Preview: Cubs at Brewers

GAME: Chicago Cubs (56-47) at Milwaukee Brewers (44-61)
DATE/TIME: Sunday, August 02 - 2:10 PM EST
WHERE: Miller Park, Milwaukee, Wisconsin
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

Anthony Rizzo is on a roll and so are the Chicago Cubs, who aim for a four-game sweep at Milwaukee on Sunday. Rizzo has homered in four straight games and the Cubs have won each of those affairs, including a 4-2 triumph on Saturday which also included seven-plus strong innings by Kyle Hendrick.

Rizzo, who was an All-Star this season for the first time, is 8-for-15 with nine RBIs during the power barrage. Rizzo is a career .314 hitter with 13 home runs - more than any other opponent - against Milwaukee, which has scored a total of five runs during a four-game losing streak. The Cubs' surge has them sitting a game behind San Francisco for the second wild card spot in the National League. They will recall veteran lefty Clayton Richard from Triple-A Iowa to start the series finale opposite Kyle Lohse.

TV: 2:10 p.m. ET, ABC 7 (Chicago), FSN Wisconsin (Milwaukee)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Cubs LH Clayton Richard (1-0, 5.40 ERA) vs. Brewers RH Kyle Lohse (5-12, 6.24)

Richard made three starts last month with the Cubs, the last of which saw him allow three runs in 5 2/3 innings of a no-decision at Cincinnati on July 20. Richard, a two-time 14-game winner with San Diego, has gone 5-3 with a 1.70 ERA in the minors this year, the bulk of that coming in the Pittsburgh organization before his contract was purchased by the Cubs on July 3. Richard owns a 6.75 ERA in four career starts at Miller Park.

Lohse has not had a quality start in his last six turns and continues to be plagued by home runs. He served up one more, giving him 24 on the season, while allowing four runs in 6 2/3 innings with zero strikeouts at San Francisco on Monday. The 36-year-old got the win despite allowing four runs in five frames against the Cubs on May 9 and he has a 4.97 ERA in 24 career meetings.

WALK-OFFS

1. Chicago CF Dexter Fowler has reached safely in 16 straight games while batting .345.

2. The Brewers are 12-9 against left-handed starters, compared to 32-52 against righties.

3. Cubs C Miguel Montero (thumb) is expected to begin a rehab assignment with Double-A Tennessee on Sunday.

GAME: Arizona Diamondbacks (50-52) at Houston Astros (59-46)
DATE/TIME: Sunday, August 02 - 2:10 PM EST
WHERE: Minute Maid Park, Houston, Texas
LINE: 127, -138 TOTAL: 8

The Houston Astros attempt to post their fifth consecutive home series win when they take on the Arizona Diamondbacks on Sunday in the rubber match of their three-game interleague set. Houston has won four straight home series since splitting four games with the New York Yankees from June 25-28 and hasn't lost a set at Minute Maid Park since dropping two of three to the Chicago White Sox at the end of May.

The Astros lost the opener of this series before rolling to a 9-2 triumph Saturday as rookie phenom Carlos Correa posted his first career two-homer performance and Hank Conger added a pair of blasts, including a grand slam. Arizona was held to two hits as it had its six-game winning streak come to a halt. Aaron Hill and Jarrod Saltalamacchia each recorded a single as the Diamondbacks fell to 4-1 on their 10-game road trip. Arizona is likely to be without center fielder A.J. Pollock for a second straight game because of tightness behind his left knee.

TV: 2:10 p.m. ET, FSN Arizona, ROOT (Houston)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Diamondbacks LH Robbie Ray (3-5, 2.70 ERA) vs. Astros RH Collin McHugh (12-5, 4.43)

Ray's winless streak reached three starts Monday, when he settled for a no-decision at Seattle after allowing two runs in seven innings. The 23-year-old native of Tennessee has yielded two runs in three of his last four outings but is 1-1 in that span. Ray made his major-league debut against Houston on May 6, 2014 while with Detroit, giving up one run and five hits in 5 1/3 frames en route to victory.

