Gracenote

Robinson Cano hopes to add to his historic doubles total when his Seattle Mariners visit the Kansas City Royals on Sunday for a traditional doubleheader that will conclude their four-game series. The 34-year-old Cano, who was denied that chance when Saturday's contest was rained out, became the 63rd player in major-league history to record 500 career two-base hits in Seattle's 5-2 victory on Friday.

Mariners slugger Nelson Cruz was in Saturday's starting lineup before the game was washed away and is expected to play Sunday after being scratched from Friday's triumph due to back spasms. The All-Star is tied for the American League lead with 80 RBIs. Seattle has won five of its last seven contests and is 1 1/2 games behind Kansas City, which holds the second AL wild-card spot despite having lost four of five. The Royals have scored a total of 11 runs in that span, with six coming in the lone victory, while Eric Hosmer has gone 0-for-8 over the first two contests of the series following an eight-game hitting streak.

TV: 2:15 p.m. ET, ROOT Northwest (Seattle), FSN Kansas City

PITCHING MATCHUP: Mariners LH Marco Gonzales (0-0, 13.50 ERA) vs. Royals LH Danny Duffy (7-6, 3.42)

Gonzales will start the opener of the twinbill after being recalled from Triple-A Tacoma to fill in Saturday for Felix Hernandez, who landed on the 10-day disabled list with tendinitis in his right biceps. The 25-year-old native of Colorado was tagged by Milwaukee for five runs and six hits - three homers - over 3 1/3 innings of a no-decision on June 13 while with St. Louis before being acquired by Seattle on July 21. Gonzales, who will be facing Kansas City for the first time, is 4-2 with a 5.53 ERA in 12 major-league appearances (seven starts) - all with the Cardinals.

Duffy settled for a no-decision at Baltimore on Monday, when he worked seven innings while allowing just one run for the third time in four starts. The 28-year-old Californian has pitched well at home of late, going 2-1 in his last four turns while giving up fewer than three runs in three of the outings. Duffy defeated the Mariners on July 4, when he yielded two runs and five hits in 5 2/3 frames at Seattle.

WALK-OFFS

1. Royals C Salvador Perez may land on the disabled list due to the intercostal strain he suffered in Friday's loss.

2. Mariners CF Jarrod Dyson is 4-for-7 with two stolen bases in the series against his former club.

3. Seattle C Mike Zunino is hitless in seven at-bats (four strikeouts) in the set and just 1-for-18 over his last seven contests.

GAME: Washington Nationals (64-44) at Chicago Cubs (58-51)

Preview: Nationals at Cubs

Gracenote

Aug 6, 2017

With the Washington Nationals’ pitching rotation in disarray, their three-game road series against the Chicago Cubs hasn’t exactly resembled the playoff preview it was expected to be. Nonetheless, both teams hope to get a leg up on their potential National League Division Series opponent when they play the rubber match of the set Sunday afternoon.

The Cubs snapped a three-game skid with a 7-4 win Saturday, improving to 15-6 since the All-Star break and preserving their half-game lead over Milwaukee in the NL Central. Chicago has a strong chance to take the series with ace left-hander Jon Lester starting opposite rookie right-hander Erick Fedde, who will make his second career start. The Nationals have a commanding 13-game lead over Miami in the NL East, but they’re just 7-8 over their last 15 games. Washington All-Star Bryce Harper is 4-for-9 in the series with a homer.

TV: 2:20 p.m. ET, TBS, MASN (Washington), CSN Chicago

PITCHING MATCHUP: Nationals RH Erick Fedde (0-1, 15.75 ERA) vs. Cubs LH Jon Lester (8-6, 3.96)

Fedde was roughed up in his major-league debut Sunday against Colorado, allowing seven runs and 10 hits over four innings. The 24-year-old was 4-4 with a 3.72 ERA in 27 games (11 starts) between Double-A and Triple-A before being called up. Fedde was a first-round draft pick out of UNLV in 2014.

