Preview: Brewers at Rays

Gracenote

Aug 6, 2017

The Tampa Bay Rays are wondering where their offense has gone as they try to avoid a three-game sweep at the hands of the visiting Milwaukee Brewers on Sunday afternoon, following a second straight shutout. The Rays returned home after scoring 26 times to win four of five games but have left 18 men on base and come up empty in 12 at-bats with runners in scoring position this series.

“We’ll be fine. It’s been a quiet couple of days,” Tampa Bay manager Kevin Cash told reporters after his team dropped 5 ½ games behind first-place Boston in the American League East and one game out of the second wild-card spot. Chris Archer takes the ball for the Rays in the finale against fellow right-hander Jimmy Nelson, who has lost just once since June 23. The Brewers, who trail the first-place Chicago Cubs by one-half game in the National League Central, may not have one of their top offensive threats in the lineup Sunday after slugger Travis Shaw suffered a neck contusion when he was hit by a throw on a steal attempt. Milwaukee won four of its last five contests, allowing eight total runs, and shortstop Orlando Arcia has stepped up offensively with seven hits in 14 at-bats in the past four.

TV: 1:10 p.m. ET, FSN Wisconsin (Milwaukee), FSN Sun (Tampa Bay)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Brewers RH Jimmy Nelson (9-5, 3.37 ERA) vs. Rays RH Chris Archer (8-6, 3.89)

Nelson has posted six quality starts in his last nine outings, including Tuesday when he allowed two runs on six hits over six innings with seven strikeouts in a win against St. Louis. The 28-year-old Oregonian owns a 4.66 ERA on the road as opposed to 2.43 at home but boasts 149 strikeouts versus only 32 walks in 133 2/3 innings overall. Wilson Ramos is 2-for-3 with a homer versus Nelson, who faces the Rays for the first time but is 6-6 with a 4.15 ERA in 14 interleague starts.

Archer has completed at least six innings in 14 straight outings with 10 quality starts in that stretch, although he was able to win in Houston Tuesday despite permitting four runs in six frames. The 28-year-old North Carolina native did not walk a batter in the outing and boasts 182 strikeouts over 148 innings overall. Shaw is 3-for-12 with a homer versus Archer, who faces Milwaukee for the first time and is 6-7 with a 2.97 ERA in 16 interleague outings.

WALK-OFFS

1. Milwaukee INF/OF Hernan Perez, who replaced Shaw at third base in the second inning Saturday, homered to extend his hitting streak to six games.

2. Tampa Bay 1B/DH Lucas Duda has reached base in all nine games since coming to the team, going 8-for-27 with seven walks.

3. The Brewers, who are 11-4 in interleague play this season, have notched back-to-back road shutouts for the first time since 2010.

Preview: Yankees at Indians

Gracenote

Aug 6, 2017

New York Yankees right-hander Luis Severino can tie CC Sabathia for the team lead in victories when he takes a five-start unbeaten streak into Sunday's matchup against the host Cleveland Indians in the finale of their four-game set. Severino will look to secure a series split after New York halted a four-game skid with Saturday's 2-1 victory.

Chase Headley provided the decisive blow with a tiebreaking homer for the Yankees, who have managed to score only eight runs over their last five games. New York's defense was dreadful in the opening two games of the series, but Brett Gardner and Ronald Torreyes each produced ninth-inning gems on Saturday to preserve the lead and keep the Yankees three games behind first-place Boston in the American League East. Cleveland, which owns a three-game lead atop the AL Central, wasted a 12-strikeout effort by Danny Salazar on Saturday and had its nine-game winning streak at Progressive Field snapped. Francisco Lindor collected a pair of hits one night after his 13-game hitting streak ended and has reached base safely in 19 in a row.

TV: 1:10 p.m. ET, YES (New York), SportsTime Ohio (Cleveland)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Yankees RH Luis Severino (8-4, 2.98 ERA) vs. Indians RH Carlos Carrasco (10-4, 3.89)

Severino had his shortest start since mid-May last time out, lasting five innings but picking up the win after allowing one run and four hits versus Detroit. The 23-year-old Dominican has permitted one earned run while striking out 23 over 19 frames during his three-start winning streak. Lindor is 3-for-6 against Severino, who is 2-1 with a 2.25 ERA in two career turns versus Cleveland.

