plus we aren't really gonna know how it holds till later tonight

as the surge hits and funnels

the winds weren't even an issue with katrina and the worst didn't come till later after landfall

we shall see

looking ahead flooding may also be an issue inland

nagin on wdsu now

some fire at a home

Two ships and a barge were in one of the canals; the canal has overtopped
and flooding. More power outages throughout city. Sewers are not working.

http://www.wdsu.com/video/17357480/index.html

waves are overtopping the levees in some areas.....we'll see if they hold

industrial canal being overtopped slightly now as well

those ships that are loose are a big concern as they could ram into the levees and such

one levee completely topped great coverage by cnn

would be surprised if all the levees hold

plus the cane slowly moving more north now vs. west and really slowing down

Many cities are. Overpopulation has led to people living in areas unfit for living. I guess people would rather live 5ft below sea level than in the middle of Nebraska.

port of NO getting flooded per CNN

big problem here is winds and water will keep funneling for hours to come....due to the wind direction and way its coming in

katrina went east filled up lake ponchatrain and then water came south breaching levees

this time stuff coming up the canal from the south and into the lake

Corps says canal wall will hold
by Robert Travis Scott, The Times-Picayune
Monday September 01, 2008, 10:22 AM

BATON ROUGE -- Despite water sloshing over the west side of the Industrial Canal wall, the Corps of Engineers is confident the wall will hold and that no significant flooding will occur as a result, a spokeswoman said this morning at the state's Emergency Operation Center.

"We're confident in the stability of that wall," which was fortified after Hurricane Katrina, said Karen Durham-Aguilera, director of Task force Hope for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

Also, the reports so far are positive on the outflow canals to Lake Ponchartrain, which was a serious source of flooding after Hurricane Katrina. Water from the drainage canals is flowing into the lake and there is no reason at this time to close the canal gates, said

Based on current surge elevations, "We're not expecting a major inundation" of New Orleans, she said. "But again, where hurricanes are concerned we have to watch it."

i'm not sure where the above relates to lower 9th ward levee though....

cause CNN guy is saying right now confirming that lower 9th ward levee being undercut (different area than during katrina) and they had to get outta there cause could blow at any time

water waterfalling over industrail canal levee for now we'll see how long levels stay up and how high it gets and if levees hold

Levee experts are still saying open the locks to the Mississippi to relieve water in Industrial Canal

but the people saying it don't have control over that and not sure its being done....

unfortunately gustav ain't moving NW away from it all...well it is slowly but not that fast...and jogging to the north again a bit....NO coming close to NE eyewall now well at least western NO....

what's happening as far as that industrial canal is concerned

is water is rushing up it from the south to the north

while winds are whipping from the SE to the NW blowing the water that way into the western levee

southern mississppi coast more towards mobile, al....that got annilated by katrina.....getting bombarded with rain and tornados too

well might be too early saying this but looking like over NO overall might be safe with no major flooding of homes and businesses

haven't heard anything else from the 9th ward breach thing

and the industrial canal levee levels seem to be dropping now

as for south of NO and the port area and how that affects domestic gas prices at the pump and such.....that's a different story....that will take a day or two to figure out once the dust settles

plus all the potential looting and such in the aftermath with the whole town cleared out pretty much.....

I can't decide if NO should be rebuilt or not.

Then again, after the Chicago fires, Chicago was rebuilt by the private sector without one dime from the government.

I'll let my fellow conservative doom-gloom stock market/hurricane forecaster tizdoom make the call.

well this is a good test run for their city

if it holds up pretty well they will learn from it and build it stronger

if a cat 5 hits them directly at some point not gonna make a bit of difference though most likely.....

either way we as a country depend on the city cause of its port....and all the shit that travels down the mississippi from many places in middle america to export abroad.......that's why there is a city there to begin with
