Balmoral: Sunday 6/21 Analysis
By Jeremey Day

DRF HARNESS

Race 7 - $25,000 Guaranteed Pick Four Pool

Best Bet (24 - 38 / $89.60): CHAR N MARG (5th)

Spot Play: LEXINGTON LADY (4th)

Race 1

In a field of first time 2-year-old starters, (2) PRINCE SIMBA put in a nice-looking professional qualifier first time out. (3) WRIGHTWOOD trotting colt gets sent out for proven connections and is likely the horse to beat if he minds his manners. (7) TODGER gelding kicked home nicely in his most recent qualifier and looks to have some ability.

Race 2

(7) REAL SHEILA elected to not move in the mile last out a few weeks ago as the favorite. The 3-year-old gets sent out for a hot barn and could be ready for a good effort. (2) FOXY ELLIE raced well last out just missing; threat. (6) H-AND-N- LETSRACE filly makes her third start back off a layoff and has room to improve in a field full of question marks.

Race 3

(3) ABC BIG SHOT gelding should offer value with a low percentage pilot coming off a really nice qualifier. (5) LOVE YOU FOREVER just missed last out racing gamely. The well bred trotter looks to have more to offer. (2) CHARMING MACIE is prone to breaking issues, however the trotter has shown a good burst of speed when timed right.

Race 4

(7) LEXINGTON LADY was the best by far last out being used twice just missing at the wire. If the 2-year-old improves off that effort she's the horse to beat. (2) FOX VALLEY ADDISON filly didn't miss by much last out and has upside. (1) FOX VALLEYTIRAMISU got the victory last out even after racing greenly. The filly gets the best post and will be firing early.

Race 5

(2) CHAR N MARG filly makes her second start of her career off a big first effort kicking home nicely. (5) FOX VALLEY GYPSY looks to own some ability but could use a smooth trip from a provisional pilot. (7) FOX VALLEY BAILEY has room to improve against lightly raced 2-year-olds.

Race 6

(2) FOX VALLEY YOKO sat the rail against older last out before showing a good burst late. (3) BI POLAR ROSE made a break last out leaving for position. The 3-year-old has beat this group in two straight. (4) PERSUASIVE LOOK filly trotter owns a win over the group as well and does her best work late.

Race 7

(6) WESTERN BOUDOIR mare makes her second start for a new barn and had some sneaky late pace last out. (2) MISS PAT WEISAR has been competitive at this level but needs a smooth trip; threat. (7) THEDAYYOUHAVEMADE mare is 0 for the year but has been knocking on the door in recent; use underneath.

Race 8

(2) SOUTHERN APPEAL three-year-old has a ton of upside and is the horse to beat if he stays trotting. (1) MAGIC BABE filly comes into the race off an impressive win but will likely need more. (5) AMAZED owns good gate speed but has lacked pop late.

Race 9

(6) BELL VALLEY BILL dominated this level last out and was the driver's choice. (4) WESTERN DEAL needed his last start and should be sharper second start off the layoff. (3) HOLY MCMOSES pacer has two wins in his last seventy-five starts; use underneath.

Race 10

(4) AUDREY ANNA lightly raced pacer looks to be getting better with every start and gets a post edge on her main rivals. (10) WINDOW WIPER has been super sharp at this track and is a threat with a fast pace to close into. (7) MR LELAND'S FILLY still has a lot of upside and ability but has not came back to her freshman form; command a price.

MLB betting cheat sheet: Morton making it look easy for surging Pirates
By DOC'S SPORTS

Here's a comprehensive look at betting notes for this weekend’s major-league schedule:

Charlie in charge

The Pittsburgh Pirates are a perfect 5-0 in Charlie Morton’s five starts this season. He has turned in two consecutive performances without giving up a single run across a total of 14.1 innings against the Milwaukee Brewers and Chicago Cubs. Morton (5-0, 1.62 ERA) will get the nod on Sunday at the Washington Nationals for the Pirates, who have won seven games in a row.

