Preview: Giants at Nationals

GAME: San Francisco Giants (63-47) at Washington Nationals (65-45)
DATE/TIME: Sunday, August 07 - 1:35 PM EST
WHERE: Nationals Park, Washington, District of Columbia
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The San Francisco Giants have yet to win a series since the All-Star break, but they will send ace Madison Bumgarner to the mound Sunday with the hopes of ending that drought in the rubber match of a three-game set at the Washington Nationals. The Giants rolled to a 7-1 victory Saturday to level the series with only their sixth win in 20 games.

Eduardo Nunez had an inauspicious start since his acquisition from Minnesota, going 2-for-20 in his first seven games before snapping out of the funk with four hits Saturday, including a pair of triples. Brandon Belt went 3-for-5 with a homer for the second time in the last four contests as San Francisco notched just its third win in its last 13 road games. While the Giants own a two-game lead atop the National League West, Washington holds a comfortable seven-game cushion in the NL East despite having its four-game winning streak snapped. Nationals right fielder Bryce Harper's struggles continued as he struck out in all three plate appearances before exiting with a stiff neck.

TV: 1:35 p.m. ET, TBS, CSN Bay Area (San Francisco), MASN (Washington)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Giants LH Madison Bumgarner (10-6, 2.25 ERA) vs. Nationals RH Tanner Roark (11-6, 3.02)

Bumgarner allowed season highs in hits (10) and runs (eight) while lasting only five innings in a loss at Philadelphia last time out that stretched his winless drought to four starts. Bumgarner, who failed to go six innings for the first time since April 15, has surrendered five homers during the skid. Ben Revere is 7-for-14 against Bumgarner, who struck out 14 in a three-hit shutout against Washington last August.

Roark won his second straight outing with another quality start at Arizona on Tuesday, giving up three runs on seven hits over 6 1/3 innings. The 29-year-old Roark is 5-1 over his last seven turns and continues to pitch deep into ball games, going at least seven innings in six of his last eight starts. Giants catcher Buster Posey is 4-for-9 against Roark, who owns a 5-4 record and 2.79 ERA in 11 home starts.

WALK-OFFS

1. Harper has five hits in his last 41 at-bats.

2. Nunez became the first San Francisco player with two triples and a double in a game since Will Clark in 1991.

3. Nationals 1B Ryan Zimmerman was placed on the 15-day disabled list Saturday with a left wrist contusion.

Preview: Orioles at White Sox

GAME: Baltimore Orioles (62-47) at Chicago White Sox (53-57)
DATE/TIME: Sunday, August 07 - 2:10 PM EST
WHERE: U.S. Cellular Field, Chicago, Illinois
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Baltimore Orioles are clinging to a percentage-point lead atop the American League East despite losing seven of their last 11 contests. The Orioles look to shake their recent woes and secure their first road series victory in three weeks on Sunday when they play rubber match of the three-game set versus the host Chicago White Sox.

While red-hot Pedro Alvarez (six homers in five games) received the night off on Saturday, J.J. Hardy continued his strong surge by driving in a pair of runs in a 4-2 setback to the White Sox. The 33-year-old Hardy is 4-for-7 with three RBIs in the series and is batting .278 in his career versus Sunday starter James Shields. While Baltimore is doing its best to thwart torrid Toronto from taking over the AL East, Chicago recorded just its third win in 10 outings as it tries to pick up the pieces after the bottom fell out following a strong start. Adam Eaton and Tyler Saladino each belted a solo homer on Saturday, with the former collecting seven hits in his last six games while the latter is 4-for-10 in his last three.

TV: 2:10 p.m. ET, MASN2 (Baltimore), CSN Chicago

PITCHING MATCHUP: Orioles RH Dylan Bundy (4-3, 3.05 ERA) vs. White Sox RH James Shields (5-13, 4.92)

Bundy allowed just one hit and two baserunners over a career-high seven shutout innings to lead Baltimore to a 5-1 victory over Texas on Tuesday. The 23-year-old owns a 2-1 mark with a 1.53 ERA and 15 strikeouts in his last three starts (17 2/3 innings). Bundy has fared well in one relief appearance against Chicago, permitting three hits over two scoreless innings in a no-decision.

