I've been to Riviera Maya, Cabo and Cancun, and I loved all three places in the order listed
I never felt unsafe, and while Cabo is now considered a dangerous place according to media reports, my wife and I actually walked the streets there in 2016 and even ventured into local neighborhoods to eat at local restaurants, we never even saw a hint of danger
Now while I wouldn't advise people to venture into communities controlled by the drug cartels, I don't think vacation resorts or Mexico City are dangerous. Shit, people can call places like Chicago dangerous, when in reality tourists are very safe.

i would also suggest to stay away of Białystok, podlaskie province (poland) - probably city with highest percentage of security cameras per persona.
