Betting a bit on a late Monday afternoon. I bet Parx Race 11. One scratch brought the field down to 6. I looked the charts over and like the 5 a bit. He was 12-1 in the morning line. I bet $2 across and $1 perfecta keys 5/A and A/5. I turn back to the Parx feed and they are going to the gate. They are loading and the 5 is 21-1, by far the longest shot of the six. I figure, what the hell, it's just $16. The race starts and 20 seconds into the race, the 5 shoots around the pack and takes the lead. He never is headed and wins by widening lengths. Final odds? 8-1. He went from 21-1 to 8-1 in the final click. A 16-1 shot runs second. The 5 pays $19 to win, the 1 second-place horse pays $11 to place. Win x place should be close to the perfecta or around $200. $1 per paid $66. I'm glad my 5 won but some people knew more than I did.