Lester was lights-out in his first three starts following the All-Star break, but he wasted a great opportunity to win a fourth straight start last time out. The 33-year-old was staked to a big lead Tuesday against Arizona but couldn’t get out of the fifth inning, as he allowed three runs in four-plus frames with nine strikeouts. Lester is 2-1 with a 2.53 ERA in five starts against the Nationals, including a no-decision this season in which he allowed one run and three hits over six innings.

WALK-OFFS

1. Cubs C Willson Contreras boasts three homers and nine RBIs in his past three games and has reached base in a career-high 19 consecutive starts.

2. Washington C Matt Wieters is 16-for-49 with three doubles, a triple, and eight RBIs against Lester.

3. Chicago RHP Wade Davis converted his 23rd consecutive save opportunity Saturday, a single-season club record and three shy of the overall franchise mark of 26 set by Ryan Dempster spanning the 2005 and 2006 seasons.

GAME: Philadelphia Phillies (39-69) at Colorado Rockies (64-47)
DATE/TIME: Sunday, August 06 - 3:10 PM EST
WHERE: Coors Field, Denver, Colorado
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

Preview: Phillies at Rockies

Gracenote

Aug 6, 2017

The Colorado Rockies have spent a good chunk of the second half of their season battling National League East teams, and the recent success they have enjoyed against that division over that time has kept them in great shape regarding a wild-card spot. The Rockies hope to maintain their season-long domination of the Philadelphia Phillies by completing a three-game home sweep on Sunday as the teams conclude their season series.

Colorado, which will finish a stretch during which it plays nine straight games against the East with Sunday's finale, improved to 6-2 over that span after scoring all of its runs in the first three innings of Saturday's 8-5 victory over Philadelphia. The Rockies have mostly toyed with the Phillies while winning five of the six meetings, outscoring them 36-15 this season while suffering their only loss in a 2-1, 11-inning setback on May 25. While Colorado has kept a firm grip on its 5 1/2-game lead over Milwaukee for a wild-card spot, Philadelphia has maintained its hold on the worst road mark (16-41) and overall record (39-69) in the majors. Although the Phillies dropped their fifth straight contest, Daniel Nava drove in three runs in Saturday's setback and finished a double shy of the cycle.

TV: 3:10 p.m. ET, CSN Philadelphia, AT&T SportsNet - Rocky Mountain (Colorado)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Phillies RH Aaron Nola (8-7, 3.16 ERA) vs. Rockies RH Jeff Hoffman (6-3, 5.38)

Nola moved within one turn of Cole Hamels' club record of nine consecutive starts in which he's allowed fewer than three runs on Tuesday, taking the loss despite yielding only two runs and eight hits over six innings versus the Los Angeles Angels. The Louisiana native has been masterful over the last 1 1/2 months, going 5-2 with a 1.66 ERA while striking out 63 in 54 1/3 frames. Nola is 3-4 with a 3.46 ERA in his nine road outings this season as he enters his first career start versus the Rockies.

Hoffman enjoyed his finest performance in nearly a month during a no-decision Tuesday against the New York Mets, allowing two runs and five hits while fanning five in six frames. The 24-year-old East Carolina product turned in his first quality start since July 3 with the effort after compiling a 1-2 record and 9.45 ERA over his previous four outings. Hoffman notched his lone win over that stretch in New York on July 16 despite permitting four runs and seven hits - including a pair of homers - over six innings.

WALK-OFFS

1. Since coming off the disabled list on July 7, Rockies OF Gerardo Parra leads the NL with a .443 batting average.

2. Philadelphia RHP Mark Leiter Jr. fanned nine without issuing a walk in 4 1/3 innings on Saturday, becoming the first reliever to record a nine-strikeout, no-walk appearance since Minnesota's Mark Guthrie in 1995.

3. Colorado OF Charlie Blackmon leads the majors with 99 runs and is one shy of scoring 100 for the second straight season. He also paces all hitters with 13 triples, one fewer than his combined total from the previous two years.

Preview: Athletics at Angels

Gracenote

Aug 6, 2017

With their hopes for a perfect homestand now over, the Los Angeles Angels attempt to clinch a winning record over the nine-game stretch with a victory over the visiting Oakland Athletics on Sunday in the rubber match of their three-game series. Los Angeles began the string of home contests with four straight wins before suffering a 5-0 loss on Saturday.