The silence of the bats

The Chicago White Sox have lost six straight games and have scored a grand total of three runs in their last four. Shortstop Alexei Ramirez is batting .190 in his last six games and right fielder Avisail Garcia is 2-for-25 in his seven most recent contests.

Which Teheran?

Julio Teheran’s ERA is a bloated 5.07 ERA after he gave up six runs in 6.1 innings during the Atlanta Braves’ Tuesday loss at the Boston Red Sox. Teheran has allowed at least three runs in five consecutive starts. But he is a stellar 3-0 with a 2.77 ERA at home, which is where he will face the New York Mets on Sunday.

Pitching Notes

* Jerome Williams (hamstring) just went on the disabled list, but that may not necessarily be a bad thing for the Philadelphia Phillies. Williams (3-7, 6.43 ERA) has an 11.45 ERA in three June starts. Philadelphia has not yet named a starter to face Michael Wacha and the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday.

* The Cleveland Indians will round out their weekend series against the visiting Tampa Bay Rays with Corey Kluber on Saturday and Trevor Bauer on Sunday. In his last eight starts, Kluber’s ERA has shrunk from 5.04 to 3.54. Bauer has six quality starts in his last seven outings and he is coming off seven innings of scoreless work at the Cubs on Tuesday.

Injury Notes

* Mets’ second baseman Daniel Murphy (.283, 4 HR, 29 RBI) has not played since June 4 because of a quadriceps injury. A weekend return had been targeted, but now New York is looking toward next Tuesday to see Murphy back in the lineup.

MLB roundup: Nearly perfect, Nationals' Scherzer throws no-hitter
By THE SPORTS XCHANGE

WASHINGTON -- Max Scherzer turned in his second fabulous outing in a row, pitching a no-hitter as the Washington Nationals beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 6-0 on Saturday before a sellout crowd of 41,104.

Scherzer lost a perfect game when he hit Jose Tabata with a pitch on a 2-2 count with two outs in the ninth. Scherzer then retired second baseman Josh Harrison on a fly ball to left field for the last out.

Scherzer, who also contributed a hit at the plate, struck out 10 in his third career complete game and third shutout. Scherzer (8-5) was making his first start since he threw a one-hit shutout with a franchise-record 16 strikeouts on Sunday in Milwaukee.

Bryce Harper and Tyler Moore each drove in two runs. Harper hit his 23rd homer of the season.

White Sox 3, Rangers 2

CHICAGO -- Carlos Rodon bounced back from his first big-league loss with six solid innings and Chicago ended a season-high eight-game losing streak.

White Sox closer David Robertson, who failed to protect a one-run lead Friday night when starter Chris Sale threw eight scoreless innings and struck out 14, earned his 14th save with a perfect ninth.

The bullpen effort earned Rodon (3-1) the victory after the rookie left-handed pitcher allowed only two runs in six innings. Rodon scattered four hits and struck five while walking three.

Orioles 5, Blue Jays 3

TORONTO -- Caleb Joseph singled home the go-ahead run in the ninth inning as Baltimore beat Toronto.

Manny Machado added a two-run double in the three-run ninth as the Orioles snapped the Blue Jays' three-game winning streak.

Right-handed reliever Darren O'Day (3-0), who pitched out of a bases-loaded jam in the eighth, picked up the win. Blue Jays left-handed reliever Aaron Loup (2-4) took the loss.

Cubs 4, Twins 1 (10)

MINNEAPOLIS -- Starlin Castro's two-run single in the top of the 10th inning helped Chicago snap a two-game losing streak and end Minnesota's three-game winning streak.

Chris Denorfia added an RBI single later in the inning, giving the Cubs a three-run advantage. Blaine Boyer took the loss, allowing three earned runs on three hits and a walk in 2/3 inning.

