a huge effort from St. Louis here today.
