Preview: Indians at Blue Jays

Current Conditions - Toronto

P/SUNNY 82 °F
Wind: W 24
5-Day Forecast GAME: Cleveland Indians (49-31) at Toronto Blue Jays (44-39)
DATE/TIME: Sunday, July 03 - 1:07 PM EST
WHERE: Rogers Centre, Toronto, Ontario
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

With their franchise-record 14-game winning streak finally brought to an end, the Cleveland Indians look to wrap up a sensational road trip with another victory at Toronto on Sunday in the finale of a four-game series versus the Blue Jays. Toronto rebounded from Friday's 19-inning loss by swatting three homers in Saturday's 9-6 triumph.

Reigning American League MVP Josh Donaldson has hit safely in 21 of his last 23 games for the Blue Jays after belting a tying home run and delivering a tiebreaking single Saturday. Cleveland left fielder Rajai Davis etched his name into the club's record books, becoming the eighth player in franchise history to hit for the cycle. Corey Kluber already has gone the distance on three occasions this season and the Indians will be looking for him to pitch deep into Sunday's contest to ease the burden on a relief corps that has supplied 16 innings over the past two games. He will be opposed by left-hander J.A. Happ, who is seeking to win his fifth consecutive start.

TV: 1:07 p.m. ET, SportsTime Ohio (Cleveland), Sportsnet, TVAS (Toronto)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Indians RH Corey Kluber (8-7, 3.50 ERA) vs. Blue Jays LH J.A. Happ (10-3, 3.70)

Aside from one clunker, Kluber was overpowering last month while going 4-1 and allowing three hits or fewer in each of his four victories. He went eight strong innings to beat Atlanta last time out, giving up two runs on three hits, after tossing a complete-game shutout versus Tampa Bay in his previous turn. Kluber has made three career starts against the Blue Jays, posting a 1-2 mark and 4.82 ERA.

Happ has only pitched five innings in each of his last two outings and is receiving a huge boost during the winning streak from Toronto's offense, which has poured across 43 runs in his last four turns. The 33-year-old is two wins from matching his career high (Philadelphia, 2009) and owns a 5-1 mark at Rogers Centre despite a 4.50 ERA. Happ needs to be wary of Mike Napoli, who is 6-for-16 against him.

WALK-OFFS

1. Blue Jays 1B-DH Edwin Encarnacion belted a three-run homer Saturday to push his major league-leading RBI total to 73.

2. Indians RHP Danny Salazar and OF Tyler Naquin won monthly honors as the AL's top pitcher and rookie, respectively, in June.

3. Jays RHP Jason Grilli has struck out 21 over 11 innings in his last 11 appearances.

Preview: Tigers at Rays

Current Conditions - St. Petersburg

P/SUNNY 82 °F
Wind: N 5
5-Day Forecast GAME: Detroit Tigers (43-38) at Tampa Bay Rays (33-47)
DATE/TIME: Sunday, July 03 - 1:10 PM EST
WHERE: Tropicana Field, St. Petersburg, Florida
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Detroit Tigers have put themselves squarely in the middle of the race for an American League playoff spot after matching their season high with a five-game winning streak. The Tigers look to extend their run to six in a row and complete a four-game sweep when they visit the slumping Tampa Bay Rays for the series finale on Sunday afternoon.

Detroit rallied for eight runs in the ninth to win the opener, pounded out a 10-2 win on Friday and edged the Rays 3-2 on Saturday to push five games over .500 for the first time as it reached the midpoint of the season at 43-38. Sunday starter Chris Archer will try to avoid the sweep for Tampa Bay, but must rebound from a rough outing against the Tigers on May 22 when he surrendered six runs over three innings. The Rays continue to sink with 15 losses in their last 17 games, managing nine hits combined the past two days. Evan Longoria knocked in a run for Tampa Bay on Saturday and is 10-for-23 in his last six games.

TV: 1:10 p.m. ET, FSN Detroit, FSN Sun (Tampa Bay)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Tigers RH Mike Pelfrey (2-7, 5.02 ERA) vs. Rays RH Chris Archer (4-11, 4.76)

Pelfrey snapped a four-game winless streak despite allowing four runs on 12 hits over 5 1/3 innings against the Miami Marlins last time out. The 32-year-old Wichita State product has permitted 118 hits in 86 innings overall this season and completed more than six innings twice in 16 outings. Longoria is 4-for-8 with a homer against Pelfrey, who is 0-1 with a 5.63 ERA in three starts versus Tampa Bay.