Shields' run of six straight quality starts ended with a thud on Tuesday, as the 34-year-old yielded six runs on nine hits in five innings of an 11-5 setback at Detroit. While Shields' season record leaves plenty to be desired, he boasts a 3-4 record with a 2.68 ERA in his last seven outings. Shields owns an 11-7 career mark versus Baltimore primarily due to his first seven seasons with Tampa Bay, although he was blitzed for four runs on 10 hits in five innings in his last meeting with the Orioles.

WALK-OFFS

1. Baltimore 1B Chris Davis, who is 0-for-7 with four strikeouts in the series, is batting .128 with one homer and four RBIs in his last 26 contests.

2. Chicago LF Melky Cabrera had two hits Saturday to double his total from his previous four games.

3. Orioles 1B Steve Pearce is 0-for-6 with three strikeouts since being acquired from Tampa Bay at the trade deadline.

Preview: Rangers at Astros

GAME: Texas Rangers (64-47) at Houston Astros (57-53)
DATE/TIME: Sunday, August 07 - 2:10 PM EST
WHERE: Minute Maid Park, Houston, Texas
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Texas Rangers made a series of moves at the trade deadline, in part to give themselves a better chance of holding off the Houston Astros in the American League West, and so far, those moves are paying off. The Rangers will try to ride the hot bats of Carlos Beltran and Jonathan Lucroy to a series win when they visit the Astros for the rubber match of their three-game set.

The Astros held a 1-0 lead on Saturday before Lucroy tied it with a solo home run, Beltran put Texas ahead with an RBI single and Lucroy added an insurance run with another solo blast in the eighth inning of a 3-2 win. The victory increased the Rangers’ lead over Houston in the AL West to 6 1/2 games and pushed them back to 30-30 on the road with three contests left on their trip. The Astros have lost nine of their last 12 games to turn a tight race atop the division into a comfortable lead for Texas. The one good thing to come from Saturday’s setback for Houston was rookie Alex Bregman going 3-for-5 with an RBI - one more hit than he managed in 38 at-bats over his first 10 major-league games.

TV: 2:10 p.m. ET, FSN Southwest (Texas), ROOT (Houston)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rangers RH Yu Darvish (2-3, 3.29 ERA) vs. Astros RH Joe Musgrove (0-0, 0.00)

Darvish is racking up big strikeout numbers but is having a difficult time finding his way into the win column. The native of Japan has allowed three or fewer runs in each of his four starts since coming off the disabled list on July 16 and notched 35 strikeouts in 22 2/3 innings but is 0-3 over that span. Darvish faced Houston on June 8 before hitting the DL and was in a similar spot, striking out seven while allowing one run in five frames without factoring in the decision.

Musgrove made his major-league debut in relief of Lance McCullers on Tuesday and struck out eight while allowing one hit and walking one in 4 1/3 scoreless innings. The 23-year-old will take over the rotation spot vacated by McCullers (elbow) after breezing through two levels of the minors in 2016. Musgrove went 7-4 with a 2.74 ERA and 87 strikeouts in 85 1/3 combined frames with Double-A Corpus Christi and Triple-A Fresno.

WALK-OFFS

1. Beltran exited Saturday’s game with a quad contusion and is day-to-day.

2. Houston RF George Springer is 2-for-20 with six strikeouts in his last five contests.

3. Rangers RF Shin-Soo Choo (back) is 5-for-12 in three games since coming off the DL.

GAME: Toronto Blue Jays (63-48) at Kansas City Royals (52-58)
DATE/TIME: Sunday, August 07 - 2:15 PM EST
WHERE: Kauffman Stadium, Kansas City, Missouri
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

Devon Travis has embraced the month of August with both arms and, in the process, has put the squeeze on the Kansas City Royals. The 25-year-old looks to continue his torrid display at the plate on Sunday afternoon as the visiting Toronto Blue Jays attempt to win the rubber match of the three-game series versus Kansas City.