The Angels managed only six hits - all singles - in the setback and fell 2 1/2 games behind Kansas City for the second wild-card spot in the American League. Ben Revere and Kole Calhoun each recorded two of the singles while Mike Trout notched one, making him 14-for-30 during his eight-game hitting streak. Rajai Davis went 2-for-5 with three stolen bases and a run scored on Saturday for Oakland, which ended its seven-game losing streak at Angel Stadium. Chad Pinder recorded the only extra-base hit of the contest - a double - and is 5-for-12 over his last three games for the Athletics, who will be without Matt Joyce as the outfielder finishes serving the two-game suspension he received from Major League Baseball for using a homophobic slur to a fan on Friday.

TV: 3:37 p.m. ET, NBCSN California (Oakland), FSN West (Los Angeles)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Athletics LH Sean Manaea (8-6, 3.88 ERA) vs. Angels RH Ricky Nolasco (5-12, 4.90)

Manaea's winless streak reached three starts Tuesday as he surrendered six runs - two earned - and nine hits in three innings in a loss against San Francisco. The 25-year-old Indiana native has posted just one victory in his last six turns despite giving up three earned runs or fewer five times in that span. Manaea has yet to defeat the Angels as he is 0-2 with a 5.23 ERA in four career starts, including a loss at Los Angeles on April 26 in which he yielded three runs over two frames.

Nolasco halted his four-start drought on Tuesday as he recorded the win against Philadelphia after allowing one run and six hits in six innings. It was the 34-year-old Californian's first victory since tossing the sixth shutout of his career - a three-hitter versus Seattle on July 1. Nolasco is 4-3 with one shutout and a 3.26 ERA in 10 career starts against Oakland, including a 1-1 record and 2.95 ERA in three turns this season.

WALK-OFFS

1. The Angels activated LHP Tyler Skaggs, who started and lost Saturday's contest, from the 60-day disabled list and optioned RHP Daniel Wright to Triple-A Salt Lake.

2. Oakland added Dustin Garneau to the active roster a day after claiming him off waivers from Colorado and designated fellow C Ryan Lavarnway for assignment.

3. Los Angeles OF Cameron Maybin (knee) began a rehab assignment with Salt Lake on Friday and could be activated as soon as Monday.

GAME: Arizona Diamondbacks (63-47) at San Francisco Giants (43-69)

Preview: Diamondbacks at Giants

Gracenote

Aug 6, 2017

The Arizona Diamondbacks are enjoying one of the best seasons in franchise history and the San Francisco Giants are suffering through one of their worst, but very little has separated the National League West rivals when they have squared off this year. After squandering a late four-run lead en route to a crushing defeat in their last contest, the Diamondbacks hope to rebound by taking the rubber match of their three-game set in San Francisco on Sunday.

After using three perfect relief innings to hold on to a 2-1 victory in the series opener, Arizona took a 4-0 lead into the seventh inning Saturday before allowing five unanswered runs - including Jarrett Parker's two-out, walk-off infield single in the 10th to spoil what could have been its fourth straight win. Instead, the Diamondbacks fell one-half game behind second-place Colorado in the West and swapped places with the Rockies in the wild-card chase as well. NL West-worst San Francisco has alternated wins and losses since ending a four-game skid in Oakland on Tuesday, but the team has held its own against Arizona despite its overall struggles this season, going 4-5 against the Diamondbacks and outscoring them by a run (41-40). Hunter Pence has picked things up offensively of late, belting three of his nine homers this season during a seven-game hitting streak.

TV: 4:05 p.m. ET, FSN Arizona, NBCSN Bay Area (San Francisco)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Diamondbacks LH Patrick Corbin (8-10, 4.77 ERA) vs. Giants RH Jeff Samardzija (6-11, 4.77)

After going 2-1 with a 2.59 ERA over his previous four outings. Corbin was blasted for eight runs and 10 hits - including three homers - while working a season-low three innings in a loss at the Chicago Cubs on Tuesday. The defeat left the 2013 All-Star with a 2-7 record and 7.06 ERA in 10 road turns this season. Pence is 14-for-28 with four home runs versus Corbin, who took the loss against the Giants on April 4 after permitting three runs in four frames.

