Week 4 Here We Go!!!

7 Units Washington Redskins -3 +105

It seems that the Joe Gibbs' return just might not be such a big deal this year. A 1-2 SU/ATS start is downright pedestrian after Monday's 21-18 loss to the Cowboys. QB Mark Brunell threw for 325 yards on 25-of-43 passing with two touchdowns for the Redskins, who have lost two straight after winning their season opener over Tampa Bay. Rod Gardner had nine receptions, including two for touchdowns, for 121 yards. RB Clinton Portis rushed 23 times for 94 yards in the loss. Neither team has managed much offense in the opening half, but the Cowboys benefitted from a key penalty to take a four-point lead after two quarters. The Skins didn't manage their time outs very well in the second half. The Redskins have the No. 1 rush defense in the NFL, allowing 47.3 yards per game! The Browns are 18th in the NFL at stopping the run, so Portis should be able to keep the Washington offense balanced. The injury riddled Browns (1-2 SU/ATS) come off an anemic offensive display in losing to the Giants 27-10. QB Jeff Garcia finished 21-of-31 passing for 180 yards, including a three-yard touchdown pass to Quincy Morgan. Garcia also threw one interception and was sacked four times. Cleveland managed just 89 yards in the first half. Cleveland was without running back Lee Suggs (neck stringer), though Suggs will play this week. They also have injuries to cornerbacks Anthony Henry and Daylon McCutcheon. The Redskins are averaging 16 ppg and have three UNDERS while the Browns are averaging 14 ppg and have three UNDERS. Cleveland's defense is allowing 251 yards passing per game (26th in the NFL), so the Redskins will be able to move the ball on the ground and through the air. Overall, don't look for too much scoring, and likely more scoring by the visitors.

7 Units New Orleans Saints -3 -110

Aaron Brooks completed 24-of-41 passes for 316 yards and a score for the Saints (2-1 SU, 1-2 ATS) Sunday in an overtime, 28-25 win over the St. Louis Rams. The Saints are winners of two straight after a season-opening loss to Seattle. The Rams looked to be in good shape after Marc Bulger's 19-yard touchdown run with only 28 seconds to play in the fourth quarter, but the Saints quickly moved into field goal range after a squib kick gave them the ball at their own 42. Aaron Stecker rushed for 106 yards and a score on 18 carries in place of Deuce McAllister. Injuries are mounting on offense for New Orleans: Already without RB Deuce McAllister, the Saints may also be short a few wide receivers. Joe Horn (knee), Jerome Pathon (hamstring) and Talman Gardner (ankle) are all listed as questionable for Sunday's game. Head coach Jim Haslett said the team will probably go with four receivers this weekend and he doubts that LSU rookie Devery Henderson will be activated. The Cardinals, who turned the ball over three times in the red zone, lost their third straight, a 6-3 loss to the Falcons on Sunday. Josh McCown was 20-of-26 for 198 yards, but lost three fumbles and was pulled late in the game for Shaun King. King completed 5-of-6 passes for 40 yards in relief. The game consisted of only 523 yards of total offense and eight turnovers. The Cardinals (0-3 SU, 2-1 ATS) return to the desert this week where they have a 7-10 SU, 9-8 ATS log going. The Cards offense is no where to be found three weeks into the season, Saints' Brooks is on fire and looking for a field day on game day this Sunday.

5 Units New York Jets -6.5 -105

The Miami Dolphins (0-3 SU/1-2 ATS) are so bad it's hard to believe they're a home dog, but get used to seeing that. Miami's offense is averaging 7.7 points, 47 yards rushing and 172 passing! Granted, the weather was lousy last week, but this is a team with no running game or speed at the skill positions...and no QB. Not a recipe for offensive success. A housecleaning is in order at the end of the season, if not sooner. For this game, QB Jay Fiedler will replace A.J. Feeley at quarterback. Feeley has thrown two touchdown passes and five interceptions since supplanting Fiedler at halftime of the Dolphins' opener. Miami's offense is ranked 31st in the league and last in the NFL in scoring with 23 total points! QB is not the only problem. Defensive tackle Tim Bowens, who has yet to play this season, will miss Sunday's game with a herniated disc in his back. WR Chris Chambers didn't practice Wednesday and was listed as questionable, and middle LB Zach Thomas is also questionable with a shoulder bruise. The Jets (2-0 SU/ATS) are rolling, averaging 33 points with perfect balance: 170 yards rushing, 238 passing per game. They've also had two weeks to prepare. New York's defense is still a work in progress, but that won't matter here. The Jets have far too much 'O' behind QB Chad Pennington, RB Curtis Martin and WR Santana Moss. The boo birds will be all over Dave Wannstedt, early and often -- again!

5 Units Buffalo Bills OVER 36 -109

The streak is on the line. The Patriots have won 17 in a row, counting playoffs. New England hasn’t lost in over a year: Last loss was September 28, 2003 at the Redskins (20-17). The NFL record for consecutive victories is 18. Both teams are rested off bye weeks. New England (2-0 SU, 1-1 ATS) outscores teams by a 25-18 average, averaging 390 yds per game (263 yds passing, 127 rushing pg). They have a versatile offense behind QB Tom Brady, with tons of wide receiver depth and new RB Corey Dillon (244 yds, 5.2 ypc). They will have to be on their game against a Buffalo defense that is allowing just 13 ppg and was No. 2 in the NFL last season. The Patriots are 20-2 SU, 16-5-1 ATS their last 22 games and 7-2 SU, 6-2-1 ATS on the road their last 9 road games. The Patriots are also 3-1 ATS the last 4 meetings with Buffalo. The problem for the Buffalo Bills (0-2 SU, 1-1 ATS) is offense, with consecutive 13-10 defeats to the Jags and Raiders to open the season under new coach Mike Mularkey. The Bills are averaging 10 points and 242 total yards pg (81 yds rushing, 161 passing pg). Buffalo is an incredible 25-3 UNDER the total the last 28 games, 2-0 under this season. In fact, in the last 10 meetings between the Patriots and Bills, the UNDER is 10-0. No other way to look at this game except a close, defensive duel.

5 Units Pittsburgh Steelers OVER 39.5 -105

This is going to be a down year for the Bengals (1-2 SU, 0-3 ATS). Cincy overachieved last year, but several things are against that happening in 2004. First, Cincy's defense was very poor a year ago, 28th in the NFL, allowing 4.8 yards per rush. The hot offense behind QB Jon Kitna was able to conceal that somewhat. Secondly, Kitna is on the bench and they are throwing untested QB Carson Palmer out there. This is a good move in the long term for the Bengals, but bad in the short term. Palmer passed for 316 yards last week, but was picked off three times with no TDs. That was against Baltimore's tough defense, so things will be a bit easier this week against the Steelers. But Pittsburgh (2-1 SU, 1-2 ATS) is home after a two-game road trip, losing at Baltimore but topping punchless Miami in the hurricane, 13-3. QB Ben Roethlisberger is the new quarterback, and he's completing 57% of his passes with 3 TDs, 3 picks. Fortunately, the Steelers offense is well balanced behind RB Duce Staley (4 ypc) and their great WRs of Plaxico Burress, Hines Ward (22 catches) and Antwaan Randle-El. Despite the kid QBs running the show, there could be more points than expected here. The last two games in Pittsburgh between these teams have gone OVER the total.