McHugh won his third straight start Tuesday despite surrendering five runs on seven hits and four walks in five innings against the Los Angeles Angels. The 28-year-old Illinois native yielded a total of three runs over 13 frames in his previous two triumphs. McHugh lost his only career start against Arizona on Sept. 21, 2013, when he was tagged for six runs and 11 hits in five innings while with Colorado.

WALK-OFFS

1. Correa has belted 12 home runs in his first 46 major-league games.

2. Houston CF Carlos Gomez went 3-for-5 on Saturday after going hitless in five at-bats in his Astros debut a day earlier.

3. Astros RHP Mike Fiers is expected to make his debut with the team Tuesday against Texas.

Preview: Rockies at Cardinals

GAME: Colorado Rockies (44-58) at St. Louis Cardinals (66-38)
DATE/TIME: Sunday, August 02 - 2:15 PM EST
WHERE: Busch Stadium, St. Louis, Missouri
LINE: 174, -190 TOTAL: 7.5

Although mired in an atrocious stretch on the road, the Colorado Rockies can salvage a split of their four-game series with a win against the host St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday afternoon. The Rockies had dropped 18 of their previous 23 road contests before banging out 11 hits in Saturday's 6-2 victory.

Ben Paulsen homered and drove in three runs and Nolan Arenado also went deep among his two hits as he attempts to work his way out of a 5-for-36 slump. Arenado is just 11-for-48 (.229) against the Cardinals in his career, but 2-for-3 versus Sunday starter Jaime Garcia. While Colorado snapped a three-game skid by posting just its fourth win in its last 20 visits to Busch Stadium, St. Louis suffered its third loss in five contests. Stephen Piscotty, who had two singles Saturday to extend his hitting streak to seven games, is 12-for-32 since being promoted from Triple-A Memphis.

TV: 2:15 p.m. ET, ROOT (Colorado), FSN Midwest (St. Louis)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rockies LH Yohan Flande (1-1, 3.68 ERA) vs. Cardinals LH Jaime Garcia (3-4, 2.00)

Flande made the most of his first start of the season on Tuesday, allowing one run on four hits in five innings to pace Colorado to a 7-2 win over the Chicago Cubs. The 29-year-old Dominican issued three walks after permitting four free passes in his previous seven appearances. Flande has yet to record a decision in two meetings with St. Louis, striking out the lone batter he faced in one outing after getting ripped for four runs on six hits in five innings of the other.

Garcia pitched well in his return from the disabled list on Tuesday, but allowed Joey Votto's three-run homer in the sixth inning en route to a 4-0 loss to Cincinnati. The 29-year-old has struggled mightily versus Colorado, owning an 0-3 mark with a gaudy 10.53 ERA while allowing the Rockies to bat .362 in the process. Garcia was blitzed for five runs on eight hits - including two homers - in the last meeting.

WALK-OFFS

1. St. Louis 3B Matt Carpenter is 7-for-13 with three homers, five RBIs and five runs scored in the series.

2. Colorado 2B DJ LeMahieu continues to swing a hot bat, following up a blistering July (36-for-90, .400) by belting a two-run homer among his two hits on Saturday.

3. Cardinals SS Jhonny Peralta is 5-for-12 with two homers, five RBIs and three runs scored in the series.

GAME: San Francisco Giants (57-46) at Texas Rangers (50-53)
DATE/TIME: Sunday, August 02 - 3:05 PM EST
WHERE: Globe Life Park in Arlington, Arlington, Texas
LINE: -130, 120 TOTAL: 9.5

Mike Leake is in the midst of a hot streak as he makes his San Francisco debut in Sunday's finale of a three-game set against the Texas Rangers. Leake was acquired from Cincinnati for two minor-leaguers and allowed only two runs while winning his last four starts for the Reds.

