Floridians flocked to Cocoa Beach on Thursday after it reopened for sunbathing, sitting in chairs, and other social activities — as beach rules were relaxed following restrictions that were implemented on April 2, amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Families were seen carrying backpacks, beach towels, and coolers, while friends laid on blankets on the sand to soak up the sun.

Cocoa Beach’s executive order specifies that beach goers must practice social distancing of at least 6 feet in all directions and keep groups to a number of five or less.

Officials had previously enacted an order that prohibited sunbathing, but still allowed the beaches to be used for recreational purposes such as walking, jogging, biking, fishing, surfing and swimming.

Nearby, Satellite Beach reopened with some restrictions.

“The City would like to thank our community for continuing to abide by the social distancing measures we have put in place at our beaches to safeguard our residents during this pandemic response,” Satellite Beach City Manager Courtney Barker wrote in a Tuesday afternoon Facebook post.

“Since these measures have been put in place, the beaches have been areas of strong compliance, while still giving our residents a place to exercise and relax,” Barker wrote.

Cocoa Beach and Satellite Beach are located in Brevard County, where beaches have remained open to joggers and swimmers and now to sunbathers.

Jacksonville Beaches reopened last weekend to packed crowds, which prompted #FloridaMorons to start trending on social media.

Florida has confirmed a total of 29,648 COVID-19 cases, with 987 deaths.
