Bonus Play Sunday

BLUE JAYS (Stroman) at ROYALS (Ventura) 2:15 PM

Take: BLUE JAYS -146

Marcus Stroman heads into today’s duel with the Royals off his best start of the 2016 campaign. Stroman was spectacular in dominating the Astros on Monday night. Toronto ended up losing that game 2-1 in what turned out to be a 14-inning marathon. But that sure wasn’t the fault of Stroman. Instead, it was the Blue Jays offense that suffered a tough night against Doug Fister and company.

Stroman draws Yordano Ventura as his mound adversary today, and Ventura is the type of pitcher the Blue Jaus should have a chance to do some damage against. Ventura has not been good for KC this season, and his failures are definitely part of the reason the Royals won’t be playing baseball in October this time around. Ventur’s walk rate is higher than it should be, and his K rate is a pretty lowly 6.64. That’s almost shocking considering how hard he throws and how many big strikeout numbers there are this season throughout the game.

It really seems as though Ventura has been figured out. Patience is unquestionably a virtue against this righty. Hitters are letting him beat himself by falling behind in the count and then forcing him to get too much of the plate. That has resulted in some mediocre numbers across the board for Ventura. And this tendency could really come into play today. The Blue Jays have the best team walk rate in the American League, and with their power, Toronto is the type of team that might have some great chances to post crooked numbers today against Ventura.

The series is even at one game apiece, as the Jays ran into red hot Danny Duffy on Saturday night and absorbed a 4-2 loss. I believe they have a very good chance to get back on track against Ventura, and with the hopeful buy sign indicated by Stroman on Monday night, I will go ahead and play the favored Toronto side today.

(921) TORONTO BLUE JAYS VS (922) KANSAS CITY ROYALS

Take: Over

Reason: Your Bonus Play for Sunday, August 7, 2016 is in the baseball contest between the Toronto Blue Jays and the Royals in Kansas City. Toronto York heads out on the road with a powerhouse offense, Top 6 in runs scored. The Over is 4-1 in Marcus Stroman's last 5 starts vs. a team with a losing record. The Over is 5-1-1 in the Royals last 7 home games vs. a team with a winning road record. Starter Yordano Ventura (4.83 ERA) hasn't been able to throw strikes all year, walking 50 in 119 innings. His last 18 innings (three starts) he's walked nine batters. The Over is 8-3-2 in Ventura's last 13 starts vs. the American League East. Play Toronto/Kansas City Over the total.

Angels vs Mariners

Bonus Play Seattle Mariners

Seattle goes for the sweep with James Paxton on the mound. Paxton has allowed five runs and 13 hits in his last three starts with 21 strikeouts to just two walks. The southpaw held down a potent Red Sox team last time out and is 2-2 with a 2.65 ERA in six starts against the Angels. The Angels are scoring just 3.8 runs per game vs. left-handed starters and are 13-19 in day games. Matt Shoemaker is 3-7 with a 5.00 ERA in 11 road starts. He has lost two of his last three outings. He was shelled by Seattle at home back in April allowing seven runs and six hits in three innings. Seattle is hitting .268 against right-handed starters scoring 5.2 runs per game. They are averaging nearly five runs per contest in day games and will face an Angels team that has a decimated back end of the bullpen. I like the Mariners on Sunday afternoon.

Marlins vs Rockies

Bonus Play Colorado Rockies

Maybe it's because he pitches for Colorado, but Jon Gray is under-the-radar despite his high ceiling. He is 4-1 with a 2.18 ERA in his last seven starts. Gray has given up just four runs in his past five starts posting a 1.11 ERA while holding batters to a .189 average.
I don't see Marlins youngster Adam Conley keeping up with Gray. Conley has a 3.92 road ERA and is off his worst game in more than a month throwing 97 pitches and walking six in four innings against the Cubs this past Monday.
Now Conley gets to enjoy the pleasures of pitching at Coors Field. You can't be wild and survive pitching at Coors Field.
The Marlins are 2-10 the past 12 times they've been on the road facing an opponent with a winning home record.
Colorado is playing good ball winning 12 of its last 16, while going 7-2 in its last nine home contests. (Editor's note: Stephen Nover went unbeaten on his Friday and Saturday plays. Stephen is heavily involved in the Hall of Fame Game and has three baseball plays in addition to this Bonus Play.)