Leake has given up only 15 hits in 30 innings during the stellar stretch in which he has allowed four hits three times and three hits in the other outing. "He's a quality starter who's going to help us," Giants manager Bruce Bochy told reporters. "He's excited about being here. He's been throwing the ball well, good athlete. That's a great move for us to give us some depth in the rotation." The teams split the first two games of the series with San Francisco winning 9-7 in 11 innings Saturday - receiving two homers from Brandon Belt, a tiebreaking homer in the 11th from Hunter Pence and a solo shot from Buster Posey. The Giants have won 14 of their last 17 games to remain 1 1/2 games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League West, while Texas is four games behind Minnesota for the American League's second wild card.

TV: 3:05 p.m. ET, CSN Bay Area (San Francisco), FSN Southwest (Texas)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Giants RH Mike Leake (9-5, 3.56 ERA) vs. Rangers LH Martin Perez (0-2, 10.50)

Leake is stepping into the rotation spot that belonged to Tim Hudson, who was placed on the disabled list with shoulder soreness. He pitched eight innings of four-hit shutout ball to defeat St. Louis 4-0 in his last outing. Leake received a no-decision against the Rangers in 2013 in his lone career start against them, giving up four runs (one earned) and three hits in seven innings.

Perez was rocked for eight runs and seven hits in one-plus inning during a loss to the New York Yankees in his last turn. He has allowed 22 hits in 12 innings over three starts since returning from Tommy John elbow surgery. Perez has made five career starts in August and has won them all while holding hitters to a .223 average.

WALK-OFFS

1. Rangers DH Prince Fielder had three hits - two were doubles - Saturday after going 4-for-28 over the previous eight contests.

2. Posey was 3-for-5 with two RBIs on Saturday and is batting .459 over his past 15 games.

3. Texas RHP Sam Freeman allowed Belt's second homer on Saturday, entering a streak of 17 straight scoreless appearances.

GAME: Cleveland Indians (48-55) at Oakland Athletics (46-59)
DATE/TIME: Sunday, August 02 - 4:05 PM EST
WHERE: O.co Coliseum, Oakland, California
LINE: 132, -143 TOTAL: 7

Sonny Gray blanked Cleveland three weeks ago and attempts to put together another stellar showing when the Oakland Athletics host the Indians in the finale of a four-game series Sunday. Gray allowed two hits, one walk and struck out six while posting a 2-0 victory over Cleveland on July 12.

Gray has allowed only one run and nine hits in three career starts against the Indians and is 2-0 with a 0.43 ERA. The Athletics are aiming for a split of the series after recording a 5-1 victory Saturday for their second victory in the last nine games. Cleveland had a three-game winning streak halted and has scored only six runs in the series despite emerging victorious the first two games. Jason Kipnis is 1-for-12 in the series and was used as the designated hitter Saturday instead of his usual second base because of shoulder soreness.

TV: 4:05 p.m. ET, STO (Cleveland), CSN California (Oakland)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Indians RH Trevor Bauer (8-8, 4.13 ERA) vs. Athletics RH Sonny Gray (11-4, 2.16)

Bauer has lost three consecutive starts and has given up 13 runs in 19 innings during the span. That includes a strong effort in his last turn when he threw his first career complete game in a loss to Kansas City and allowed two runs and five hits. Bauer, who has never previously faced Oakland, is 5-3 with a 2.47 ERA in nine road starts this season.

Gray tossed his second shutout of the season and fourth of his career when he dominated the Los Angeles Dodgers in his last outing. He struck out nine and gave up three hits and one walk while frustrating the Los Angeles hitters. Gray has 22 strikeouts in 21 innings against Cleveland while holding its hitters to a .129 batting average.

WALK-OFFS

1. Athletics C Stephen Vogt was 0-for-4 on Saturday and is hitless in 23 trips over his last seven contests.

2. Cleveland IF/OF Mike Aviles was hitless in three at-bats Saturday is 0-for-24 over his past eight games.

3. Oakland OF Sam Fuld reached base three times on two hits and a walk Saturday and is 4-for-10 over the last three games.

