This is sad though. I have always wondered why people stay in relationships when they aren't happy. Someone explain. Is it more fear of the unknown or that it is comfortable.. what is it? hmmmm

Hache, take the plunge and divorce her. My much-lamented marriage (which I have whined about incessantly in various posts on this forum) is finally coming to an end after just over a year of misery -- and all it took, in the end, was a simple, civilised, honest talk with Mrs. Phaedrus to find that not only were both of us utterly miserable, but that we were already both basically setting up "new lives" but without the courage and fortitude to take the step. She and I both feel so much better having gotten the air cleared, despite the unhappy circumstance of a failed marriage.

If you don't love her, you shouldn't be with her, even if she does love you. Staying with her for the sake of your daughter will only hurt you in the long run, and possibly your wife and daughter as well.

You wondered why people stay in relationships in which they are unhappy...well, I can't speak for everyone, but there is a situation which applied to me and to a few people I know...

- little boy grows up with divorced, unhappy mother
- boy, either on his own, or via mother's coercion, blames himself for mother's unhappiness
- thinks his role in the world is to try his best to make a woman happy, his own happiness being secondary

A few guys later realize what went on and can eventually get a grip. But most stay unaware of the powerful psychological forces which affect them and stay mired in an endless cycle of self-sacrifice.

My theory is that you can't make another person happy unless you make yourself happy first, but that's another story altogether.

The secret for me is vacation time. We take a vacation together every year (usually a cruise) and we also take separate vacations. For instance, tonight she is heading off to french land with some friends for a couple of weeks. Later in the year my friends and I will set up a sports trip and see as many games in as many cities as we can in a week or two.