Carrasco escaped with a no-decision after he was mauled for five runs in only 1 2/3 innings at Boston last time out and remained winless since July 7, although his previous two outings were quality starts. He was on a tear entering the All-Star break, posting a 5-0 record in a six-start span. Todd Frazier is 6-for-18 with a homer against Carrasco, who is 4-4 with a 3.67 ERA versus New York.

WALK-OFFS

1. Yankees RF Aaron Judge has struck out in 23 consecutive games, the longest streak in baseball this season.

2. Indians CF Austin Jackson's 10-game hitting streak came to an end in Saturday's loss.

3. New York DH Matt Holliday could be headed to the disabled list after tweaking his back in Friday's game.

GAME: St. Louis Cardinals (54-56) at Cincinnati Reds (45-65)

Preview: Cardinals at Reds

Gracenote

Aug 6, 2017

Adam Wainwright is expected to come off the disabled list and make his first start in two weeks when the visiting St. Louis Cardinals face the Cincinnati Reds in the rubber match of their three-game series. St. Louis won for the first time in six meetings at Great American Ball Park this season with a 4-1 victory on Saturday.

Trailing the first-place Chicago Cubs by 4 1/2 games in the National League Central, the Cardinals need a healthy Wainwright, who is 11-2 since losing his first three starts of the year before landing on the DL with tightness in his back. "I'm always going to be an optimist, but this time has (allowed) my legs to feel good, my back feels good," Wainwright told reporters after throwing a side session on Wednesday. "My head is clear." Joey Votto clubbed his 28th homer to extend his hitting streak to 10 games for Cincinnati, which had won four of five before Saturday's setback. Homer Bailey makes his ninth start of the year Sunday and is searching for his first win at home, where he's 0-3 with an 11.08 ERA.

TV: 1:10 p.m. ET, FSN Midwest (St. Louis), FSN Ohio (Cincinnati)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Cardinals RH Adam Wainwright (11-5, 4.89 ERA) vs. Reds RH Homer Bailey (3-5, 7.32)

Wainwright was on a roll prior to his back flaring up, tossing 7 2/3 innings of two-run ball in a no-decision at Chicago to run his unbeaten streak to six starts. However, He turned in one of his worst performances of the season at Cincinnati on June 6, when he was shelled for nine runs over 3 2/3 frames. Tucker Barnhart is 4-for-9 with a homer against Wainwright.

Bailey came through with a much-needed confidence booster in his last outing, earning the victory by limiting Pittsburgh to one run and four hits over six innings. That snapped a three-game losing streak during which Bailey was tagged for 17 runs and 26 hits over 16 frames. Bailey has been tormented by Matt Carpenter (17-for-29) and Yadier Molina (13-for-36, 3 HRs).

WALK-OFFS

1. Votto is 12-for-20 with three homers and six RBIs in his last six games versus St. Louis.

2. Cardinals rookie SS Paul DeJong took over the team lead with 15 home runs, all coming in 57 contests.

3. Reds All-Star SS Zack Cozart will come off the 10-day DL for the series finale.

Preview: White Sox at Red Sox

Gracenote

Aug 6, 2017

The Boston Red Sox' Andrew Benintendi watched fellow rookie Rafael Devers get all the acclaim for over a week before reminding fans why he was the most-hyped prospect in the game heading into the season. Benintendi will try to follow up a strong game and lead the American League East-leading Red Sox to a four-game sweep when they host the Chicago White Sox in the series finale on Sunday.

The 23-year-old Benintendi starred for Boston after being recalled late last season and came into the campaign as the AL Rookie of the Year favorite before going through some growing pains and ceding the spotlight to Devers, who came in hot after making his major-league debut at the end of last month. Benintendi remained a favorite of the team and was in the third spot in the order on Saturday, from where he belted a two-run homer among two hits and added a stolen base in a 4-1 win. The Arkansas product will try to provide similar support on Sunday for right-hander Doug Fister, who opposes White Sox veteran Mike Pelfrey. Chicago (41-67), which has dropped five straight, owns the worst record in the AL and has lost 19 of its last 22 games.

TV: 1:35 p.m. ET, WGN (Chicago), NESN (Boston)

PITCHING MATCHUP: White Sox RH Mike Pelfrey (3-9, 5.04 ERA) vs. Red Sox RH Doug Fister (1-5, 5.18)

Pelfrey is winless in each of his last seven starts and has served up a total of 11 runs and 13 hits in 10 2/3 innings over his last two turns. The Wichita State product failed to complete six innings in any of those seven starts and has issued 44 walks in 89 1/3 innings this season. Pelfrey was sharp in five scoreless innings against Boston on May 31, scattering two hits in a no-decision.