Chicago's Jon Lester pitched 6 1/3 innings, allowing three hits and three walks while striking out seven. Minnesota right-hander Trevor May lasted six innings, giving up one run on seven hits and two walks while also striking out seven.

Rockies 5, Brewers 1

DENVER -- Chad Bettis pitched into the seventh as Colorado stopped a five-game losing streak and won for just the second time in 11 games.

Charlie Blackmon hit a two-run homer and had a season-high three RBIs. Michael McKenry and Ben Paulsen drove in Colorado's other runs.

Adam Lind homered for Milwaukee.

A's 4, Angels 1

OAKLAND, Calif. -- Jesse Hahn gave up one run in 7 2/3 innings and Oakland defeated Los Angeles.

Hahn allowed four hits, struck out four and walked four to improve to 4-1 in his past six starts. Stephen Vogt went 3-for-3 with an RBI and one of the A's five doubles.

Jared Weaver lost his fourth straight start, matching his career high. Mike Trout went 1-for-2, scored a run and walked twice.

Marlins 5, Reds 0

CINCINNATI -- Justin Nicolino posted his first major-league victory in his debut and third baseman Derek Dietrich homered twice for Miami.

Nicolino (1-0) was recalled from Triple-A New Orleans when right-hander Tom Koehler was scratched from his start because of neck and back soreness. He allowed just four hits in seven innings.

Dietrich hit a solo homer in the fourth off Reds starter Anthony DeSclafani and added a two-run shot in the seventh off left-hander Manny Parra for his first multi-homer game.

Cardinals 10, Phillies 1

PHILADELPHIA -- Randal Grichuk's first multi-home-run game propelled St. Louis over Philadelphia.

Grichuck went 3-for-5 with three runs and four RBIs. Jason Heyward and Jhonny Peralta had three hits apiece and combined for three RBIs.

The victory moved St. Louis to a major-league best 22 games above .500. The Phillies, meanwhile, dropped to a major-league-worst 24 games below the break-even mark with their sixth loss in a row.

Giants 6, Dodgers 2

LOS ANGELES -- Brandon Belt and Justin Maxwell homered as San Francisco cruised past the Dodgers for the fifth straight time and the ninth time in 11 meetings this season.

Tim Hudson allowed two runs on six hits in 6 1/3 innings as the Giants

closed within a half-game of the first-place Dodgers in the National League West.

Joc Pederson hit his club-leading 18th home run for the Dodgers.

Rays 4, Indians 1

CLEVELAND -- Evan Longoria hit a three-run home run in the first inning as Tampa Bay won for the eighth time in nine games and improved to 14-5 in June.

Right-hander Erasmo Ramirez had to leave the game after three innings with a strained groin, but Tampa Bay's bullpen was able to finish the job.

Cleveland right-hander Corey Kluber (3-9) pitched seven innings but took the loss. The nine losses match his total from last year, when he was 18-9 en route to winning the American League Cy Young Award.

Braves 6, Mets 4

ATLANTA -- Andrelton Simmons matched a career high with four hits as Atlanta knocked New York out of first place in the National League East.

Simmons was 4-for-4 with two runs and one RBI as the bottom of the order produced nine of the Braves' 10 hits. A.J. Pierzynski added three hits, including a double and a triple, and scored three runs.

Mets catcher Travis d'Arnaud hyperextended his left arm in a collision with Pierzynski at the plate and had to leave the game. X-rays were negative.

Yankees 14, Tigers 3

NEW YORK -- Alex Rodriguez hit a three-run home run and drove in five runs while switch-hitter Carlos Beltran homered from both sides of the plate as New York rolled past Detroit.

A night after becoming the 29th player to reach 3,000 hits with a home run off Justin Verlander, Rodriguez drove in five runs for the first time since April 23, 2011 at Baltimore and first time at home since May 31, 2010 against Cleveland. He drove in runs with a fielder's choice and sacrifice fly in his first two plate appearances and hit his 668th career home run in New York's five-run third.