Archer, an All Star last season, owns the most losses in the majors and has dropped four straight since winning at Arizona on June 6. The North Carolina native completed at least six innings in seven consecutive starts, but walked nine in the past three outings. Miguel Cabrera, expected back after resting Saturday, is 4-for-10 with a homer versus Archer --1-2 with a 3.72 ERA in five career games against Detroit.

WALK-OFFS

1. Rays 2B Logan Forsythe has hit safely in eight straight games, going 14-for-34 in that span.

2. Detroit 2B Ian Kinsler belted his 15th homer Saturday – his first since hitting one in three straight games from June 11-13.

3. Tampa Bay RF Steven Souza Jr. went 1-for-3 on Saturday in his first game in almost three weeks after returning from a hip injury.

Preview: Cubs at Mets

Weather information is currently unavailable.
GAME: Chicago Cubs (51-29) at New York Mets (43-37)
DATE/TIME: Sunday, July 03 - 1:10 PM EST
WHERE: Citi Field, New York City, New York
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The New York Mets had no trouble tearing through the Chicago Cubs in the National League Championship Series last October and still seem to have the upper hand in the series. The Mets will try to pull off a four-game sweep of the NL Central leaders when they host the series finale on Sunday.

New York, which lost all seven meetings with the Cubs in the 2015 regular season before sweeping Chicago in four games during the playoffs, dropped four in a row to finish off a 2-5 road trip before returning home on Thursday to face the Cubs. The Mets are following the same formula from the postseason in the current series by getting strong starting pitching and seven home runs in the three contests. The Cubs remain the class of the NL but are getting a strong push from the San Francisco Giants for that mantle and have dropped nine of their last 13. Ace Jake Arrieta suffered his first road loss since the NLCS and his first in the regular season since May 7, 2015, when Chicago fell 4-3 on Saturday.

TV: 1:10 p.m. ET, WGN (Chicago), SNY (New York)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Cubs LH Jon Lester (9-3, 2.03 ERA) vs. Mets RH Noah Syndergaard (8-3, 2.49)

Lester posted his seventh straight quality start by holding the Cincinnati Reds to one run and three hits in 7 2/3 innings on Tuesday but was held out of the decision. The Washington native has battled some command issues with four home runs allowed and seven walks in his last three turns. Lester is 2-0 with a 2.50 ERA in three career regular-season starts against the Mets but lost at New York in the NLCS.

Syndergaard finally confirmed reports that he is pitching with a bone spur in his right elbow this week and is coming off his worst start of the season. The 23-year-old Texan was ripped for five runs on seven hits and three walks over three innings at Washington on Monday. Syndergaard lost in his major-league debut at Chicago last season but struck out nine in 5 2/3 innings to earn a win in the postseason.

WALK-OFFS

1. Cubs OF Chris Coghlan left Saturday’s game with soreness in his rib cage and is day-to-day.

2. Mets C Travis d’Arnaud is 5-for-9 in the series.

3. Chicago will use a six-man rotation until the All-Star break, with RHP Adam Warren scheduled to make a spot start on Wednesday.

Preview: Angels at Red Sox

Current Conditions - Boston

L/RAIN 64 °F
Wind: SSW 15
5-Day Forecast GAME: Los Angeles Angels (33-48) at Boston Red Sox (43-37)
DATE/TIME: Sunday, July 03 - 1:35 PM EST
WHERE: Fenway Park, Boston, Massachusetts
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

If the Boston Red Sox pitching staff hasn’t yet hit rock bottom, then the ground is rapidly approaching. The Red Sox will try to coax a decent effort out of another pitcher when Sean O’Sullivan is recalled to start the finale of a three-game series against the visiting Los Angeles Angels.

The Boston staff presided over a 21-2 loss to the Angels on Saturday, marking the 13th time in the last 103 years that the team has given up at least 20 runs in a game. "We're embarrassed by tonight's ballgame,” Red Sox manager John Farrell, who has had to fight off rumors about his job security in recent days, told reporters after the loss. “There's no other way to put it." The biggest problem for the Boston pitchers in the current series is Angels first baseman C.J. Cron, who followed up a grand slam on Friday by going 6-for-6 with two home runs, five RBIs and five runs scored in Saturday’s demolition. The win was just the second in the last 12 games for Los Angeles, which also received a 5-for-6, six-RBI effort from catcher Carlos Perez.