Samardzija took advantage of some early run support and matched a season high by tossing eight innings Tuesday in Oakland, allowing four runs en route to his second victory in as many starts. The 32-year-old Notre Dame alum was masterful in his previous outing, yielding one run while fanning eight in seven frames against Pittsburgh on July 26. Samardzija made his first two starts of the season against the Diamondbacks in early April, taking the loss both times while giving up nine runs over 12 innings.

WALK-OFFS

1. Despite a 1-for-4 performance on Saturday, Diamondbacks 1B Paul Goldschmidt is batting .463 with four homers and 15 RBIs in 12 games since OF J.D. Martinez returned to the lineup.

2. Giants 3B Pablo Sandoval went 1-for-3 with a double on Saturday and scored a run in his first game with the team since Game 7 of the 2014 World Series.

3. Arizona C Jeff Mathis, who is batting .341 during an 11-game hitting streak, also stretched his on-base streak to a career-best 17 games.

Gracenote

Aug 6, 2017

The Los Angeles Dodgers have dominated the New York Mets this season, but then again, they’ve dominated just about everyone. The hottest team in baseball aims for its 13th win in 14 games when the Dodgers face the host Mets in the finale of a three-game series Sunday.

The Dodgers have won 43 of their last 50 games, marking the best 50-game stretch since the New York Giants also went 43-7 in 1912. "It is history in the making," Dodgers manager Dave Roberts told reporters. "This is who we are. This is a team that's going out there expecting to win, playing the right way and we are finding ways to win games. We win in different ways.” On Saturday that consisted of being no-hit for 4 2/3 innings before belting five home runs to rally for a 7-4 victory. The Mets have lost three straight and six of their last seven, and they’ve dropped eight in a row to the Dodgers, including all six meetings this season.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, ESPN

PITCHING MATCHUP: Dodgers LH Hyun-Jin Ryu (3-6, 3.83 ERA) vs. Mets LH Steven Matz (2-4, 5.50)

Ryu has not allowed more than two runs in his last five starts, posting a 2.60 ERA over that stretch. The 30-year-old South Korean is coming off his best outing of the season after striking out seven over seven scoreless frames in a no-decision against San Francisco on Sunday. Ryu is 2-0 with a 2.16 ERA in four starts against the Mets, and he limited them to two runs over five innings in a no-decision June 22 in Los Angeles.

Matz is winless in his last six starts, and he has posted a whopping 11.78 ERA over his last five outings. The 26-year-old showed improvement last time out, holding a potent Colorado lineup to three runs over five-plus innings - at Coors Field, no less - but he didn’t get a decision. Matz is 2-0 with a 2.50 ERA in three starts against the Dodgers, and he allowed three runs in six innings of a no-decision at Los Angeles on June 22.

2. Mets OF Michael Conforto hit one of New York’s four home runs Saturday and is 14-for-40 with three homers during a nine-game hitting streak.

3. Dodgers C Yasmani Grandal likely will get the day off Sunday after exiting Saturday’s game with back spasms.

Preview: Mariners at Royals (Game 2)

Gracenote

Aug 6, 2017

The Royals have scored a total of 11 runs in that span, with six coming in the lone victory, while Eric Hosmer has gone 0-for-8 over the first two games of the series following an eight-game hitting streak.

TV: 5:15 p.m. ET, ROOT Northwest (Seattle), FSN Kansas City

PITCHING MATCHUP: Mariners RH Erasmo Ramirez (4-3, 4.83 ERA) vs. Royals RH Jake Junis (3-2, 5.50)

Ramirez lasted only 3 1/3 innings in his debut for Seattle on Tuesday, when he yielded three runs and five hits - two homers - in a no-decision at Texas. The 27-year-old Nicaraguan had made six straight relief appearances for Tampa Bay before being acquired on July 28 for Steve Cishek. Ramirez, who also pitched for the Mariners from 2012-14, surrendered two runs on one hit and one walk in one inning of relief against Kansas City on May 9 while with the Rays.