Beltran recorded his 37th multi-homer game in consecutive innings. He homered from the left side of the plate against right-hander Alfredo Simon (7-4) in the third and connected in the fourth from the right side off lefty Ian Krol.

Royals 7, Red Sox 4

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Kendrys Morales and Salvador Perez homered as Kansas City came from behind to defeat Boston.

The Royals batted around in a five-run fifth to take the lead after trailing 4-1. Morales' home run with Lorenzo Cain aboard put the Royals ahead to stay.

Right-hander Edinson Volquez (7-4) won his third straight start, giving up four runs on eight hits and two walks.

Mariners 6, Astros 3

SEATTLE -- Seattle hit three home runs off Houston starter Dallas Keuchel to beat the Astros.

Nelson Cruz, Seth Smith and Mark Trumbo each hit a solo homer off Keuchel, who had allowed only four homers all season, to lift the Mariners to their second consecutive win while closing the gap in the American League West standings.

Keuchel (8-3) gave up season highs of five runs, four walks and three home runs in the loss. All four of his walks came in the second inning, during which he walked in two runs to give up an early 2-0 lead.

Padres 8, Diamondbacks 1

PHOENIX -- Clint Barmes had three hits and two RBIs and right-hander Tyson Ross pitched his third career complete game in San Diego's victory over Arizona at Chase Field.

Ross (4-7) gave up four hits, tied a season high with nine strikeouts and also had an RBI triple in a four-run ninth inning while halting a three-game losing streak.

Clint Barmes singled, doubled twice, had two RBIs and scored twice for the Padres, who had lost five of six. They are 2-3 under interim manager Pat Murphy.

Mariners name Martinez batting coach
By THE SPORTS XCHANGE

Edgar Martinez, who won two batting titles with the Seattle Mariners, was appointed batting coach by the team on Saturday, general manager Jack Zduriencik announced.

Martinez, who was in uniform for Saturday night's game against the Houston Astros, replaced Howard Johnson, who was reassigned to the Mariners' minor-league system.

"Watching the club it had become apparent to me that we had reached the point that a change was necessary," Zduriencik said. "I appreciate Howard Johnson's professionalism and work ethic, but we simply were not getting the results that we expect and require.

"I have had the opportunity to observe Edgar over the past several years at Spring Training and working with our young hitters in the minor leagues. He is passionate and knowledgeable about hitting and understands the work that needs to be done to be successful as a big league hitter.

"His resume, desire to contribute at this time and ability to convey complex information about hitting is what drew us to this decision."

Martinez, 52, has spent the last several seasons working as a guest hitting instructor for the Mariners at Spring Training, and had an extended schedule this year working in Seattle's minor league system.

During an 18-year major-league career, all with the Mariners, Martinez posted a lifetime average of .311 with 514 doubles, 309 home runs and 1,261 runs batted in. He won American League batting titles in 1992 and 1995.

Upon his retirement, Major League Baseball re-named the DH of the Year Award the Edgar Martinez Award, and he was enshrined in the Mariners Hall of Fame in 2007.

Orioles make five roster moves
By THE SPORTS XCHANGE

The Baltimore Orioles reinstated right-hander Kevin Gausman from the disabled list to start Saturday's game against the Toronto Blue Jays.

Gausman, 24, was placed on the 15-day disabled list with right shoulder tendinitis on May 8. He made three rehab appearances with Class A (Advanced) Frederick and Double-A Bowie, going 0-1 with a 5.40 ERA and 10 strikeouts in 8 1/3 innings.

In eight games with the Orioles this season, Gausman is 1-0 with a 4.50 ERA in 12 innings. Over 48 career major league appearances (25 starts), he is 11-12 with a 4.21 ERA.

The Orioles also selected the contract of right-hander Mychal Givens from Double-A Bowie, and optioned right-handers Tyler Wilson and Mike Wright to Triple-A Norfolk.

