AAA Texas 500 Preview
By Micah Roberts

Jimmie Johnson is on a roll and his seventh Sprint Cup title is within reach, which would tie him for the most all-time with Richard Petty and Dale Earnhardt. He's now the 2/1 favorite at the Westgate Las Vegas SuperBook to win it all.

Johnson became the first driver to punch his ticket in the Championship Round with a win at Martinsville on Sunday, the ninth of his career there, and only three spots remain with two races to go in the Round of 8 until the season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway on Nov. 20 where the 2016 Sprint Cup championship will be crowned.

This week the series travels to Texas Motor Speedway for the second time this season for Sunday's AAA Texas 500. It will be the 10th of 11 races on 1.5-mile tracks this season and the first nine should lend plenty of data to find who is most likely to win this week.

Kyle Busch won the April 9 race at Texas for his second career win on the high-banked track. However it was sixth-place finisher Martin Truex Jr. who led the most laps (141). Seventh-place Carl Edwards would lead the second-most (124).

Truex was eliminated from the Chase two weeks ago after Talladega, but has led the most laps (1,743) on all tracks this season, including the group of 10 races on 1.5-mile tracks. He should be considered at least the co-favorite to win this week despite never winning at Texas in 22 career starts. He has wins on 1.5s at Charlotte and Chicago already this season and with a championship not in his future anymore, his main goal is to lead the season in wins. He's currently tied with Kevin Harvick, Brad Keselowski, Johnson and Busch with four wins each.

Edwards put himself in a rough spot by finishing 36th at Martinsville last week because now he has to win one of the next two races to advance. He's a three-time winner at Texas, but doesn't have any of his two wins this season on a 1.5. However, he was runner-up at Kansas three weeks at ago, a 1.5-mile track, but much flatter than Texas. He's finished 10th or better in his last four Texas starts and his last win there was with Roush Fenway Racing in 2008 when he swept the season.

The driver I think you really need to consider as the winner this week is Johnson, who has won five of the last eight races at Texas and has six overall. He's got the recent history there, but there are a couple of better reasons to support Johnson. First off, he has no pressure and he can race worry-free knowing no matter what happens he's still in the Championship Round.

The next reason is probably the best in favor of Johnson winning. It was at a Chicago test session a few weeks before the Chase began where master crew chief Chad Knaus found something to get the team more speed on the 1.5s -- a perfect balanced set-up for the No. 48. On the first 1.5-mile track after the test, Johnson led the most laps (118) at Chicago before a late race miscue relegated them to 12th. A few weeks later at Charlotte he would lead a race-high 155 laps and win, and then on the last 1.5 raced at he would finish fourth at Kansas.

What stands out most is the Charlotte win because Texas resembles its sister-track the most. So he's got the whole pre-race package showing he's most likely to win -- car, speed, motivation, past success, and recent success. However, there are plenty of other drivers hungrier for a win and knowing Johnson is in the Chase, they'd have no problem punting him out of the way late to secure their own future. But first they have to catch him.

Those desperate drivers racing for a championship still are Edwards, Kurt Busch, Harvick and Joey Logano. Harvick won the last race on a 1.5 at Kansas and Logano finished third. Denny Hamlin and Matt Kenseth are both tied for second, five-points out, from Johnson and Kyle Busch is fourth, just four points ahead of fifth-place Logano. Kenseth and Hamlin are both two-time winners at Texas.

Top-5 Finish Prediction:

1) #48 Jimmie Johnson (5/1)
2) #78 Martin Truex Jr. (5/1)
3) #20 Matt Kenseth (8/1)
4) #18 Kyle Busch (8/1)
5) #4 Kevin Harvick (7/1)

NHL roundup: Crosby scores twice in Penguins' 5-0 victory
By The Sports Xchange

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Sidney Crosby scored two goals as the Pittsburgh Penguins continued their dominance over the San Jose Sharks with a 5-0 victory Saturday night at SAP Center.
By handing the Sharks their second straight loss on home ice and third in a row overall, the Penguins swept the two-game season series four months after needed six games to capture the Stanley Cup over San Jose.
Crosby surprisingly leads the NHL with eight goals after having missed the first six games of the season with a concussion. Speedy linemate Carl Hagelin chipped in three assists, including on each of the Pittsburgh captain's two tallies.
Goalie Matt Murray made 32 saves in his second appearance of the season to record his second career shutout.

