The Sharks' Patrick Marleau with a wraparound goal to tie Game 1 at 2-2 with 1:48 remaining in the second period. Penguins goalie Matt Murray knew exactly where Marleau was going but Murray couldn't regroup and go post-to-post in time to stop the goal.

The Pittsburgh Penguins and San Jose Sharks are tied at 2-2 after two periods in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup finals at Consol Energy Center. Shots: Pittsburgh 23, San Jose 17. After the Penguins held a 2-0 lead after first, the Sharks were able to control Pittsburgh's speed in the second period. As a result, San Jose tied the game with a power-play goal by Tomas Hertl and an even-strength goal by Patrick Marleau.

Sharks forward Patrick Marleau has 65 career playoff goals. That was his first in a Stanley Cup final.

if i'm a Sharks fan?

after that game i'd be very concerned. Pens speed causing tremendous havoc. Even the Shark's steady Vlasic had issues today. Great job by the Pens giving the trailing dee the green light to join in the rush. The best player on the ice is ,by far, Crosby. He was dangerous out there, over and over again. And finally, Murray seems very comfortable .

Back to the drawing board Sharks. No way they win this series if they let they Pitt pleasure skate thru them with such ease.

They had a few similar (or worse) games in StL, no?

Bottom line they had an awful first period and not their best game and still basically took it to OT on the road. I'm on SJ series and am not overly concerned.

yeah, not a good match-up for Thornton. These Pens are fast. he looked his age today. Yikes!! How he made Team Canada is BEYOND me...i have no words....

HC- fair enough. 2-2 after two with momentum now on the Sharks side. Pens stepped it up in the 3rd peppering Jones, out shooting SJ 18-9. Sharks need to adjust. They need to spend more time down low in Pitt's end. And they need to play way way more physical. And they are giving up the blueline too easily. TOO MUCH ROOM in the neutral zone!!!!

Agreed adjustments need to be made. That's why the coaches make the big bucks, eh? Obviously I'd prefer if the Sharks had taken game 1, but it's not like they couldn't compete out there. A few tweaks away methinks. IMO there is no major gap in skill or speed or goaltending.

17 of the 21 "experts" on NHL network picked the Sharks which is driving a lot of the comments in this thread.

The "experts" said the Sharks had team speed, on par with Pittsburgh. I was at the game last night, the suggestion the Sharks are anywhere close to the Pens in speed is preposterous.

The Pens have now outshot their opponents 10 games in a row in the playoffs.

The Sharks may win come back to this series but they are not as fast or as talented as the Penguins. There isn't a player on San Jose anywhere near Crosby's talent.

LOL at these comments.

look for burns to dominate play the rest of the series as he has all playoffs
if pens depend on rookies to score they are in trouble

cmon, dont be silly. Burns won't dominate anything if his under constant duress. If the Sharks plan to play the neutral zone as a free for all look for the Pens to outshoot them every game. The Sharks cannot play as they did in game 1.

Rust would be an unfortunate loss for Pitt. Not a cool hit by Marleau.