Travis belted a pair of solo homers in Friday's 4-3 win before going deep once again among his two hits in Saturday's 4-2 setback. The promising star is a blistering 10-for-27 with five RBIs and four runs scored this month and 10-for-30 with three homers with six RBIs and as many runs scored in eight encounters with the Royals. While Toronto fell for just the fourth time in 13 games and remained a percentage point behind American League East-leading Baltimore, Kansas City emerged victorious for just the fourth time in 15 games overall and third occasion in 10 outings at Kauffman Stadium. Eric Hosmer had a two-run single to highlight his third multi-hit performance in five games and is batting .333 (52-for-156) in 38 career contests versus Toronto.

TV: 2:15 p.m. ET, Sportsnet (Toronto), FSN Kansas City

PITCHING MATCHUP: Blue Jays RH Marcus Stroman (8-4, 4.74 ERA) vs. Royals RH Yordano Ventura (6-9, 4.83)

Stroman recorded his first double-digit strikeout performance by fanning a career-best 13 on Monday, but the 25-year-old settled for a no-decision at Houston despite allowing one run on three hits in seven innings. Stroman has righted the ship after a tough stretch, going 2-0 with a 3.29 ERA in his last six outings. Included in that mix was a sterling effort versus Kansas City on July 6, as Stroman improved to 2-0 in as many starts against the Royals by permitting just two runs on three hits in eight frames of a 4-2 victory.

Mired in an 0-5 stretch in his last seven outings, Ventura overcame allowing four walks for the second time in three starts to escape with a no-decision at Tampa Bay on Tuesday. The 25-year-old Dominican limited the damage to two runs on six hits in five innings and kept the ball in the park after being taken deep on three occasions versus Texas on July 28. Ventura, who is in search of his first win since June 17, won his lone career decision in two starts against Toronto despite yielding four runs in 6 2/3 innings.

WALK-OFFS

1. Kansas City CF Paulo Orlando is 11-for-22 with a solo homer and three runs scored in August.

2. Toronto OF Jose Bautista is 5-for-32 in his last eight games.

3. Royals OF Kendrys Morales is 2-for-18 with six strikeouts in his last five contests.

Preview: Braves at Cardinals

GAME: Atlanta Braves (40-70) at St. Louis Cardinals (58-52)
DATE/TIME: Sunday, August 07 - 2:15 PM EST
WHERE: Busch Stadium, St. Louis, Missouri
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Atlanta Braves own the worst record in baseball, but you wouldn’t notice with the way they’ve been playing of late. The Braves will try to secure their fourth straight non-losing series when they visit the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday for the rubber match of their three-game set.

Atlanta and St. Louis are at opposite ends of the competition cycle, but it’s the Braves who appear to be fighting for a wild-card spot with their recent surge while the Cardinals have dropped five of their last seven games. St. Louis’ swoon began against the team it is battling for the second National League wild card – Miami – but has continued against a pair of clubs going nowhere in Cincinnati Reds and Atlanta. Cardinals pitchers have allowed an average of 8.6 runs in the last five losses, including a 13-5 setback on Saturday that got out of hand when the Braves pushed across six runs in the ninth inning. Matt Kemp hit his first homer for Atlanta in the ninth and improved to 2-for-18 in five games since joining the team at the trade deadline.

TV: 2:15 p.m. ET, FSN South (Atlanta), FSN Midwest (St. Louis)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Braves RH Mike Foltynewicz (4-5, 4.60 ERA) vs. Cardinals RH Adam Wainwright (9-5, 4.14)

Foltynewicz struggled in his last two starts, allowing a total of 12 runs – 11 earned – on 16 hits and three walks in 10 2/3 innings against Minnesota and Pittsburgh. The offense bailed out the 24-year-old on July 27 but could not turn that trick again on Tuesday as he suffered the loss. Foltynewicz, who is making his first career appearance against St. Louis, is 3-4 with a 5.40 ERA in seven road starts this season.