CLE vs NYY

Bonus Play OVER 8

Prior to yesterday's game, which finished with seven, the Indians had seen five straight games produce a minimum of 11 combined runs. Those five games had scores of 17, 16, 18, 11 and 20. That's an average of greater than 16 runs per game. I won't be surprised if this afternoon's finale at NY also proves higher-scoring than many will be expecting.

Tanaka and Carrasco are both certainly capable of pitching well; both are having solid seasons. That said, each of them really struggled last time out. Carrasco gave up eight runs against Kepler and the Twins, lasting only 3 2/3 innings. Tanaka was a little better, but not by that much. He gave up seven earned runs. They both served up a pair of long-balls.

Tanaka and Carrasco opposed each other, at Cleveland, a little less than a month ago. While it can partly be blamed on the defense, neither fared well in that 7/10 contest, the Yankees ultimately winning 11-7. Tanaka gave up seven runs (3 earned) on 10 hits, lasting only 4 2/3 innings. Carrasco lasted only 3 2 2/3 innings, giving up five (1 earned) runs on five hits. Each pitcher walked a pair of batters and each allowed a ball to leave the yard. Overall, Carrasco has seen the "over" go 5-2 against the Yankees, while posting a 4.03 ERA. Meanwhile, Tanaka is 0-2 with a poor 5.71 ERA and 1.788 WHIP in three starts vs. the Indians, all three of which finished above the total. Take a look at the Over.

Play - Texas Rangers w/Darvish

Edges - Rangers: Yu Darvish 3-1 career team starts in Houston; and 26Ks and 2 BBs last three starts. Astros: 4-17 last 21 games in this series; With that look for the Rangers to improve to 12-5 on Sundays this season here this afternoon. We recommend a 1* play on Texas. Thank you and good luck as always.

Hondo

Hondo goes to Mas’

The Giants put the finishing touch on a week’s worth of Hondo victories Saturday night when they defied the huge odds against the Nationals to lift the earnings to 3,539 guldens.

Sunday: Mr. Aitch will give Tanaka a ’hiro’s welcome if he is able to shut down the Tribe — 20 units on the Yankees.

Preview: Indians at Yankees

GAME: Cleveland Indians (62-46) at New York Yankees (55-55)
DATE/TIME: Sunday, August 07 - 1:05 PM EST
WHERE: Yankee Stadium, Bronx, New York
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

Cleveland Indians reliever Andrew Miller told reporters after nailing down his first save against his former team - the New York Yankees - that he was happy he "survived and found a way". Cleveland will try to follow that mantra and put a pleasant ending on what had been a difficult week Sunday when it attempts to take the rubber match of a three-game road set against the Yankees.

The Indians ran into a Max Kepler-led buzzsaw earlier in the week as Minnesota outscored them 35-16 over the first three contests of their four-game home set, but the American League Central leaders have righted the ship somewhat by winning two of their last three. Cleveland hit three home runs to back Corey Kluber's strong eight-inning effort in Saturday's 5-2 win in New York, and Miller overcame a leadoff single in the ninth for his 10th save of the season. "None of it was fun, honestly. It's tough. It's just a huge distraction," Miller told reporters in regards to facing his former team after the game. The Yankees (55-55) appeared to be surging when they climbed a season-high four games over .500 on July 26 despite opting to become sellers at the trade deadline, but they have dropped seven of 10 since, scoring no more than three runs in any of their losses.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Indians RH Carlos Carrasco (7-5, 3.12 ERA) vs. Yankees RH Masahiro Tanaka (7-4, 3.46)

Carrasco saw his streak of nine straight starts allowing three or fewer earned runs halted in Tuesday's loss to Minnesota, giving up a career-high eight runs over 3 2/3 innings. The 29-year-old Venezuelan hasn't been nearly as intimidating since fanning 14 in 7 2/3 frames on June 30, striking out only 24 over his last 32 frames while recording no more than six in any of the six turns. Carrasco's worst outing over that stretch came in a July 10 setback versus the Yankees, as he yielded five runs (one earned) across 3 2/3 innings.