Canadiens 5, Flyers 4
MONTREAL -- Montreal rebounded from an embarrassing outing a night earlier with a victory over Philadelphia.
Andrei Markov, Greg Pateryn, Alex Galchenyuk, Phillip Danault and Tomas Plekanec scored for the Canadiens (10-1-1), who handed coach Michel Therrien his 250th win behind the Montreal bench.
Carey Price made 34 saves for the Canadiens, who lost 10-0 in Columbus on Friday.
Chris VandeVelde, Shayne Gostisbehere, Claude Giroux and Travis Konecny replied for the Flyers.

Blackhawks, 3, Stars 2
DALLAS -- Patrick Kane had a goal and an assist and Corey Crawford made 31 saves as Chicago defeated Dallas for its fifth straight victory.
Chicago scored 11 seconds into the game when Richard Panik shoveled home a rebound. Kane stole the puck in the neutral zone to set up the game's first chance and Niemi struggled to hold the rebound. Jonathan Toews and Panik each dug for the rebound.
Chicago took a 3-2 lead on the power play when Kane easily scored after a pass from Artemi Anisimov. Anismov has a point in 10 straight games.

Rangers 5, Bruins 2
BOSTON -- Derek Stepan and Kevin Hayes scored shorthanded goals and Antti Raanta made 35 saves to power New York to its fourth straight victory while ending Boston's three-game winning streak.
Stepan, who also had two assists, defenseman Matt Holden and rookie Pavel Buchnevich all scored their first goals of the season - Buchnevich the first of his NHL career - for the Rangers.
New York, which beat the Bruins for the second time in 11 nights, scored 21 goals during their four-game streak and Saturday handed Boston goaltender Tuukka Rask his first loss of the season after a 6-0 start.

Capitals 3, Panthers 2
WASHINGTON -- T.J. Oshie scored twice, Alex Ovechkin added a goal and an assist and Washington rallied past Florida for its fifth straight victory.
Jared McCann and Reilly Smith scored, and Roberto Luongo made 32 saves for the Panthers.
Braden Holtby stopped 22 shots for the Capitals. Ovechkin tied the score at 8:42 and has five points in his last two games before Oshie made it 3-2 with 9:02 left.

Maple Leafs 6, Canucks 3
TORONTO -- Tyler Bozak scored two goals and had an assist as Toronto defeated Vancouver for its third consecutive victory.
The Canucks have lost eight in a row and seven straight in regulation.
Nazem Kadri, Mitch Marner, Nikita Soshnikov and Jake Gardiner also scored for Maple Leafs, who are 4-1-0 at home.
Derek Dorsett, Henrik Sedin and Daniel Sedin tallied for Vancouver.

Kings 5, Flames 0
LOS ANGELES -- Devin Setoguchi scored twice, Dustin Brown added two assists and Peter Budaj had 24 saves as Los Angeles defeated Calgary.
The Kings won their second straight at home following a three-game losing streak. The victory moved Los Angeles into a tie with San Jose and Anaheim for second place in the Pacific Division, five point behind Edmonton.
The Flames were shut out for the first time this season and have lost three of their last four games, scoring only two goals in the losses. Brian Elliott made 34 saves.

Oilers 4, Islanders 3
NEW YORK -- Mark Letestu scored the only goal in the shootout to lift Edmonton to a come-from-behind victory over New York.
Patrick Maroon, Leon Draisaitl and Milan Lucic also scored for the Oilers, who trailed 2-0. Edmonton goaltender Cam Talbot made 32 saves, including a stop by John Tavares on breakaway in the final 15 seconds of overtime.
Nick Leddy, Shane Prince and Casey Cizikas also scored for the Islanders, who have lost two straight shootouts and are 0-1-2 in their last three games.

Blues 2, Blue Jackets 1 (OT)
ST. LOUIS -- Vladimir Tarasenko scored 4:17 into overtime to give St. Louis a victory over Columbus.
The goal broke a streak of seven consecutive games without a goal for Tarasenko, who had scored four times in the first four games this season.
The loss snapped a three-game winning streak for the Blue Jackets.

Sabres 2, Senators 1
OTTAWA -- Robin Lehner won the duel between former goaltending partners as Buffalo snapped Ottawa's three-game winning streak.
Lehner, who spent five seasons in the Senators' organization before being dealt to the Sabres in the spring of 2015, was often brilliant while making 32 saves.
Ottawa's Craig Anderson also turned in a strong performance, making 30 saves on Hockey Fights Cancer night in Ottawa. Anderson's wife, Nicholle, was recently diagnosed with cancer.