TV: 1:35 p.m. ET, FSN West (Los Angeles), NESN (Boston)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Angels RH Matt Shoemaker (3-8, 4.12 ERA) vs. Red Sox RH Sean O’Sullivan (1-0, 7.94)

Shoemaker has earned a quality start in seven of his last eight outings but posted only one win in that span – 8 1/3 strong innings against Houston on May 27. The 29-year-old is 0-1 over his last four outings despite a 1.32 ERA and was held out of the decision on Monday after holding the Astros scoreless over six frames. Shoemaker has yet to allow a run versus the Red Sox in his career and yielded one hit in his two appearances (one start) spanning 10 2/3 total innings against them.

O’Sullivan made two starts and one relief appearance for the Red Sox in May and was ripped for 10 runs and 17 hits over 10 1/3 innings in the two starts. The California native made his major-league debut for the Angels in 2009 after being drafted by the franchise in the third round of the 2005 draft. Sullivan is 6-2 with a 2.79 ERA in 11 starts for Triple-A Pawtucket.

WALK-OFFS

1. Angels CF Mike Trout recorded two hits in Saturday’s rout and has multiple hits in eight of the last nine games.

2. Red Sox CF Mookie Betts is 6-for-10 with four extra-base hits in the first two games of the series.

3. Los Angeles 3B Yunel Escobar (knee) returned from a seven-game absence on Saturday and went 1-for-4 with a walk out of the leadoff spot.

Current Conditions - Philadelphia

SUNNY 87 °F
Wind: WSW 14
5-Day Forecast GAME: Kansas City Royals (43-37) at Philadelphia Phillies (36-46)
DATE/TIME: Sunday, July 03 - 1:35 PM EST
WHERE: Citizens Bank Park, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

Kansas City Royals manager Ned Yost was committed to keeping designated hitter Kendrys Morales in the lineup when the team played a string of games in National League parks. The move has paid off in a big way, and the Royals will likely lean on Morales' hot bat when they play the rubber match of a three-game set in Philadelphia against the Phillies on Sunday.

Morales slugged two home runs and drove in four during Saturday's 6-2 win to even the series at a game apiece, and the veteran switch-hitter is 9-for-15 with four homers through the first four games (3-1) of the road trip through St. Louis and Philadelphia. Morales has also made Yost look good through some capable play on the field, calling his usual designated hitter "a real pleasant surprise" in right field. The winning formula will be put to the test against Phillies right-hander Vince Velasquez, who made a triumphant return from the disabled list in his last time out with five scoreless innings and a win at Arizona. Center fielder Peter Bourjos has been the hot hand for Philadelphia, as he is batting .455 during his 11-game hitting streak.

TV: 1:35 p.m. ET, FSN Kansas City, CSN Philadelphia

PITCHING MATCHUP: Yordano Ventura (6-5, 5.00 ERA) vs. Phillies RH Vince Velasquez (6-2, 3.38)

Ventura followed up a pair of gems with a rocky outing Tuesday against St. Louis, giving up seven runs in 5 1/3 innings. The 25-year-old is 2-1 with a 3.67 ERA in four day starts and has recorded 29 strikeouts against six walks in his past six appearances overall. Ventura, who has a 4.17 ERA in 10 interleague starts, has never faced the Phillies.

Velasquez struck out seven and did not issue a walk in his solid showing Monday against the Diamondbacks. Three of his five home outings (excluding his injury-shortened outing on June 8) have also resulted in a scoreless line and he has a 1.24 ERA at Citizens Bank Park. Morales has a homer and a single in four at-bats against the 24-year-old, who gave up four runs and struck out seven in 6 1/3 innings as a member of the Houston Astros in his only career start against the Royals last year.

WALK-OFFS

1. Royals SS Alcides Escobar is batting .379 during a 13-game hitting streak.

2. Philadelphia 3B Maikel Franco has four two-hit efforts in his last five contests.

3. Phillies 1B Tommy Joseph is 0-for-15 with six strikeouts in his last four games.

Preview: Reds at Nationals

Current Conditions - Washington

M/CLOUDY 90 °F
Wind: SW 15
5-Day Forecast
GAME: Cincinnati Reds (30-52) at Washington Nationals (49-33)
DATE/TIME: Sunday, July 03 - 1:35 PM EST
WHERE: Nationals Park, Washington, District of Columbia
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Cincinnati Reds have been let down by their league-worst bullpen all season but are getting exemplary work out of the relief crew this weekend. The Reds will try to get enough innings out of starter John Lamb to give the bullpen a well-deserved rest and earn a split when they visit the Washington Nationals in the finale of a four-game series on Sunday.

