MLB

4% NY Mets (+110)

4% Houston Astros (+165)

3% Oakland A’s (-110)

3% Seattle Mariners (-175)

NY Mets (Colon) at San Francisco Giants (Cain) (-120) 10:15 ET

The Mets and Giants continue their early week series in the City by the Bay in this 10:15 ET start. The Giants never woke up from their time change difference of Sunday to Monday, failing to plate a run in a 3-0 loss to the Mets last night. For the Mets, the trio of late runs boosted their recent record on their west coast swing vs. the Dodgers and Giants to 3-1 with 16 total runs. In what could be today’s biggest pitching mismatch, we’ll take the NY Mets as the Dog of the Day against the defending champs, who have faltered with a 7-game losing streak.

Now that the Giants’ losing streak has dropped them to .500 at 42-42, the question is whether they are able to rebound. There certainly is motivation with the knowledge they trail the Dodgers by 5 games. The defending champs may well be the streakiest team in MLB this season. After starting the season 9-13, they have gone on runs of 21-7, 7-13, 8-1, and now 0-7. That still means they are on a 15-21 slide, following the 21-7 streak. San Fran was certainly hoping for more from Cain. Following right elbow surgery nearly 1 year ago, Cain made his first appearance against Miami, allowing 5 runs in 5 IP in a 5-4 loss to the Marlins. His 2.20 WHIP for that game was most disturbing. Perhaps having a game under his belt and returning home to face a Mets team against whom he has a recent 2.31 ERA will be a positive omen. But, that is far from guaranteed.

Far more interested in backing a resurgent Mets team and Colon, who have each rebounded from their recent slides. The Mets’ offense was horrible in a 3-10 slide. It was improbable that it would improve during this west coast swing. But, the New Yorkers have plated 16 runs, in going 3-1 vs. LAD and San Fran. Such resurgence was also true of their aging veteran, Colon. At over 40 years of age, Colon is the elder statesman of a group of young dynamic arms that make up the Mets’ pitching staff of the future. Colon went through a bit of a dip that dropped his ERA just south of 5.00. But, his return to form start, which saw him allow no runs in 7 IP vs. the Cubs in his previous outing, is a sign of good things to come. Colon will certainly not be intimidated in this venue, where in 3 starts, he is 2-0 with a 2.70 ERA