Wainwright has not lost since June 27 but is winless in his last three starts and could not make it into the sixth inning at Cincinnati on Tuesday. The Georgia native needed 101 pitches to make it through five frames and was charged with two runs and five hits in the no-decision. Wainwright had a rough outing at Atlanta on April 10, surrendering five runs on six hits and five walks in five innings, but escaped with a no-decision.

WALK-OFFS

1. The Braves traded LHP Hunter Cervenka to the Marlins on Saturday for a pair of minor leaguers.

2. St. Louis C Yadier Molina (right hand contusion) left Saturday’s game and is day-to-day.

3. Atlanta, which ranks last in the majors with 68 home runs, hit four in Saturday’s triumph.

GAME: Chicago Cubs (68-41) at Oakland Athletics (48-62)
DATE/TIME: Sunday, August 07 - 4:05 PM EST
WHERE: Oakland Coliseum, Oakland, California
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Chicago Cubs will try to finish off their second consecutive series sweep and run their winning streak to seven games when they face the host Oakland Athletics in the finale of a three-game series Sunday. The Cubs have outscored the Athletics 11-2 in the first two games of the series, including a 4-0 victory Saturday.

The Cubs (68-41) have won nine of their last 10 to pad the best record in the majors and boost their National League Central lead to 10 1/2 games over St. Louis. Chicago’s pitching continues to impress, as opponents have scored two or fewer runs in seven of the past 10 contests, including a pair of shutouts. Right-hander Kyle Hendricks looks to continue his breakout campaign and keep the struggling Athletics on their heels. American League West-worst Oakland has managed only 10 hits in the series has dropped seven of its last eight games.

TV: 4:05 p.m. ET, WGN (Chicago), CSN California (Oakland)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Cubs RH Kyle Hendricks (10-7, 2.22 ERA) vs. Athletics LH Sean Manaea (3-6, 4.68)

Hendricks has allowed no earned runs in five of his last six starts and posted a 1.00 ERA in four starts since the All-Star break. The 26-year-old tossed a seven-hit shutout Monday against Miami, striking out five and walking three in a dominant effort. Hendricks, who is facing Oakland for the first time, has dominated at home but is a pedestrian 2-6 with a 3.75 ERA in nine starts on the road.

Manaea is winless in six games (five starts) since June 29 despite a respectable 3.62 ERA over that span. The 24-year-old has suffered no-decisions in which he pitched seven and eight scoreless innings, but he was tagged for five runs (four earned) in 5 2/3 innings in a loss to the Los Angeles Angels on Tuesday. Manaea has fared well at home, where he is 3-2 with a 3.39 ERA in 10 games (nine starts).

WALK-OFFS

1. Cubs CF Dexter Fowler is 9-for-23 with eight runs scored during a six-game hitting streak.

2. Oakland has committed six errors in the past five games after making one over the previous 10 contests.

3. Chicago has drawn 81 walks in 21 games since the All-Star break and leads the majors with 456 free passes this season.

GAME: Milwaukee Brewers (49-59) at Arizona Diamondbacks (44-66)
DATE/TIME: Sunday, August 07 - 4:10 PM EST
WHERE: Chase Field, Phoenix, Arizona
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Arizona Diamondbacks seek their first series win since mid-July when they host the Milwaukee Brewers on Sunday for the finale of their three-game set. The Diamondbacks have lost five straight series since taking two of three from the Los Angeles Dodgers at home right after the All-Star break and failed in their first attempt at winning this set as they were pounded 15-6 on Saturday after capturing the opener.

Welington Castillo belted a two-run homer a day after driving in the winning run with a bases-loaded walk, giving him 10 RBIs in his last 11 games. Milwaukee used a 19-hit attack on Saturday to improve to 2-3 on its six-game road trip. Ryan Braun tied the franchise record with seven RBIs as he belted a pair of three-run homers while adding a sacrifice fly, giving him four blasts and 10 RBIs in his last four contests. Jonathan Villar has been on fire of late, going 10-for-17 over his last four games.