Three Cincinnati relievers combined to allow one run over seven frames in a 3-2 loss in 14 innings on Friday, and three different relievers outdueled the Washington bullpen in a 9-4 victory in 10 frames on Saturday. The win snapped a five-game slide and marked the third time in five contests that the Reds had to work overtime into extra innings. The Nationals had a six-game winning streak come to an end with the setback as left-hander Sammy Solis and righty - and former Red - Matt Belisle struggled to keep the game close. Solis was working a tie game in the ninth inning with closer Jonathan Papelbon (intercostal strain) unavailable, and the veteran closer is inching closer to a return after making his second rehab appearance at Double-A Harrisburg on Saturday.

TV: 1:35 p.m. ET, FSN Ohio (Cincinnati), MASN (Washington), WUSA 9 (Washington)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Reds LH John Lamb (1-4, 4.60 ERA) vs. Nationals RH Stephen Strasburg (10-0, 2.90)

Lamb posted a quality start and snapped a string of three straight outings failing to get through six innings when he held the Chicago Cubs to two runs and six hits in six frames on Tuesday. The California native struck out seven in that outing and is boosting his strikeout rate with 19 in 16 2/3 innings over his last three turns. Lamb is getting his first look at Washington and is 1-2 with a 6.75 ERA on the road.

Nationals manager Dusty Baker is calling Strasburg (ribs, back) a game-time decision for Sunday, with rookie sensation Lucas Giolito a possibility if Strasburg were to get scratched. Strasburg, who has been out since holding the Cubs to one run in seven innings on June 15, came through a bullpen session Thursday without any issues. The San Diego native had some trouble at Cincinnati on June 4, allowing three runs on four hits – two home runs – in 5 1/3 innings without factoring in the decision.

Current Conditions - Minneapolis

CLOUDS AND SUN 88 °F
Wind: CLM 0
5-Day Forecast GAME: Texas Rangers (52-30) at Minnesota Twins (26-54)
DATE/TIME: Sunday, July 03 - 2:10 PM EST
WHERE: Target Field, Minneapolis, Minnesota
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

Cole Hamels is in the midst of a dominating stretch and looks to keep the Texas Rangers from losing their first series since mid-May in Sunday's rubber match of a three-game set at the Minnesota Twins. Hamels not only has won four straight starts, but he hasn't lost away from home during the regular season in nearly 11 months.

What appeared to be a gimme on paper for Hamels against the worst team in the majors took on a different light after the Twins mauled the Rangers 17-5 on Saturday. Max Kepler set a franchise rookie record with seven RBIs after belting a pair of three-run homers, including the first of his career off a left-hander. Texas, which owns the best record in the American League, has dropped three of its last four contests to fall to 3-3 on its 10-game road trip. Kyle Gibson, coming off his first victory of the year, will take the mound for Minnesota in the series finale.

TV: 2:10 p.m. ET, FSN Southwest (Texas), FSN North (Minnesota)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rangers LH Cole Hamels (9-1, 2.60 ERA) vs. Twins RH Kyle Gibson (1-5, 5.12)

Hamels capped an unbeaten month of June with a dominant effort against the New York Yankees on Tuesday, tossing seven scoreless innings of six-hit ball. The 32-year-old has put up stellar numbers during the four-game winning streak, permitting two runs and 18 hits over 27 2/3 innings. He has been spectacular away from home this season, posting a 6-0 mark and 1.44 ERA to remain unbeaten on the road since Aug. 7, 2015.

Gibson finally broke into the win column in his eighth start, striking out a season-high seven batters and blanking the Chicago White Sox on five hits over seven innings. The 28-year-old had done little to inspire any confidence in three starts since spending seven weeks on the disabled list, giving up 13 runs and 21 hits over 18 innings. Gibson has fared well against Texas with a 1-0 mark and 1.80 ERA in three starts.

WALK-OFFS

1. Twins 3B Eduardo Nunez is 12-for-28 over his last six contests following his fourth four-hit game of the season Saturday.

2. Rangers OF Shin-Soo Choo has smacked four of his five home runs in the last 10 games.

3. Twins SS Eduardo Escobar exited Saturday's game with a hamstring injury and will be re-evaluated Sunday.

Current Conditions - Houston

CLOUDY 93 °F

5-Day Forecast GAME: Chicago White Sox (41-40) at Houston Astros (43-38)
DATE/TIME: Sunday, July 03 - 2:10 PM EST
WHERE: Minute Maid Park, Houston, Texas
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Houston Astros will be seeking their sixth consecutive series victory when they host the Chicago White Sox on Sunday afternoon in the rubber match of a three-game set. Chicago rallied for a 7-6 victory Saturday to halt the Astros' four-game winning streak and hand them only their second loss in 13 contests.