Givens, 25, went 3-1 with a 1.60 ERA and 12 saves in 23 games with Double-A Bowie this season. Wilson, 25, has gone 1-1 with a 2.12 ERA in five games (one start) with the Orioles. Wright, 25, has gone 2-3 with a 5.16 ERA over six games with the Orioles.

In addition, the club transferred right-hander Jason Garcia the 60-day disabled list. Garcia, 22, was placed on the 15-day disabled list with right shoulder tendinitis on May 13.

'Runs at a Premium'

When the Minnesota resume their three game interleague series at Target Field against Chicago the Twins will look to continue a solid trend for 'Under' gamblers. The Twins 7-2 'Under' the past nine at Target Field have played 'Under' in 8-of-11 vs the senior league. Another positive for 'Under' gamblers has been when Twins hand the ball to Kyle Gibson in the month of June. In that case, the 'Under' has been the right choice in seven of his last ten trips to the mound. The fact Twins lost Saturday is yet one more reason runs may be at a premium. Gibson has shown he can keep the score low following a team loss the previous effort. In the last five occurrence the 'Under' has hit 4 times. Additionally, Cubbies have shown a penchant for 'Under' when handing starting duties to Jake Arrieta. In that case, the 'Under' has been the right decision in seven of his thirteen starts (7-3-3) including 4-1 'Under' in day games.

Bonus Play Sunday

RAYS (Colome) @ INDIANS (Anderson)

Take: INDIANS -123

The amazing Rays continue to roll right along. Here’s a team with severe payroll restrictions that actually hasn’t drafted especially well over the past handful of years, and yet they just keep on contending. They lost a top exec and a great manager in the off season, they’ve had a slew of pitching injuries and there they are, sitting 40-30 and residing atop the AL East.

In other words, this is not a team that’s easy to bet against as they just keep finding ways to win. But I’ll take my chances that the Rays can’t win ’em all and will make a case for the Indians to salvage the finale of this weekend set.

No real knocks on Alex Colome, who will start for TB here. His last outing was downright ugly, but for the most part, Colome has accomplished his mission. His task is to throw 5-6 okay innings and give his team a chance to win the game. Colome has managed to do that in six of his ten starts. So while he’s clearly not a top tier starting pitcher at this point, the rookie has been more good than bad for the Rays. But that hasn’t shown up in the results, as Tampa Bay is only 3-7 when Colome gets the call.

But I’m going to side with the first time starter today. Cody Anderson has had a nice year at two levels for the Indians. Coming into this season, the righty was somewhat stuck on the organizational chart. Anderson did not pitch well at AA Akron last year and was therefore not promoted to the next level to start this season. But it appears as though an improved mental approach has served Anderson well and he’s now ready to see what he can do in the bigs.

Anderson doesn’t have blow away stuff but his BB/K rates have improved this season and the buzz I’ve heard is that he’s gone from nibbling to attacking. His slider, which was grading as below average last year has gotten much better. Whether or not this translates to success at the major league level is obviously unknown right now. But Anderson does at least now check in as a live prospect with a chance to stick.

The big edge for Anderson today is that no one on the Rays has ever faced him. That might not seem like it’s significant, but if you look at results for debuting starting pitchers, there’s apparently something to it.

The Tribe grades out higher on the offensive models, while the bullpen advantage here tilts toward the Rays side. I have this game priced right where it presently sits, so no particular value with either side there. But I do like the situation, as the Indians will be eager to avoid getting swept and I like backing first time starters who have some talent. The Indians are already on my personal card for Sunday, and I’ll use them as the Bonus Play today as well.

Game of the Day: Giants at Dodgers

San Francisco Giants at Los Angeles Dodgers (-170, 7.5)

The visiting San Francisco Giants can continue their dominance over the Los Angeles Dodgers and take over first place in the NL West on Sunday as they aim for a sweep of the three-game series. The Giants have won five straight and nine of 11 meetings against the Dodgers this season to move one-half game behind Los Angeles, which has dropped five of six overall.