TV: 4:10 p.m. ET, FSN Wisconsin (Milwaukee), FSN Arizona

PITCHING MATCHUP: Brewers RH Jimmy Nelson (6-10, 3.74 ERA) vs. Diamondbacks RH Archie Bradley (4-7, 4.75)

Nelson lost his third consecutive start Monday, falling at San Diego after surrendering six runs on eight hits and four walks in four innings. The 27-year-old Oregon native has failed to work more than five frames during his slide and yielded a total of 18 runs in 13 2/3 innings, although eight were unearned. Six of those unearned runs came against Arizona on July 27, when he gave up eight overall in 4 2/3 frames to fall to 1-1 with a 3.06 ERA in three career starts versus the Diamondbacks.

Bradley has also had trouble recording wins of late, dropping four of his last five decisions - including a setback against Washington on Monday in which he was tagged for eight runs - seven earned - and 12 hits in a season-low 3 1/3 innings. The 23-year-old from Oklahoma pitched well over his previous eight turns, however, allowing three runs or fewer on seven occasions - and one run in four of those outings. Bradley was impressive in his first matchup against Nelson - and first career start versus Milwaukee, giving up just one run and four hits over seven frames in their meeting last month.

WALK-OFFS

1. Brewers CF Keon Broxton is 6-for-6 with a homer and three RBIs over the first two games of the series.

2. Arizona OF A.J. Pollock, who has missed the entire season with a fractured right elbow, will join Class-A Visalia on Monday to continue his rehab assignment as he hopes to make an appearance with the Diamondbacks in 2016.

3. Milwaukee released RHP Ariel Pena, who appeared in one game in April and was the last remaining piece from the trade that sent Zack Greinke to the Los Angeles Angels in 2012, from the organization.

GAME: Los Angeles Angels (49-61) at Seattle Mariners (56-53)
DATE/TIME: Sunday, August 07 - 4:10 PM EST
WHERE: Safeco Field, Seattle, Washington
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The bottom of the batting order has stepped up in a big way for the Seattle Mariners this weekend, with Mike Zunino and Shawn O'Malley playing starring roles instead of Robinson Cano or Nelson Cruz. The Mariners look to continue their recent winning ways Sunday when they eye a three-game home sweep of the Los Angeles Angels.

Zunino capped Seattle's six-run first inning in Friday's 6-4 victory with a three-run blast out of the eight-hole before No. 9 hitter and former Angel O'Malley delivered a three-run shot of his own in the seventh to put an exclamation point on the Mariners' rally from an early four-run deficit in Saturday's 8-6 triumph. Seattle (55-52) has won four of five since hitting the breakeven mark Monday and finds itself 4 1/2 games behind Detroit (61-49) for the second wild-card spot in the American League. Meanwhile, Los Angeles (49-61) has dropped three straight and eight of its last 10 road games to fall within a game of joining AL West-worst Oakland (48-62) in the division cellar. The slide has not affected the bat of Mike Trout, who will turn 25 on Sunday, as the five-time All-Star went 2-for-3 with a home run and four RBIs on Saturday and is 10-for-21 with nine RBIs in his last seven games.

TV: 4:10 p.m. ET, FSN West (Los Angeles), ROOT (Seattle)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Angels RH Matt Shoemaker (6-11, 4.08 ERA) vs. Mariners LH James Paxton (3-5, 3.93)

Shoemaker surprisingly struggled with control and keeping the ball in the park in Tuesday's victory over Oakland, permitting two solo shots among the six hits and three walks he allowed over seven innings. The three free passes were the most the Michigan native has issued over his last 16 turns, while the two homers he gave up matched the total he had surrendered over his previous six outings combined. Shoemaker took the loss against Seattle during his awful opening month in April, yielding six earned runs in three frames.

Paxton was brilliant in a no-decision versus Boston on Monday, surrendering only a solo homer among the four hits he allowed over eight innings. The 27-year-old Kentucky product has posted 21 strikeouts and only two walks across his last three outings, going 1-1 with a 2.25 ERA over that stretch. Paxton was forced to settle for another no-decision in his previous start versus the Angels last May despite giving up two runs on four hits over seven innings, leaving him with a 2-2 record and 2.65 ERA in six outings against them.