White Sox center fielder J.B. Shuck homered and tripled in Saturday's win to improve to 10-for-25 with three blasts over the past seven games. Shuck's homer was the 15th in a row of the solo variety for Chicago, tying a franchise record set in September of 1965. Astros second baseman Jose Altuve, named the American League Player of the Month for June after batting .420 in the month, went 2-for-3 with a homer and three RBIs Saturday -- his fifth multi-hit game in the last seven. A pair of pitchers who have a combined one win in their last 18 starts square off Sunday when Houston's Collin McHugh opposes White Sox left-hander Jose Quintana.

TV: 2:10 p.m. ET, WGN (Chicago), ROOT (Houston)

PITCHING MATCHUP: White Sox LH José Quintana (5-8, 3.18 ERA) vs. Astros RH Collin McHugh (5-5, 4.58)

Quintana's winless drought reached nine starts when he surrendered four runs on six hits over seven innings in a 4-0 loss to Minnesota on Tuesday. It marked the fourth time during a 0-7 rut that he's permitted at least four runs and continued a troubling trend that has seen him surrender six homers in his last four starts. Quintana has made six career starts against the Astros, going 2-1 with a 2.78 ERA.

McHugh is in a dry spell of his own with one victory over his last nine starts, although he's deserved a better fate during a string of three consecutive no-decisions. The 29-year-old allowed two runs over six innings versus the Los Angeles Angels last time out and has yielded a total of five runs over his last three outings -- all quality starts. He fell to 0-2 versus Chicago despite seven innings of two-run ball on May 19.

WALK-OFFS

1. White Sox DH Dioner Navarro collected four RBIs Saturday and notched his second triple of the season -- matching his career high.

2. Astros SS Carlos Correa has knocked in nine runs during a five-game RBI streak.

3. White Sox CF Adam Eaton had two hits Saturday after going 1-for-17 in his previous five games.

DATE/TIME: Sunday, July 03 - 4:05 PM EST
WHERE: Oakland Coliseum, Oakland, California
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Pittsburgh Pirates aim to complete a sweep when they visit the Oakland Athletics on Sunday for the finale of their three-game interleague series. Pittsburgh improved to 3-1 on their nine-game road trip Saturday as it overcame an early two-run deficit and pulled out a 4-2 triumph in 12 innings for its third straight triumph.

David Freese delivered the tiebreaking single for the Pirates, who have outscored the opposition 19-6 during their winning streak. Oakland has dropped three in a row after a stretch during which it won six of seven. Coco Crisp returned to the lineup Saturday after receiving a day off and doubled to extend his hitting streak to nine games. Marcus Semien went 0-for-4 on Saturday, marking only the second time in 10 contests he failed to record a hit.

TV: 4:05 p.m. ET, ROOT (Pittsburgh), CSN California (Oakland)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Pirates LH Francisco Liriano (4-8, 5.33 ERA) vs. Athletics RH Daniel Mengden (1-3, 2.81)

Liriano is looking to halt a losing streak that reached five games on Monday, when he yielded five runs - four earned - on four hits and five walks in 4 1/3 innings against the Los Angeles Dodgers. The 32-year-old Dominican has not won since defeating Arizona on May 24 - the last time he gave up fewer than four runs. Liriano has had mixed results against Oakland in his career, going 4-4 with a 4.14 ERA in 15 meetings (13 starts).

Mengden is coming off his first career victory, an 8-3 triumph at San Francisco in which he gave up two runs and four hits in 7 2/3 innings. It marked the first time in four outings the 23-year-old Texan did not serve up a home run. Mengden, who will be facing Pittsburgh for the first time, has yielded three runs or fewer in each of his four major-league starts.