Tanaka struggled for the third straight time on the road in Tuesday's loss to the New York Mets, surrendering a season high-tying six earned runs in 6 1/3 frames. The 2014 All-Star thrived in two July turns at Yankee Stadium, however, allowing one run on seven hits while striking out 11 over 12 innings. Despite being staked to an 11-1 fifth-inning lead on July 10 in Cleveland, Tanaka fell one out short of qualifying for the victory after getting charged with seven runs (three earned) over 4 2/3 innings.

WALK-OFFS

1. Cleveland has scored at least five runs in nine straight games for the first time since July 17-26, 2002.

2. Yankees C Gary Sanchez has at least one hit in each of the four games he's played since his promotion on Wednesday, including one double in three consecutive contests.

3. The Indians have clubbed 19 homers over their last nine games after going a season-high five straight games without one.

Preview: Mets at Tigers

GAME: New York Mets (56-54) at Detroit Tigers (61-49)
DATE/TIME: Sunday, August 07 - 1:10 PM EST
WHERE: Comerica Park, Detroit, Michigan
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

Jacob deGrom has been one of the few constants for the sliding New York Mets, who will look to their third-year right-hander to avert a three-game sweep at the hands of the host Detroit Tigers on Sunday afternoon. The Tigers have ripped off 10 wins in their last 11 games to remain two back of first-place Cleveland in the American League Central.

First baseman Miguel Cabrera is 13-for-25 with four homers, 12 RBIs and eight runs scored during a six-game hitting streak as Detroit improved to 12-4 in interleague play this season. Cabrera has 21 RBIs over his last 15 games to move into 52nd place on the all-time list with 1,519. Recently acquired Jay Bruce homered for the second time in three contests for New York, which remains two games out of the second wild card despite going 3-8 in its last 11. DeGrom carries a 14-inning scoreless streak into Sunday's start and will be opposed by veteran right-hander Anibal Sanchez.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Mets RH Jacob deGrom (7-5, 2.41 ERA) vs. Tigers RH Anibal Sánchez (6-11, 6.26)

DeGrom continued his string of strong starts last time out against the New York Yankees, striking out eight over seven innings of four-hit ball. He also worked seven scoreless innings in a no-decision versus Colorado in his previous turn and has not surrendered a run in three of his last four outings. The 28-year-old deGrom has registered 10 quality starts in his last 12 outings and is 2-3 with a 3.02 ERA in eight road outings.

Sanchez avoided being banished to the bullpen with a strong outing versus the Chicago White Sox last time out, permitting one run over six innings to earn his first win as a starter since April 28. He was 0-3 over his previous four starts, giving up a total of 19 runs and 30 hits in a span of 20 1/3 innings. The 32-year-old Sanchez has made 11 career starts against the Mets, logging a 4-5 record, 4.45 ERA and .308 batting average against.

WALK-OFFS

1. Tigers 3B Nick Castellanos suffered a non-displaced fracture of the fifth metacarpal on his left hand when he was hit by a pitch Saturday.

2. Bruce is 4-for-10 with four RBIs since going hitless in his first 10-at bats with New York following the trade with Cincinnati.

3. Tigers backup C Jarrod Saltalamacchia is 3-for-7 with nine RBIs this season with the bases loaded.

Preview: Twins at Rays

GAME: Minnesota Twins (44-66) at Tampa Bay Rays (45-64)
DATE/TIME: Sunday, August 07 - 1:10 PM EST
WHERE: Tropicana Field, St. Petersburg, Florida
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Tampa Bay Rays and Minnesota Twins share more than just their lot in the standings as the cellar-dwelling clubs each quietly have won seven of their last 10. The Rays and Twins will look to extend their recent bit of good fortune in an otherwise unlucky season on Sunday afternoon when the American League bottom feeders play the rubber match of their three-game series in St. Petersburg, Fla.

Brad Miller had an RBI single in Saturday's 7-3 victory over Minnesota to extend his hitting streak to five games, during which he has three homers, six RBIs and as many runs scored. Evan Longoria snapped a 2-for-26 slump by going deep among his two hits on Saturday and is 4-for-10 versus Sunday starter Kyle Gibson to join the 26-year-old Miller (5-for-11) in taking the right-hander to task. Jorge Polanco, who ripped a two-run single on Saturday, is 11-for-28 with six RBIs in seven games since returning to the Twins' lineup. Brian Dozier had an RBI double to extend his career-high hitting streak to 15 games and is 3-for-6 with a homer and four RBIs in his career versus Sunday starter Matt Andriese.