Avalanche 1, Wild 0
DENVER -- Captain Gabriel Landeskog scored and Calvin Pickard stopped 32 shots in his second career shutout as Colorado snapped a two-game slide.
Pickard came up big for the Avalanche, who were in a scoring drought that spanned three games. Colorado endured 164 minutes, 48 seconds without a goal before Landeskog cashed in on the power play near the midway point of the third period.
Devan Dubnyk made 31 saves for the Wild.

Lightning 4, Devils 1
TAMPA, Fla. -- Brayden Point scored his first career goal and Ben Bishop made 37 saves as Tampa Bay defeated New Jersey.
Brian Boyle, Victor Hedman and Nikita Kucherov also scored for the Lightning, who have six power-play goals in their last six games.
Damon Severson scored for the Devils, who failed to pick up a point for the first time in six games. Cory Schneider made 31 saves.

Hurricanes 3, Predators 2 (SO)
NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Defenseman Jaccob Slavin scored on the last attempt of a shootout as Carolina kept Nashville in an early-season slump.
Slavin slid the puck through the legs of goaltender Pekka Rinne to seal the Hurricanes' first win in four shootout tries this season. Can Ward stopped 25 shots for Carolina, including a clutch save on Filip Forsberg's backhand with about a minute left in overtime.
The Predators lost for the sixth time in seven games, failing to take advantage of home ice after a 1-2-2 road trip.

Preview: Avalanche (5-5) at Blues (6-4)

Date: November 06, 2016 5:00 PM EDT

ST. LOUIS -- Maybe a goal by right winger Vladimir Tarasenko provided the jumpstart needed by the St. Louis Blues' offense.

Tarasenko, St. Louis' leading scorer, had not recorded a goal in seven consecutive games before his overtime goal Saturday night gave the Blues a 2-1 victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets.

The Blues won't have to wait long to see if that happens as they will be back in action Sunday afternoon when they host the Colorado Avalanche.

Tarasenko's streak without a goal has coincided with a total offensive slump by the Blues, who have not scored more than two goals in their last six games and in eight of their previous nine.

It was the longest streak for Tarasenko without a goal since going eight games with no goals early in the 2013-14 season.

"The amount of time that we've been pouring into meetings the last few days, it hasn't been a great feeling around this locker room," defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk said. "Finally to have sometime positive to build off it ... we have to bring that hunger into tomorrow's game that we had tonight."

The Blues scored 26 goals in their 12 games this season.

The Avalanche also are coming off a low-scoring win, getting a power-play goal from Gabriel Landeskog midway through the third period and a shutout from Calvin Pickard to beat the Minnesota Wild 1-0 on Saturday afternoon for their second win in six games.

While the Blues got a good game from backup Carter Hutton, who stopped 20 of 21 shots, and the Avalanche got the shutout from Pickard, each team is expected to have their regular goaltender in net for Sunday's game as the Blues' Jake Allen opposes Semyon Varlamov.

Allen allowed nine goals in last two games, regulation losses agalnst the Rangers in New York and the Stars in Dallas. It's only the fourth time in Allen's career he has allowed four or more goals in consecutive games.

Varlamov has struggled as well, going 2-5-0 to start the season.

"We're setting our goalie plan week to week," Colorado coach Jared Bednar said. "Varly is getting a good opportunity early but we're not setting our schedule month by month or season long.

"We said this week we're going with Varly, Pick and back to Varly and play a rested goalie in back to backs because we believe in both of them. We'll get to a point where we need results so we can ride a hot goalie for a little bit."

Preview: Oilers (8-3) at Red Wings (6-5)

Date: November 06, 2016 5:00 PM EDT

DETROIT -- The Edmonton Oilers will be a big test for the Detroit Red Wings on Sunday at Joe Louis Arena.

Edmonton (8-3-1) snapped a three-game losing streak with a 4-3 shootout win against the New York Islanders in Brooklyn on Saturday night. The Oilers rallied from a 2-0 deficit.

Detroit (6-5-1) has lost four straight (0-3-1) after a 5-3 setback to the Winnipeg Jets at Joe Louis Arena on Friday night.

The Red Wings main issue has been the lack of attention to detail, which has led to them allowing 14 goals in the past three games.

"We try to focus on attention to detail in practice, doing everything right every day, and we got to continue to make sure we do a great job with it," Detroit coach Jeff Blashill told www.mlive.com on Saturday. "If you don't have attention every day in life you're not going to have attention to detail in every game. Our attention to detail has to be perfect. If it's perfect, we're a really good hockey team."