WALK-OFFS

1. The Athletics are likely to place C Josh Phegley (knee) on the disabled list.

2. Pirates OF Matt Joyce is hitting .320 over his last 11 contests.

3. Oakland agreed to terms with Cuban star OF Lazaro Armenteros on Saturday.

Current Conditions - Phoenix

SUNNY 90 °F
Wind: N 5
5-Day Forecast GAME: San Francisco Giants (51-32) at Arizona Diamondbacks (37-46)
DATE/TIME: Sunday, July 03 - 4:10 PM EST
WHERE: Chase Field, Phoenix, Arizona
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

Both the San Francisco Giants and Arizona Diamondbacks have proven to be rude guests to one another recently, as the visiting team had won nine straight in this series until the Diamondbacks ended the run with a comeback victory on Saturday. Arizona will attempt to become the first of the two National League West rivals to win a home series against the other on Sunday, when it hosts the division-leading Giants.

The Diamondbacks used a three-run blast in the eighth inning by Welington Castillo to cap a five-run rally in Saturday's 6-5 triumph and halted a stretch in which the road team had claimed 25 of the previous 30 meetings. The win not only ended Arizona's six-game losing streak overall but also was a much-needed shot in the arm for a club that owns the second-worst home record in the majors at 14-29. The loss was equally rare for San Francisco, which had won 23 of its previous 31 away from home and still owns the best road mark in the majors at 27-16. The Giants (51-32) also missed out on their chance to move ahead of the NL-best Chicago Cubs (51-29) in the win column and tie the Texas Rangers (52-30) for the most victories in the majors.

TV: 4:10 p.m. ET, CSN Bay Area (San Francisco), FSN Arizona

PITCHING MATCHUP: Giants RH Albert Suarez (3-1, 3.83 ERA) vs. Diamondbacks LH Robbie Ray (4-7, 4.69)

Suarez continued to pitch decently in place of the injured Matt Cain on Tuesday, settling for a no-decision against Oakland after yielding three runs on three hits and three walks over 5 2/3 innings. The 26-year-old has turned in remarkably similar outings in each of his five starts this season, lasting between 4 2/3 and 6 1/3 frames while giving up three runs each time. Suarez has yet to face Arizona, but he has struggled much more on the road (1-1, 5.03 ERA) than at home (2-0, 2.78).

Ray pitched through a blood blister Monday versus Philadelphia and took the loss after surrendering four runs and nine hits while fanning seven over six innings. The native of Tennessee did not issue a free pass for the first time all season and recorded at least six strikeouts for the seventh straight turn, yet he fell to 2-4 with a 5.91 ERA at home. Ray notched his first win of 2016 on April 19 at San Francisco, however, striking out eight across six scoreless innings.

WALK-OFFS

1. Giants 3B Conor Gillaspie, who sat out Saturday's loss after falling a homer short of the cycle a day earlier, is batting .447 over his last 13 games.

2. Arizona 3B Jake Lamb needs one more double and two more homers over the next week to become the fourth player in team history with at least 20 of each before the All-Star break.

3. Even with Saturday's setback, San Francisco has won 15 of its last 18 NL West contests.

Current Conditions - Seattle

M/CLOUDY 58 °F

5-Day Forecast GAME: Baltimore Orioles (47-33) at Seattle Mariners (42-39)
DATE/TIME: Sunday, July 03 - 4:10 PM EST
WHERE: Safeco Field, Seattle, Washington
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Baltimore Orioles are the most potent home-run hitting team in the majors, but they have been easily outclassed in that regard during their battles with the Seattle Mariners this year. The Mariners hope to continue flexing their muscles and complete a four-game home sweep of the Orioles on Sunday as the clubs wrap up their season series.

Seattle has homered in every game while outscoring the American League East leaders 41-18 and clubbing 14 home runs to Baltimore's five to take five of the six meetings. Seth Smith left the yard for the third time in as many games and Mike Zunino belted two of his own in his season debut as the Mariners matched the Orioles' season homer tally against them in Saturday's 12-6 victory. Baltimore belted a major league-record 56 home runs in June and has hit exactly one in each game of this series to increase its total to 127 - five more than second-place Seattle - but will have revenge on its mind as it tries to avoid a sweep in the finale. The Orioles will square off against Hisashi Iwakuma for the first time since Aug. 12, when the 35-year-old joined Hideo Nomo as the only Japanese pitchers to throw a no-hitter in major-league history.

TV: 4:10 p.m. ET, MASN2 (Baltimore), ROOT (Seattle)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Orioles RH Ubaldo Jimenez (5-7, 6.63 ERA) vs. Mariners RH Hisashi Iwakuma (7-6, 4.34)

Jimenez closed out June with a pair of victories over San Diego, including a road triumph on Tuesday in which he allowed one run on three hits and four walks in five frames. The 32-year-old Dominican, who finished 3-1 last month despite a 7.23 ERA, had been charged with at least five runs in seven of his previous eight outings before facing the Padres. One of those poor starts came in a loss to Seattle on May 17, when Jimenez was tagged for six runs across 4 1/3 innings.