Preview: Angels at Dodgers

GAME: Los Angeles Angels (55-48) at Los Angeles Dodgers (59-45)
DATE/TIME: Sunday, August 02 - 4:10 PM EST
WHERE: Dodger Stadium, Los Angeles, California
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

Rookie Joc Pederson could return to the starting lineup Sunday as the Los Angeles Dodgers look to complete a three-game sweep of the visiting Los Angeles Angels, who have lost five straight and eight of their last nine. Manager Don Mattingly rested Pederson for the last two games after the outfielder ended July by hitting .169 with one home run and five RBIs.

Dodgers closer Kenley Jansen has been battling a virus but managed to escape trouble in each of the last two games to record back-to-back saves. The Dodgers' bullpen has been a constant source of concern, but new arrivals Jim Johnson and Luis Avilan are expected to play a prominent role in the seventh and eighth innings. The Dodgers have won five in a row against the slumping Angels, who have scored a total of seven runs over their last four games. The Angels traded for outfielders David Murphy, Shane Victorino and David DeJesus in hopes of boosting their offense, but the trio has struggled through the first two games of the Freeway Series.

TV: 4:10 p.m. ET, FSN West (Angels), SportsNet LA (Dodgers)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Angels RH Cory Rasmus (0-0, 0.00 ERA) vs. Dodgers RH Mat Latos (4-7, 4.48)

Rasmus is making a spot start in place of C.J. Wilson, who will have surgery to repair a left elbow impingement and miss the rest of the season. The 27-year-old has missed most of the season due to core muscle surgery but recorded a 2.57 ERA in six starts late last season for the Angels. Rasmus has appeared in 10 games (three starts) for Triple-A Salt Lake and threw a season-high 42 pitches on June 30.

Latos is making his Dodgers debut after being acquired from Miami earlier this week as part of a three-team trade with Atlanta. The 27-year-old is 1-5 with a 3.34 ERA in six career starts at Dodger Stadium as a member of the Padres, Reds and Marlins. Latos, who owns a 2.96 ERA over 45 2/3 innings since returning in mid-June from a knee injury, last faced the Angels on April 3, 2013, as a member of the Reds and yielded three runs over six frames.

WALK-OFFS

1. Dodgers 1B Adrian Gonzalez has hit safely in 11 of his last 13 games since the All-Star break.

2. The Angels are 8-37 when allowing at least four runs.

3. Dodgers C A.J. Ellis (knee) is expected to be activated from the disabled list when eligible on Tuesday.

Preview: Nationals at Mets

GAME: Washington Nationals (54-48) at New York Mets (54-50)
DATE/TIME: Sunday, August 02 - 8:08 PM EST
WHERE: Citi Field, New York City, New York
LINE: 112, -121 TOTAL: 6.5

The New York Mets have a chance to move into a tie for first place in the National League East on Sunday night when they host the division-leading Washington Nationals in the finale of a three-game series. The Mets have recorded a pair of one-run victories and can post their first three-game sweep of Washington since May 25-27, 2009.

Lucas Duda overshadowed the New York debut of newly acquired Yoenis Cespedes (0-for-3) by continuing his power surge with a pair of solo homers and a tiebreaking RBI double following an intentional walk to Cespedes. Duda has eight blasts over his past seven games and took over the major-league lead with a fifth multi-homer game. Shortstop Ian Desmond, who was 5-for-9 in a three-game series against the Mets last month, had a two-run single as the Nationals failed to score more than a pair of runs for the fifth time in six games. Washington right-hander Jordan Zimmermann attempts to prevent a sweep as he opposes New York rookie Noah Syndergaard.

TV: 8:08 p.m. ET, ESPN

PITCHING MATCHUP: Nationals RH Jordan Zimmermann (8-6, 3.36 ERA) vs. Mets RH Noah Syndergaard (5-5, 2.70)

Zimmermann did not factor in the decision after giving up three runs in seven innings versus the Mets on July 22 and was saddled with a loss six days later after he was reached for three runs over six innings at Miami. Zimmermann won his last three starts heading into the All-Star break but is winless over his last three turns. He beat the Mets with six innings of one-run ball in his season debut to improve to 8-5 against them.