Junis is expected to be recalled from Triple-A Omaha to make his seventh start for the Royals this year. The 24-year-old native of Illinois last pitched for Kansas City on July 24, when he picked up the victory after working a scoreless inning out of the bullpen at Detroit. Junis, who has gone 3-5 despite posting a 2.92 ERA in 12 starts for the Storm Chasers, will be facing Seattle for the first time.

WALK-OFFS

RECOMMENDED CHOICES
The Walker Group Picks

# 5 WORLD ELITE 7/2

# 6 SMART COOKIE 8/1

# 2 HOBNOB HILL 6/1

I give my vote to WORLD ELITE here. This mare has posted some nice finish positions in her last few tries. The average class rating alone makes this horse a definite contender. With a sound 73 average speed fig at the distance, seems well suited for today's contest. SMART COOKIE - Could best this group based on the speed figure - 80 - of her last effort. Exhibits the look of a lucrative play, averaging a solid 64 Equibase speed fig which is one of the strongest in this group. HOBNOB HILL - She has a quite good distance/surface win record - 10 out of 32. Win percentage with this jock and conditioner combo - 17 percent - formidable.

Presque Isle Downs - Race #3 - Post: 6:15pm - Claiming - 5.5 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $17,000 Class Rating: 81

Rating: 3

#6 ABBY DEAREST (ML=4/1)
#5 BEKKI'S DANCE (ML=3/1)
#3 COTTON EYE GEM (ML=6/1)

ABBY DEAREST - That last effort must not have been too hard on this mare for her to be able to race again so quickly. Ran last time around the track against much better company at Presque Isle Downs. The move down the class ladder should suit her well. BEKKI'S DANCE - Here is a true horse for the course. Loves the track here at Presque Isle Downs. All systems look good for this mare. Last work, 2nd fastest of the day, shows she's fit and ready. Is ranked number one in earnings per race. A strong effort in this event will add to that total. The most recent rating of 78 is the highest last race figure in the field. The improved speed figures over the last three races is great. Beattie drops her in this clash conditioned properly and ready to go. COTTON EYE GEM - This jock and conditioner have a lucrative return on investment when they unite. Look for this one to go straight on to victory at some pretty good odds in this field. Ran fifth in last race, but not more than 5 from the lead at the end.

Vulnerable Contenders: #4 GALE'S LOVE (ML=7/2), #1 MY JULIANA (ML=4/1), #1A FOOLS MAGIC (ML=4/1),

GALE'S LOVE - Somewhat easily forgotten speed figure last time out at Presque Isle Downs at 6 furlongs. Don't feel this pony will improve too much in today's event. MY JULIANA - Most of the time I need a sprinter to have some success lately in short distance events in order to support her. Could be tough for this horse to beat this group off of that last speed fig. Not likely to improve enough to run a figure close enough to today's Equibase class figure, so put her on the questionable challengers list. FOOLS MAGIC - Just can't wager on this horse. Didn't show me anything positive last time out or on Jul 12th.

STRAIGHT WAGERS:
Bet on #6 ABBY DEAREST to win if you can get at least 3/1 odds

Prairie Meadows - Race #3 - Post: 1:55pm - Claiming - 8.5 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $11,000 Class Rating: 82

Rating: 4

#5 TALENT RISK (ML=6/1)
#7 COLONEL CODY (ML=4/1)

TALENT RISK - This gelding is in fine form, having run a good race on Jul 21st, finishing third. Dropped down in class in the last race, running against the same type today. COLONEL CODY - Cabrera and Broberg have had wonderful success together over the last 12 months. I like that last effort on July 16th at Prairie Meadows where he finished first.

Vulnerable Contenders: #6 MR. TICKER TALKER (ML=6/5), #3 BRIDES LAST AFFAIR (ML=8/1),

MR. TICKER TALKER - This horse will in all probability be at the back of the pack as this group crosses the finish. BRIDES LAST AFFAIR - When examining today's class figure, he will have to notch a better fig than in the last race to compete in this dirt route.

STRAIGHT WAGERS:
Putting our cash on #5 TALENT RISK to win. Have to have odds of at least 2/1 or better though