TV: 1:10 p.m. ET, FSN North (Minnesota), FSN Sun (Tampa Bay)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Twins RH Kyle Gibson (3-6, 4.94 ERA) vs. Rays RH Matt Andriese (6-2, 2.72)

Gibson was unable to take advantage of an 8-0 lead against Cleveland on Tuesday and exited with a no-decision after allowing six runs on 10 hits in 4 2/3 innings. The 28-year-old will look to rebound versus Tampa Bay, against which he is 0-4 with a bloated 8.85 ERA while permitting 20 runs on 31 hits. The Rays are batting a robust .360 as a team against Gibson, who has surrendered five homers in his last four games.

With Matt Moore now in San Francisco, Andriese returned to the rotation and allowed one run on three hits in four innings of a no-decision versus Kansas City on Tuesday. The 26-year-old owns a 5-1 mark with a 2.87 ERA as a starter and picked up the win in his last meeting with Minnesota on June 4 after permitting three runs in five innings. Andriese was victorious in his following two trips to the mound, but has since gone 0-1 with one save in his subsequent 11 appearances.

WALK-OFFS

1. Tampa Bay clinched its first winning homestand of the season on Saturday, with the club posting a 6-3 mark in the 10-game stretch.

2. Twins veteran 1B Joe Mauer has reached base safely in 21 straight games versus the Rays.

3. Tampa Bay 2B Logan Forsythe is 9-for-20 with eight runs scored in August.

Preview: Reds at Pirates

GAME: Cincinnati Reds (44-65) at Pittsburgh Pirates (55-53)
DATE/TIME: Sunday, August 07 - 1:35 PM EST
WHERE: PNC Park, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Pittsburgh Pirates will go for their first series sweep in more than a month when they close out a three-game set against the visiting Cincinnati Reds on Sunday afternoon. Pirates right-hander Gerrit Cole, who has allowed one earned run in each of his last three starts, looks to earn his first win against Cincinnati.

Cole has come up empty in all seven career starts against the Reds, who had their streak of six consecutive series wins since the All-Star break snapped. Pittsburgh left fielder Starling Marte has hit safely in 11 of his last 12 games for Pittsburgh, which is two games behind Miami and St. Louis for the second wild card. Cincinnati second baseman Brandon Phillips ended career-worst streaks of 72 games and 286 at-bats without a homer by going deep twice Saturday. It continued a torrid stretch for Phillips, who is 9-for-15 with two homers, two doubles, six RBIs and six runs scored in the last four games.

TV: 1:35 p.m. ET, FSN Ohio (Cincinnati), ROOT (Pittsburgh)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Reds RH Dan Straily (6-6, 3.80 ERA) vs. Pirates RH Gerrit Cole (7-6, 2.73)

Although Straily did not factor in the decision versus St. Louis on Tuesday, he extended his streak of quality starts to six by permitting two runs and five hits over six innings. The 27-year-old was 2-0 over his previous three turns, allowing a combined three runs and 11 hits over 20 2/3 innings. Straily is 0-1 in three appearances (two starts) against the Pirates this season, giving up four earned runs over 15 innings.

After going winless over a span of six starts, Cole has been victorious in his last two trips to the mound. The former No. 1 overall draft pick allowed one earned run over five innings at Atlanta last time out and tossed a complete-game three-hitter in a win over Seattle in his previous turn. Phillips is 6-for-16 against Cole, who fell to 0-5 lifetime against the Reds with 4 2/3 innings of three-run ball in his season debut.

WALK-OFFS

1. Pirates 3B David Freese was hit by a pitch Saturday and later exited the game with left elbow discomfort.

2. Reds SS Zack Cozart is riding a 14-game hitting streak.

3. The Pirates traded RHP Arquimedes Caminero to Seattle on Saturday and shifted LHP Jeff Locke to the bullpen.

PREDICTION: Pirates 4, Reds 2