WALK-OFFS

1. The Angels designated RHP Tim LIncecum for assignment and recalled RHP Jose Valdez from Triple-A Salt Lake. Valdez made his big-league debut Saturday, becoming the 25th pitcher used by the team this season.

2. Seattle closer Edwin Diaz likely will be unavailable for Sunday's finale after collecting his first four career saves over the last five days.

3. Los Angeles' bullpen has surrendered 16 earned runs over its last 20 innings.

GAME: Miami Marlins (58-52) at Colorado Rockies (55-55)
DATE/TIME: Sunday, August 07 - 4:10 PM EST
WHERE: Coors Field, Denver, Colorado
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Colorado Rockies aim to get back above .500 and claim another series win when they wrap up a three-game set with the visiting Miami Marlins on Sunday. A seven-run sixth inning propelled the Rockies to a 12-6 victory on Saturday, leaving them a rubber-game win away from taking a fifth consecutive series.

The surge has the club, which was eight games below .500 entering the All-Star break, back at the even mark and within three games of a wild-card spot in the National League. One of the bright spots for the Marlins was Giancarlo Stanton, who slugged the longest home run in Coors Field history (504 feet) and drove in a pair of runs as he continues to feast on Colorado pitching. Another was the 2,999th career hit for Ichiro Suzuki, who grounded out in the ninth in his first chance at becoming the 30th player in baseball history to reach 3,000. Stanton, Suzuki and their teammates should have their hands full against surging Colorado right-hander Jon Gray, who will be opposed by Adam Conley in the series finale.

TV: 4:10 p.m. ET, FSN Florida (Miami), ROOT (Colorado)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Marlins LH Adam Conley (7-6, 3.41 ERA) vs. Rockies RH Jon Gray (8-4, 3.77)

After going 3-0 with a 1.82 ERA in five starts last month, Conley opened August with a clunker. He was charged with just two runs in four innings but gave up five hits, walked six and hit a batter in a loss at the Chicago Cubs. The 26-year-old also handed out five free passes over 5 2/3 frames in his only previous meeting with Colorado earlier this season, but he limited the Rockies to one run and one hit.

Gray is 3-0 with a 0.69 ERA in a four-start hot stretch, which includes five scoreless innings in a win over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Tuesday. That left the former first-round pick at 5-0 with a 3.83 mark in nine starts at home. Gray was the losing pitcher opposite Conley on June 17 in Miami despite allowing two runs in six innings.

WALK-OFFS

1. Colorado is 16-8 against the NL East.

2. Rockies OF David Dahl has hit safely in all 12 games since being promoted from the minors on July 25, batting .380 in that span.

3. Stanton is 17-for-38 with 14 RBIs during a 10-game hitting streak versus the Rockies, and his 16 homers against them represents his high versus any team outside the NL East.

GAME: Philadelphia Phillies (51-61) at San Diego Padres (48-62)
DATE/TIME: Sunday, August 07 - 4:40 PM EST
WHERE: Petco Park, San Diego, California
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

San Diego aims for its first back-to-back wins in nearly a month on Sunday as the Padres face the visiting Philadelphia Phillies in the rubber match of a three-game series. The Padres, who collected 14 hits in Saturday's 9-7 victory, have not won consecutive games since coming out of the All-Star break with a three-game sweep of San Francisco on July 15-17.

The Phillies have won three of their last five games but need more production from All-Star outfielder Odubel Herrera and left fielder Cody Asche. The struggling Herrera has been rested by manager Pete Mackanin in four of the last five games and was 0-for-4 on Saturday, while Asche is batting .216 and hasn’t recorded a multi-hit game since July 5. While the Phillies look for a spark in their lineup, San Diego manager Andy Green continues to be pleased by the play of leadoff hitter Travis Jankowski, who is making a strong case to be next season’s opening day starter in center field while going 12-for-23 with 11 runs scored and seven steals over his last six games. The rebuilding Padres also are giving an extended look to left fielder Alex Dickerson (.293) and rookie right fielder Jabari Blash, who blasted 32 homers in the minors last season but is batting .182 in 44 at-bats.

