The only time it is worth buying half a point is in NFL when the line is 3.5 but even then you are paying way too much that in the long run it will hurt you. Most books will charge $.20-.25 to go down from 3.5 to 3 or from 3 to 2.5 or from 2.5 to 3. If you are paying an extra 20 cents per dollar, that means one of every 5 games needs to be decided by that half a point to be worth it. Meaning the half a point needs to save you from a loss. In the long run, it will never save you 1 for every 4-5 games. Maybe one out of every 8 games at best. That means you are paying the book extra money that should be in your pocket. I used to do it all the time in college basketball, nba, nfl and college football and it never paid off. I honestly cannot remember a single game in any sport over last few years where I was saved by that hook, but I can recall plenty of games where not only did I lose the wager, but I also lost the extra juice. And that juice adds up very quickly and in many cases can be the difference between having a positive week and a losing week.
