Well, yeah, it looks like he did just sit on the info. Those recent e-mails seem to indicate he let it be known he wanted it handled internally, in a "humane" manner for the kid-rapist. All evidence points to Paterno being the biggest POS in the history of college head coaches. I can't believe they haven't already trucked in welding torches to Happy Valley.
When looking at a coach you have to look at the whole body of work. Wins/Losses are just a part of it. What were the graduation rates, how was he viewed by the public, what did he do for the community, was he a good mentor, did he run a clean program are just some of what needs to put into the equation.
When you look at the end result his career ended in utter embarassment and tons of shame and hate have been brought onto Penn St. I believe more people will remember his ending and the damage more than they will the onfield results.

If Joe persuaded the administration not to go to the authorities (and it sure seems likely that he did), then yes it should come down. I don't look at Jopa as being evil. I think he was clueless as to how to properly handle the situation - easiest thing was to try and deal with it in-house. The problem is/was no one took action to prevent Sandusky from continually molesting kids. Jopa and others turned a blind eye as to what was going on right in front of them.
Jake, do you really think that after a person in position of authority is told "Your buddy was caught raping a little kid in your shower" we shouldn't expect them to do something more than "handle it internally"?

I feel genuinely sorry for people like you. I understand your desperation in believing you have to defend your hero come-what-may, but the bottom line is he was negligent at best, as the Spannier/Curly/Shulz e-mails of only two weeks ago prove.
I'd have a lot more respect for Penn State fans if they just said: 'Great coach but he fucked up.'

There are even further suggestions that Paterno may have known about Sandusky's rapin' ways as early as 1998. If that's true, then Paterno was an extra special kind of POS.