Iwakuma won for the third time in four tries and sixth time in eight starts overall with a victory Tuesday against Pittsburgh, yielding two runs in 6 2/3 innings after having permitted nine runs over his previous 11 2/3 frames. The outing marked the first time in 10 turns the Tokyo native gave up fewer than three runs and only the second time in his last nine trips to the mound he did not surrender at least one home run. Iwakuma is 1-2 with a 2.51 ERA in four career starts against the Orioles.

WALK-OFFS

1. Smith is batting .375 with three home runs and eight RBIs in six games against Baltimore and .268 with six homers and 26 RBIs in 64 contests against every other opponent this season.

2. Orioles 1B Chris Davis has homered in each of his last two contests to run his career total to 182 - tied with Ken Singleton for eighth in team history.

3. Seattle has swatted 64 of its 122 homers at Safeco Field, trailing only Baltimore's 68 home runs at Camden Yards for the most by a club in its home park this season.

5-Day Forecast GAME: Colorado Rockies (37-43) at Los Angeles Dodgers (46-37)
DATE/TIME: Sunday, July 03 - 4:10 PM EST
WHERE: Dodger Stadium, Los Angeles, California
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Los Angeles Dodgers attempt to complete a sweep when they host the Colorado Rockies on Sunday for the finale of their three-game series. Los Angeles hopes to continue to receive strong pitching performances as it has allowed one run in the first two games of the set and a total of two over its last three overall contests.

Corey Seager continues to swing a hot bat as he is riding a 15-game hitting streak during which he has gone 25-for-61 (.410). Colorado will need more offense if it plans to avoid a fifth consecutive loss as it recorded only five hits in Saturday's setback. DJ LeMahieu returned to the starting lineup and went 2-for-4 after making just one pinch-hitting appearance since last Sunday due to a bruised left knee. The Rockies still are awaiting the return of rookie Trevor Story, who has yet to get back in the lineup from a bruised right middle finger.

TV: 4:10 p.m. ET, ROOT (Colorado), SportsNet LA (Los Angeles)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rockies RH Jon Gray (5-3, 4.83 ERA) vs. Dodgers RH Brandon McCarthy (2015: 3-0, 5.87)

Gray allowed four runs for the second straight outing on Monday but came away with the win against Toronto as he gave up five hits (two homers) and struck out eight without issuing a walk. The 24-year-old native of Oklahoma has served up a total of nine home runs over his last seven starts after surrendering two in his first six turns this year. Gray escaped with a no-decision against the Dodgers in his season debut on April 22, when he gave up five runs and seven hits in five frames.

McCarthy will be making his first major-league appearance since April 25, 2015 due to Tommy John surgery. The 32-year-old Californian made four starts in the minors this year in preparation for his return, going 0-1 with a 4.61 ERA. Prior to injuring his elbow, McCarthy won three of his four starts for Los Angeles despite posting a 5.87 ERA.

WALK-OFFS

1. Seager was named the National League Rookie of the Month for June on Saturday after hitting .343 with eight doubles and eight homers.

2. Colorado designated Yohan Flande for assignment and activated fellow LHP Jake McGee, who gave up two runs - one earned - on one hit and one walk while recording just one out on Saturday.

3. Los Angeles RF Yasiel Puig started and went 1-for-3 with an RBI after exiting Friday's contest with a left shoulder injury.

Preview: Yankees at Padres

Current Conditions - San Diego

CLOUDY 66 °F
Wind: SW 12
5-Day Forecast GAME: New York Yankees (39-41) at San Diego Padres (35-46)
DATE/TIME: Sunday, July 03 - 4:40 PM EST
WHERE: Petco Park, San Diego, California
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The New York Yankees have provided plenty of late-game magic recently, but they've been on the wrong end of things in San Diego this weekend. The Yankees will try to salvage the finale of the three-game interleague series when the teams meet on Sunday afternoon, hours after Melvin Upton Jr.'s walk-off homer lifted the Padres to a 2-1 win.