“We have a half-game lead in the division, but (San Francisco) has basically gained seven games on us in the games we’ve played against them,” Dodgers manager Don Mattingly told reporters. “So obviously, that’s something that we have to be able to change.” Third baseman Justin Turner has continued his stellar play with home runs in back-to-back games, but the Dodgers need more production from first baseman Adrian Gonzalez, who is batting .222 with one home run this month. The Giants could be without left fielder Nori Aoki for Sunday’s series finale after the left fielder exited Saturday’s 6-2 win in the first inning after being hit on the right foot by a pitch from Carlos Frias. Aoki, who is listed as day-to-day after X-rays came back negative, ranks in the National League’s top 10 in hits, batting average and on-base percentage.

TV: 8:05 p.m. ET, ESPN

LINE HISTORY: The Dodgers opened as -160 home favorites and have been bet to -170. The total has held steady at 7.5 runs.

INJURY REPORT:

Giants - LF N. Aoki (doubtful Sunday, leg), RF H. Pence (15-day DL, wrist), SP M. Cain (15-day DL, forearm), SP J. Peavy (Mid June, back), 2B M. Scutaro (out for season, back).

Dodgers - RP J. Peralta (questionable Monday, neck), RP C. Hatcher (15-day DL, oblique), RP P. Rodriguez (15-day DL, elbow), RP P. Baez (60-day DL, shoulder), RP B. League (60-day DL, shoulder), LF C. Crawford (60-day DL, oblique).

PITCHING MATCHUP: Giants RH Tim Lincecum (7-3, 3.31 ERA) vs. Dodgers LH Brett Anderson (2-4, 3.43)

Lincecum did just enough to earn the victory against Seattle on Tuesday, when he allowed two runs on five hits over 5 2/3 innings. The two-time Cy Young award winner has not pitched past the sixth inning in any of his last five starts and has struggled with his control all season with 35 walks in 73 1/3 innings. Yasiel Puig is 10-for-17 against Lincecum, who is 11-8 with a 3.31 ERA in 29 games against the Dodgers, including 2-1 with a 2.65 ERA in three starts this season.

Anderson is winless in his last seven starts but pitched well on Tuesday and received a no-decision after holding Texas to two runs over a season-high eight innings. The 27-year-old owns a 1-1 record and 3.32 ERA in seven starts at home, and the Dodgers are 5-2 over that span. Anderson is 0-2 with a 6.00 ERA in three starts against the Giants this season, and he’s struggled to contain Brandon Crawford, who has five hits in six at-bats.

TRENDS:

* Giants are 5-0 in the last five meetings.
* Over is 4-1-1 in the last six meetings in Los Angeles.
* Dodgers are 1-6 in their last seven games versus a team with a winning record.
*

CONSENSUS: Bettors are split almost exactly down the middle for this contest, with 52.21 percent of wagers backing the Dodgers at -160.

Complimentary Horse Pick for June 21st, 2015

BELMONT PARK #5 at 03:25 PM Eastern

Top Pick: #2 (DAVID ROCKS) (5-2) - 'David' is the main speed on paper and breaks just off the rail. Believe he'll be loose on the lead in the slop, and that can lead to his maiden win.

2nd Pick: #4 (New York Victory) (7-2) - One of two entered by trainer Patty Farro, and the pair race uncoupled. He showed little when debuting at Monmouth May 9, but it came facing much tougher. Barn drops him down and has him in with fellow state breds. Win candidate.

3rd Pick: #6 (Bytemark) (10-1) - He's dropping down and moving from turf to dirt. Even paced type fits on 'figures' and enters off a fast work June 11. In the mix.

4th Pick: #1 (Norm the Giant) (10-1) - The second of the Farro pair has been on the sidelines since late January. He showed little in two starts at that time. Working well at Monmouth, and he has the rail.