Said goaltender Jimmy Howard: "I think it's self-inflicted. We're playing good hockey and then we just have some mental breaks and it's costing us right now."

Blashill said his team surrendered nine scoring chances to Winnipeg on Friday, with six or seven being Grade A opportunities. He called those numbers unacceptable.

"We had as many (chances) as we gave up (Friday)," he said. "We just got to make sure when we do give up them up they're earned and we're not shooting ourselves in the foot."

Those kind of breakdowns could be even more costly against Edmonton, which is led by second-year star forward Connor McDavid, the top pick in the 2015 NHL Draft who has five goals and 13 points in 12 games.

Red Wings defenseman Danny DeKeyser will likely be matched up against McDavid's line.

"He's got tremendous speed and he's super explosive," DeKeyser said of McDavid. "You've just got to be aware of where he is on the ice, and he thinks the game really well. Other guys that don't have the puck, you've got to have your man because he'll find open teammates."

There's a good chance the Oilers will be without forwards Jesse Puljujarvi (charley horse) and Zack Kassian (lower body), who both left Saturday night's game in the first period and did not return. Edmonton coach Todd McLellan said each is doubtful for Sunday.

"To stick with it, short bench like we had," said the Oilers Mark Letestu, who scored the only goal of the shootout Saturday night. "Basically rolling three lines and mixing a guy in, to get it to overtime and give ourselves a chance to get that second point, it was a gutsy effort."

Patrick Maroon, Leon Draisaitl and Milan Lucic scored in regulation for the Oilers.

Howard will start in goal for Detroit. Cam Talbot made 30 saves for Edmonton against the Islanders.

Preview: Jets (5-6) at Rangers (9-3)

Date: November 06, 2016 7:00 PM EDT

The New York Rangers will go for their fifth straight win and eighth in nine games on Sunday when they host the Winnipeg Jets at Madison Square Garden.

The Rangers (9-3-0) will also look to continue a streak that's perhaps even more impressive. They've scored at least five goals in four straight and five of six, something that doesn't happen very often in today's NHL.

Their 5-2 victory in Boston on Saturday night wasn't as easy at the score indicated. The Bruins outshot the Rangers 37-24 but were victimized by uneven goaltending from Tuukka Rask.

"We didn't play our best game but we found a way to make a couple of plays and beat one of the goaltenders that had been one of the hottest so far in the league," Rangers coach Alain Vigneault said after the Rangers handed Rask his first loss in seven games.

The Rangers scored their first two shorthanded goals of the season and another on the power play. Backup goaltender Antti Raanta made 35 saves to give starter Henrik Lundqvist the night off before facing the Jets at home Sunday.

"Tonight we were able to capitalize on a few chances," Vigneault said. "If you analyze the game, the difference was our goaltending was better than theirs and our specialty teams got us a goal on the power play and got us a couple shorthanded looks."

The Jets are one of the NHL's youngest teams and, to start the season, one of the busiest. They have played eight games in 13 days as they venture into a stretch of 28 games in 49 days, one that limits practice time for coach Paul Maurice.

For a young team, teaching is important, but the lack of off-days means most of the teaching doesn't happen on the ice.

"The practice time is the thing with a young team," Maurice told the Winnipeg Sun. "The details you'd like to work on instead of showing them video, but that's our schedule and that's not changing.

"The next time we have a practice, I don't know, in December, we will tailor how we practice, the load."

Along with the schedule, the Jets have also been challenged with injuries.

The good news is the Jets have won two straight but their most recent victory - a 5-3 win against the Red Wings in Detroit on Friday - came without seven of their regulars. Right winger Joel Armia and center Mathieu Perreault were the latest to go down and missed that game against the Red Wings.

When they take the ice against the Rangers on Sunday night, they will do so without defenseman Tyler Myers, center Bryan Little and right winger Drew Stafford. That means a chance for 22-year-old Andrew Copp, a third-round pick in 2013 who was recalled by the team Thursday. He has an assist in two games.

"It's important that he gets an opportunity fairly early and we're real happy with what he's doing with the Moose with the role he's in and the opportunity he's been getting," Maurice told the Winnipeg Sun.

"We're trying to, I don't know if we should say change his role, but put him back in a position he was in when he came out of college - he was an important two-way player who could handle the puck and make some plays and do more than just check."
