Bonus Play Sunday
(821) ILLINOIS CHICAGO at (822) DETROIT 2:00PM
Take: (821) ILLINOIS CHICAGO +10
This is more about building a case against the favorite than making one for the underdog. It’s one of those games where I want to play vs. the chalk based on what I’ve been seeing and that means being willing to plunk down the dollars on a mediocre visitor.
There’s not much positive to say about UIC. The Flames just aren’t very talented. They’re below par at both ends of the court and in a nutshell, that’s why UIC is 5-19. Considering there’s a good chance UIC will end up with single digit wins for the fourth time in five years under Howard Moore, I’d say there’s a decent chance he could be on the way out of Chicago at season’s end.
But Detroit is no bargain either. The Titans have some talent, and I firmly believe they should be better than 11-14. If you’ve watched this team play recently, however, it’s no mystery as to why they’re struggling. There just doesn’t seem to be any real on-court intensity and I sense there’s a lack of chemistry on this team.
Detroit has dropped five of its last seven, and the two wins were both in overtime. That’s not the type of line one wants to see when considering giving up a bunch of points. The Titans are playing for little more than pride until the conference tournament, as they have no current shot at landing any kind of post-season invite.
The first meeting between these two teams went to the wire, as Detroit escaped with a 69-68 victory. This was an unbelievable loss for the Flames. They were up one with the ball with less than three seconds to play. UIC decided to go the Hail Mary route, which was smart in that even if Detroit got the ball, they’d have no time to get a good shot. But one of the UIC players somehow was whistled for a loose ball foul, Detroit hit both free throws and that was that.
Suffice to say if there’s one game the Flames would really appear to want, this is it. This is clearly in the meaningful revenge category for UIC and while I don’t trust them to get an upset, I believe they can compete again vs. this shaky Detroit entry. I’ll grab the substantial points with Illinois Chicago.