Fister earned his first win in a Red Sox uniform on Monday, when he surrendered two runs and five hits in 7 2/3 innings against Cleveland. The California native is getting another chance in the rotation with David Price (elbow) on the disabled list and enjoyed his longest outing of the season versus the Indians. Fister is seeing Chicago for the first time this season and is 1-3 with a 4.35 ERA in four home games - three starts.

WALK-OFFS

1. Red Sox DH Hanley Ramirez (oblique) sat out Saturday and is day-to-day.

2. Chicago DH Matt Davidson (wrist) has missed the last four games and remains day-to-day.

3. Boston's bullpen has turned in 11 1/3 scoreless innings in the series.

Preview: Padres at Pirates

Gracenote

Aug 6, 2017

Wil Myers was given a couple of days off last weekend versus the Pittsburgh Pirates in hopes he could snap out of a long slump, and San Diego Padres manager Andy Green saw that decision bear fruit one week later against the same opponent. The Padres eye a series victory in Pittsburgh on Sunday when they meet the Pirates in the rubber match of their three-game set.

Myers collected only eight hits in his final 45 at-bats of July, prompting Green to sit his first baseman for the last two games of the team's home series against Pittsburgh. The 2016 All-Star went hitless over his first 10 at-bats in August before breaking through in Saturday's 5-2 victory, finishing 2-for-3 with a run-scoring double and two-run homer to help San Diego win for the sixth time in their last nine contests. The Pirates dropped 5 1/2 games behind the Chicago Cubs in the National League Central as a result of the setback and fell to 3-7 over their last 10 games - all against opponents at least 10 games under .500. Josh Harrison, who was held out of the starting lineup for three straight contests due to a leg injury before going 3-for-5 with three RBIs as a starter in the opener, homered on Saturday to give Pittsburgh its only extra-base hit.

TV: 1:35 p.m. ET, FSN San Diego, AT&T SportsNet Pittsburgh

PITCHING MATCHUP: Padres LH Clayton Richard (5-12, 5.40 ERA) vs. Pirates RH Jameson Taillon (6-5, 4.74)

Richard lost his fourth straight start and dropped his fifth decision in six outings last Sunday against Pittsburgh, giving up four runs on seven hits and two walks across six frames. The 33-year-old Michigan product is tied with tied for the NL lead in losses and has allowed the most hits (175) in the majors, although he has done his part by eating up a team-high 133 1/3 innings. Richard is 2-2 with a 2.86 ERA in nine appearances (four starts) against the Pirates.

Taillon has struggled mightily over his last two turns, surrendering 18 runs (17 earned) on 20 hits and two walks across only 6 2/3 innings in losses to Cincinnati and at San Francisco. The former No. 2 overall pick was tagged for eight runs and 11 hits over 3 2/3 innings Tuesday against the Reds, falling to 1-3 with a 12.18 ERA following the break after going 5-2 with a 2.73 ERA before it. Taillon won his only career start versus the Padres last August, tossing three-hit ball over eight scoreless innings.

WALK-OFFS

1. Padres rookie SS Dusty Coleman went 3-for-4 with a two-run home run Saturday and has homered in three of his last five starts.

2. The Pirates are 47-11 in contests in which they score at least four runs but 6-46 in games in which they do not.

3. San Diego LHP Brad Hand worked a scoreless ninth inning Saturday for his sixth straight save conversion and has not allowed a run in a major-league high 21 1/3 consecutive innings.

Another day in a Baltimore Orioles uniform, another home run for Tim Beckham. The red-hot former No. 1 overall pick will try to continue his hot streak and lead the Orioles to a series split when they host the Detroit Tigers in the finale of a four-game series on Sunday.

Beckham homered in each of the last three games and is 13-for-20 with seven extra-base hits in five games since being acquired from Tampa Bay at the July 31 trade deadline. The 27-year-old shortstop belted one of three Baltimore home runs in Saturday's 5-2 win, which lifted the Orioles (54-56) back within two games of .500 and three games behind Kansas City for the second American League wild-card spot. The Tigers are further back at 51-58 and had a four-game winning streak come to an end in Saturday's setback. Beckham is 0-for-2 with a strikeout in his career against Anibal Sanchez, who starts for Detroit on Sunday opposite Baltimore right-hander Ubaldo Jimenez.