TV: 4:40 p.m. ET, CSN Philadelphia, FSN San Diego

PITCHING MATCHUP: Phillies RH Jerad Eickhoff (6-12, 3.68 ERA) vs. Padres RH Jarred Cosart (0-1, 5.09)

Eickhoff is hoping to build on an encouraging outing last Sunday when he tossed five innings of scoreless, two-hit ball against Atlanta before leaving because of a rain delay. The 26-year-old leads the National League lead in losses after finishing July with a 1-3 mark and 4.50 ERA in six starts. Eickhoff shut out the Padres over seven innings and struck out nine with no walks in a 2-1 victory in Philadelphia on April 13.

Cosart made his San Diego debut Monday against Milwaukee and tied a season high with six walks while battling a blister over 3 1/3 scoreless innings. The 26-year-old was originally drafted by Philadelphia in the 38th round of the 2008 draft but never pitched for the Phillies. Cosart has gone 1-1 with a sparkling 1.80 ERA in four career starts against Philadelphia, including five scoreless innings as a member of the Marlins on July 25.

WALK-OFFS

1. The Phillies are 31-11 at Petco Park since it opened in 2004.

2. Philadelphia OF Peter Bourjos (shoulder) began a minor league rehab assignment with Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Saturday and homered in five at-bats.

3. The Padres signed LHP Clayton Richard and designated LHP Matt Thornton for assignment.

GAME: Boston Red Sox (60-49) at Los Angeles Dodgers (61-49)
DATE/TIME: Sunday, August 07 - 7:10 PM EST
WHERE: Dodger Stadium, Los Angeles, California
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Los Angeles Dodgers and Boston Red Sox are fighting for the top spot in their respective divisions and are trading shutouts with each other this weekend. The Red Sox will try to end their 11-game road trip with a winning record when they visit the Dodgers for the rubber match of their three-game series on Sunday.

Boston is trying to keep pace with co-leaders Baltimore and Toronto in the American League East and is struggling to find consistency with its league-best offense of late. The Red Sox have managed three or fewer runs eight times in their last 13 games, including a 3-0 loss on Saturday in which David Ortiz went 0-for-3 to drop to 6-for-44 over his last 11 games. Los Angeles was shut out 9-0 in the series opener on Friday but bounced back with its own blanking on Saturday to keep close to first-place San Francisco in the National League West. All-Star closer Kenley Jansen continued a strong trend by striking out the side in a perfect ninth inning on Saturday and is doing his part to keep the Dodgers in the race by allowing one hit while fanning 10 in 5 1/3 frames over his last five appearances.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, MLB Network, NESN (Boston), SportsNet LA (Los Angeles)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Red Sox LH David Price (9-7, 4.30 ERA) vs. Dodgers RH Brandon McCarthy (2-2, 2.76)

Price cruised through seven scoreless innings in Seattle on Tuesday and was in line for the win before surrendering a leadoff homer in the eighth and yielding three more runs in the frame without recording an out. The former Cy Young Award winner put up eight scoreless innings at the Los Angeles Angels to begin the road trip on July 28 but did not factor in the decision in a game Boston went on to lose 2-1. Price is making his second career start against the Dodgers and is 12-11 with a 3.39 ERA in 28 career interleague turns.

McCarthy is getting the nod in place of left-hander Rich Hill, who was set to make his team debut after being acquired from Oakland at the trade deadline but still is dealing with a blister on his pitching hand. McCarthy suffered the loss in each of his last two starts and failed to record an out in the fifth inning of either outing. The 33-year-old was charged with three runs – two earned - on three hits and five walks in three frames at Colorado on Tuesday.

WALK-OFFS

1. Red Sox 2B Dustin Pedroia (leg contusion) sat out Saturday while 1B Hanley Ramirez (wrist) was limited to pinch-hitting.

2. Dodgers SS Corey Seager recorded his 31st double on Saturday, breaking Eric Karros’ rookie franchise record.

3. Boston RF Mookie Betts is 5-for-9 in the series and has recorded multiple hits in five of his last seven games.

PREDICTION: Red Sox 5, Dodgers 3