Syndergaard was perfect through six innings in his last start and wound up tossing eight scoreless innings of three-hit ball in a 4-0 victory over San Diego. He did not factor in the decision in his previous turn versus Zimmermann and the Nationals despite giving up one run over five innings, a start marred by a season-high five walks. Syndergaard has been superb at home with a 5-1 record and 1.46 ERA in seven starts at Citi Field.

WALK-OFFS

1. Cespedes won the 2013 Home Run Derby at Citi Field, beating Washington's Bryce Harper in the final.

2. Nationals CF Denard Span (back) swung a bat and threw in the outfield for the first time since going on the 15-day disabled list July 10.

3. The Mets sent rookie OF Michael Conforto to Triple-A Las Vegas to clear a roster spot for Cespedes.

Dickey to make rare start on three days' rest

The Toronto Blue Jays will hand the ball to knuckleballer R.A. Dickey against the Kansas City Royals Sunday, giving him his first start on three days' rest since the 2011 season.

Dickey has pitched well of late, allowing three earned runs or fewer in 10 of his previous 11 starts heading into Sunday's finale of a four-game set versus the Royals.

That has not necessarily meant wins for the Blue Jays as the club has gone just 5-6 in those 11 starts, but the Under has been a hot bet in those 11 Dickey starts, going 6-3-2 over that time.

Books are currently offering the Jays in the -128 ball park while the Royals, who are expected to counter with Edinson Volquez, are being offered around +118. The total is down to 8.5 from the opening 9.

Windy conditions in Chicago Sunday

According to forecasts, wind will blow out to leftfield at around 20 miles per hour when the Chicago White Sox host the New York Yankees Sunday afternoon.

Furthermore, there is a 40 percent possibility of thunderstorms during the game.

Ivan Nova is scheduled to pitch for the Yankees while Jeff Samardzija is slated to get the ball for the Pale Hose. Oddsmakers have the Sox priced in the -118 vicinity and the total is 8.5.

Phillies on fire against division opponents

The Philadelphia Phillies have gone 7-0 in their last seven ball games heading into Sunday's series finale against the Atlanta Braves.

The Phils, who have put together a spectacular 12-2 record since the All-Star break, have taken the first three games versus the Braves in their current series, outscoring them 25-6 in the process. The Phils came out of the break with a three-game sweep of the Miami Marlins and took the finale of a three-game series against the Washington Nationals back in late June to build their streak against the NL East.

They'll look to make eight as they go up against Julio Teheran Sunday afternoon. Adam Morgan is probable to start for the Phils.

Sprint Cup heads to Pocono Raceway Sunday
By Freddy Wander

NASCAR Sprint Cup Series
Windows 10 400

Sunday, August 2nd – 1:30 p.m. EDT
Pocono Raceway, Long Pond, PA

The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series continues its season in the second visit to Pocono Raceway in Pennsylvania, with the first being the Axalta “We Paint Winners” 400 back in early June. Last year, Dale Earnhardt Jr. completed the sweep at this track, winning each time despite a very close finish, but he fell off quite a bit in this year’s installment with a finish of 11th. In that race, Martin Truex Jr. continued his fantastic season with a victory in 3:08:22 as his average speed of 127.411 MPH was the slowest in this event since 2009. Last week, six different drivers were able to lead at least five laps at The Brickyard, and despite Kevin Harvick leading the most (75), it was Kyle Busch who started in ninth that took down his fourth win in just his ninth start on the year. Let’s go through the entrants for this week and find a few racers who may be able to take down the checkered flag at this 2.5-mile, triangular course.