Sanchez hs earned the win in three of his last five outings and is coming off a strong performance at the New York Yankees on Tuesday, when he allowed two runs and six hits in 6 2/3 innings. The Venezuela native has worked at least six innings in five of his last seven turns. Sanchez is making his first start at Baltimore since May 14, 2016, when he allowed four runs in six innings and took the loss.

Jimenez is winless in his last four outings but was sharp in the most recent two, yielding a total of three runs while striking out 15 over 13 innings. The 33-year-old did not surrender a home run among five hits against Kansas City on Monday but has given up 23 in 105 2/3 total frames this season. Jimenez started at Detroit on May 17 and took the loss while allowing five runs and eight hits in five innings.

Preview: Marlins at Braves

Gracenote

Aug 6, 2017

Freddie Freeman is the only holdover position player from the last Atlanta Braves team to make the playoffs in 2013, but the first baseman authored a signature moment Saturday for the rebuilding franchise to move them to the brink of a sweep against the visiting Miami Marlins. Freeman launched a three-run homer to cap a five-run inning in a 7-2 victory, and the Braves enter Sunday’s series finale looking to win for the fourth time in their past five games.

Freeman has played in just 65 games this season - missing seven weeks with a fractured wrist - but has reached 20 homers for the fifth time in seven full seasons in the majors. Another slugger continues to pound baseballs in the series, as Miami right fielder Giancarlo Stanton followed his two-homer game in Friday’s series opener with his 36th blast of the season Saturday. The homer moved Stanton within one of his career high and six away from the Marlins’ all-time single season record (Gary Sheffield, 42 in 1996). Miami had won four consecutive series entering the weekend and scored 5.9 runs per game in that stretch, but has scored just five times in the first two games (all driven in by Stanton).

TV: 1:35 p.m. ET, FSN Florida (Miami), FSN South (Atlanta)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Marlins RH Jose Urena (9-5, 3.82 ERA) vs. Braves RH Lucas Sims (0-1, 4.50)

Urena’s ERA has climbed steadily after a great start to the season, finishing July with a 3-2 record and a 4.78 ERA in six starts. He lost Monday against Washington despite surrendering just one run on three hits with six strikeouts in eight innings, snapping a two-start winning streak. Urena has pitched well against the Braves in two starts this season, going 0-1 with a 3.00 ERA while allowing two earned runs in six innings in both appearances.

The 23-year-old Sims impressed in his major-league debut Tuesday against the Los Angeles Dodgers, surrendering three runs on six hits in six innings against baseball’s winningest team. He did not walk a hitter and gave up all six hits on two-strike counts, recording three strikeouts. Sims earned an All-Star nod in the International League this season, going 7-4 for Triple-A Gwinnett with a 3.75 ERA and 132 strikeouts in 115 1/3 innings.

WALK-OFFS

1. Five Marlins - 2B Dee Gordon, OF Marcell Ozuna, OF Christian Yelich, Stanton and C J.T. Realmuto - have recorded 100 hits this season, the first National League team to have five reach triple digits.

2. The Braves traded INF/OF Sean Rodriguez to Pittsburgh for a minor-leaguer, recalled INF/OF Jace Peterson from Triple-A Gwinnett and promoted LHP Max Fried from Double-A Mississippi.

3. Atlanta CF Ender Inciarte matched a season high by extending his hitting streak to 11 games Saturday.

Preview: Blue Jays at Astros

Gracenote

Aug 6, 2017

The Houston Astros became the last American League team to suffer its 40th loss on Saturday and will try not to blow past that mark when they host the Toronto Blue Jays in the rubber match of a three-game series on Sunday. Houston is an AL-best 70-40 but has dropped six of its last eight while attempting to overcome a slew of injuries.

The Astros, who exploded for 16 runs in the series opener on Friday, returned to their offensive struggles on Saturday with a 4-3 loss in 10 innings - the fifth time in the last eight games that they failed to score more than three runs. Houston totaled five hits in Saturday's loss but one of those came from first baseman Tyler White, who homered for the second straight game and is 5-for-9 with three home runs, six RBIs and four runs scored in the two games. The Blue Jays are getting strong offensive production in the series from shortstop Ryan Goins, who homered on Friday and plated the winning run in the 10th on Saturday. Goins will try to stay hot on Sunday against Astros right-hander Mike Fiers, while Toronto right-hander Marcus Stroman tries to retire White and company.