The triumph came a day after San Diego survived a furious rally in the ninth inning by New York for another one-run win - part of an 8-4 surge for the Padres. The offensively challenged Yankees have been hampered by the continued absence of Carlos Beltran (hamstring), who has been limited to one at-bat off the bench in the series and is not expected to return to the lineup until Monday in Chicago. Andrew Cashner (neck) is coming off the disabled list to make his first start for the Padres since June 10, when he faced just one batter in an outing at Colorado. He will be opposed by Yankees rookie Chad Green, who is being brought up to make a spot start while allowing veteran CC Sabathia to get an extra day of rest and avoid having to bat in an NL park.

TV: 4:40 p.m. ET, YES (New York), FSN San Diego

PITCHING MATCHUP: Yankees RH Chad Green (0-1, 7.20 ERA) vs. Padres RH Andrew Cashner (3-5, 4.75)

Green gave up four earned runs over four innings in his first career start at Arizona on May 16 and then appeared in one frame out of the bullpen last month in a return trip to the majors. Meanwhile, he went 6-6 with a 1.54 ERA in 14 starts for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. The 25-year-old, who was acquired from Detroit in December, was 2-1 with a 1.35 ERA and 26 strikeouts in 20 innings over his final three minor-league starts.

Cashner allowed exactly three earned runs in six consecutive starts prior to the injury, although he completed six innings in just three of those outings. He has the worst strikeout rate (6.1 per nine innings) of his seven-year career and his highest walk rate (3.7) since 2012. The former first-round pick allowed two runs in seven innings to defeat the Yankees in his only previous encounter.

WALK-OFFS

1. Upton has scored eight runs in his last eight games and hit four homers in that span.

2. Miller has allowed five home runs in 35 2/3 innings after giving up five in 61 2/3 frames last season.

3. Yankees SS Didi Gregorius is 10-for-25 with five walks during his six-game hitting streak.

Preview: Marlins at Braves

Weather information is currently unavailable.
GAME: Miami Marlins (42-39) at Atlanta Braves (28-53)
DATE/TIME: Sunday, July 03 - 8:05 PM EST
WHERE: Fort Bragg, Fort Bragg, North Carolina
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

Regardless of the results of Sunday’s series finale between the Miami Marlins and Atlanta Braves, the contest will be an unforgettable experience as the two teams meet at Fort Bragg, N.C. for the first major-league regular-season game played on an active U.S. military base. The contest will be held at Fort Bragg Field, constructed in four months on an old golf course with a seating capacity of 12,500.

The military personnel who fill those seats will see Atlanta attempt to win the series, after the Braves won for the 10th time in 17 games in Saturday’s 9-1 rout at home. Braves first baseman Freddie Freeman blasted a two-run homer among his three hits Saturday and is one of the hottest hitters in baseball, batting .394 with five homers, 15 RBIs and 13 runs scored in his past 24 games. Miami outfielder Ichiro Suzuki collected a RBI triple Saturday and needs 11 hits to reach 3,000 for his career, getting a start for the slumping Giancarlo Stanton. The three-time All-Star is hitting a career-worst .218, striking out five times in his past seven at-bats.

TV: 8:05 p.m. ET, ESPN

PITCHING MATCHUP: Marlins LH Adam Conley (4-5, 3.90 ERA) vs. Braves RH Matt Wisler (3-7, 4.14)

Conley has battled inconsistency through his second season, and his last four starts illustrate his up-and-down 2016. He gave up five runs in 4 1/3 innings to lose Tuesday to the Detroit Tigers and was rocked for 11 hits in a June 12 defeat at Arizona, but in between held the Braves to four hits in eight shutout innings and limited Colorado to one run in 5 2/3 frames. Conley is 1-0 with a 1.46 ERA in two starts against the Braves this season.

Wisler has struggled early in games his past two starts, only to make adjustments that allowed him to last 6 2/3 and six innings in no decisions against the New York Mets and Cleveland. He opened June by giving up 13 runs total in a pair of losses during four-inning stints against the Los Angeles Dodgers and Chicago Cubs before rebounding to limit Cincinnati to two runs in a June 16 victory. Wisler’s lone appearance against Miami this season was a one-inning relief stint April 17, resulting in his first career save.

WALK-OFFS

1. Miami 1B Justin Bour, who is hitting .342 with eight homers in 23 career games against the Braves, left Saturday’s game with a sprained right ankle and is day-to-day.

2. Atlanta CF Ender Inciarte (groin) did not play Saturday after leaving Friday’s game and Braves manager Brian Snitker told reporters he expects him to be available Sunday.

3. Braves 2B Jace Peterson extended his career-best hitting streak to 13 games with a 2-for-4 performance Saturday, including a three-run homer in Atlanta’s seven-run sixth inning.