Kyle Busch (6/1) – Busch is on too much of a tear right now to not drop some units on him, as he has won in each of the last three events and four of the last five. He has never taken the checkered flag when running at Pocono in 21 attempts, but has two top-eight finishes over his last four attempts; including a runner-up performance in 2011. His average finish here (18.3) is on the poor side compared to his career average in all races (15.1), but there is no one doing better than Busch at the moment and there is no reason why this tremendous run cannot continue in Pennsylvania.

Martin Truex Jr. (7/1) – Truex Jr. is in the midst of a career season at the age of 35 and earlier this year was able to conquer this course and win for just the third time in the Sprint Cup Series. His consistency has been amazing and he has done just as well as anybody in getting into the top-10, doing so in 15-of-20 races (75%) while getting into the top-five a total of six times. All of this success has aided him into a current standing of sixth in the Sprint Cup Series, but he has not excelled in his last four times out, doing no better than 12th in New Hampshire and his finishes have continued to get worse since; ending in a 42nd last week. Truex Jr. still possesses the talents to perform week in and week out and should get back on track where he won earlier in the year.

Denny Hamlin (12/1) – In his 19 visits to Pocono Raceway, Hamlin has earned the checkered flag four times while finishing in the top-10 a total of 13 (68%). He’s been victorious at this specific race twice (2006, 2009), and since his last win owns two other top-10 finishes; including a ninth last year. Hamlin was also solid here earlier this season when he started in eighth and finished in 10th, one of his nine top-10s which also included a victory in the All-Star Race and at Martinsville. His team is running hot at the moment with a finish in the top-five at three of the last four events and he improved his 17th-place start to a fifth at The Brickyard most recently. He tops all racers with his driver rating (108.3), average green flag speed (162.806 MPH) and laps in the top-15 (2,543, 79.3%) at this raceway and will have his sights set at another great showing.

Ryan Newman (70/1) – Newman has quietly been moving up the Sprint Cup Series standings and in the past five weeks went from 16th to 13th thanks to four top-11 performances. None of his poles were stellar during that time, starting no better than 16th, but he really moved up last week when his poor start of 43rd was changed to an 11th by the race’s end. Newman does have a victory here in the past, coming way back in 2003, but he has been on fire at this race in the last four years, doing no worse than eighth in that time. It seems more like Newman is treading water when he is on the course, but 17 career victories don’t lie and it would not be a surprise for this underdog to come out from the shadows and take this one down.

David Ragan (200/1) – Signs have been pointing up for the 29-year-old Ragan, who despite being 25th in the Sprint Cup standings, has been able to rattle off a top-18 finish in three of the last four weeks. Much of his success comes from his strong showings before the race as his pole position has been in the single digits at four of the last five venues. Although they do not come often, Ragan has won on this circuit twice in his career, and if he continues to get to the front of the pack at the start, he is due for a big outing.

Holy $hit betting stat of the day: Phillies unstoppable since All-Star break
By Andrew Avery

The Philadelphia Phillies entered the All-Star break with a 29-62 record, making themselves the laughing stock of the league heading into the midsummer classic. Since then, however, the Phils have gone a ridiculous 12-2 and the only people laughing are bettors who are cashing in on the MLB’s hottest club.

The Phillies have been averaging 5.57 runs scored per game since the All-Star break, while their opponents are averaging just 3.07 runs per game.

The NL East club was pegged as a favorite twice in those dozen wins – July 19 against the Miami Marlins (-141 with Cole Hamels pitching) and in Saturday’s 12-2 thumping of the Atlanta Braves (-116). They have been lofty underdogs in a number of those wins, cashing as +165, +241, +186, +164 and +245 pups to line their backers’ pockets.

With Adam Morgan scheduled to take the bump Sunday afternoon, they have the chance to finish off a four-game sweep of the Atlanta Braves. The Phils have outscored the Braves 25-6 through the first three games including a 9-3 win Friday and the aforementioned victory Saturday. Julio Teheran is scheduled to start for the visiting Braves – who have lost six-straight games and nine of their last 10 heading into Sunday’s meeting.