TV: 2:10 p.m. ET, Sportsnet (Toronto), TVA Sports (Toronto), ATT SportsNet - Southwest (Houston)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Blue Jays RH Marcus Stroman (10-5, 3.19 ERA) vs. Astros RH Mike Fiers (7-6, 3.97)

Stroman had a string of three quality starts come to an end with a 4 2/3-inning stint against Oakland on July 27 but bounced back with a win at the Chicago White Sox on Tuesday. The 26-year-old allowed four runs and seven hits in seven frames but received plenty of offensive support in the 8-4 victory. The Duke product had little trouble with the Houston lineup on July 8, when he scattered one run and six hits across seven innings in a win.

Fiers was ripped for six runs on eight hits and three walks in 6 1/3 innings against Tampa Bay on Tuesday to give him a second consecutive setback. The Florida native struck out only two in that outing after punching out at least six in each of his previous six outings. Fiers struck out six over as many innings while going up against Stroman at Toronto on July 8 but surrendered three runs on five hits and four walks to absorb the loss.

WALK-OFFS

1. The Astros placed C/DH Evan Gattis on the seven-day concussion disabled list on Saturday.

2. Toronto designated RHP Mike Bolsinger for assignment and promoted RHP Taylor Cole.

3. Houston OF Josh Reddick hit safely in 10 of the last 11 games.

GAME: Texas Rangers (53-57) at Minnesota Twins (52-56)
DATE/TIME: Sunday, August 06 - 2:10 PM EST
WHERE: Target Field, Minneapolis, Minnesota

Preview: Rangers at Twins

Gracenote

Aug 6, 2017

The Texas Rangers still hold out hope they can surge toward an American League wild-card spot and have a chance to put another team behind them when they visit the Minnesota Twins on Sunday. The Rangers have won three of their last four contests after taking two of the first three in series, capped by Saturday’s 4-1 triumph that pulled them into a virtual tie with Minnesota and four games out of the second wild-card.

Elvis Andrus is playing a big role in the Texas uprising by going 11-for-25 during a six-game hitting streak and Nomar Mazara has hit safely in five straight after belting a two-run homer in the first inning of Saturday’s victory. Nick Martinez will try to rebound from a rough outing when he takes the mound for the Rangers against Minnesota’s promising right-hander Jose Berrios. The Twins have faded seven games behind first-place Cleveland in the AL Central thanks to a 7-13 record since the All-Star break and managed just four hits in Saturday’s setback. Joe Mauer will likely be back in the lineup for Minnesota on Sunday after sitting out one game, but All-Star slugger Miguel Sano is still day-to-day after getting hit on the left hand by a pitch Friday.

TV: 2:10 p.m. ET, FSN Southwest (Texas), FSN North (Minnesota)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rangers RH Nick Martinez (3-4, 5.07 ERA) vs. Twins RH Jose Berrios (9-5, 3.57)

Martinez was pounded for seven runs and eight hits over 5 1/3 innings by Seattle on Tuesday after being recalled to replace the traded Yu Darvish. The 27-year Fordham product went 2-0 while yielding seven runs over 17 1/3 innings in a three-start stretch in June but is winless in three outings since. Sano is 3-for-3 with two homers versus Martinez, who gave up 10 runs (seven earned) in two starts - including four homers - over 10 2/3 innings the last time he faced the Twins in 2015.

Berrios lost each of his last two starts but limited San Diego to one run on two hits over seven innings Monday in a 3-0 loss. The 23-year-old Puerto Rican began the season 7-1 with a 2.67 ERA in his first eight starts but has gone 2-4 with a 4.91 mark in seven outings since. Berrios meets the Rangers for the first time in his career and is 5-1 with a 2.61 ERA at home this season, as opposed to 4-4, 4.38 on the road.

WALK-OFFS

1. Mauer boasts 1,917 career hits with Minnesota and needs one to pass Tony Oliva for third on the Twins’ all-time list.

2. Texas CF Carlos Gomez did not start Saturday but scored a run, and he has hit safely in his last eight starts (9-for-27).

3. Minnesota sent OF Zack Granite to Triple-A Rochester to make room for Saturday’s starter RHP Kyle Gibson.
