Against The Number - CBB Auburn -11
Bruce Pearl has completely changed the culture of basketball on The Plains in only a few short months. He started by getting top JUCO and D1 transfers, then went out and signed a top draft class as well! He’s bringing the team to classrooms to get the students excited, and the alumni are finally interested in basketball.
I expected this number to be closer to 14.5 when it came out. I think there’s a lot of “unknown” that people are nervous about when it comes to this Auburn squad. Their closed door scrimmage against Tulane didn’t go well but that’s to be expected when there are so many new faces on the roster (Plus Tulane is going to be greatly improved this year). The exhibition game was of course against a weak D2 opponent but it gave this players another opportunity to gel. Decimeon Bowers is a 6’7 260lb beast that Milwaukee just doesn’t have a physical answer for. Add in the athletic scoring ability of Niagara transfer Antoine Mason and returning star KT Harrell, and Auburn has quite a few weapons at it’s disposal that it was greatly lacking last year. Even the bench has been bolstered with the addition of KC Ross Miller from NM St.
Milwaukee on the other hand lost their SG to graduation (who shot almost 35% on 195 3′s) and their Center. Their other deep threat Austin Arians returns, we think his effectiveness will be hampered by the loss of Jordan Aaron. The Panther bench was pretty ineffective last year so it remains to be seen how much they improved and how impactful a couple of the new starters will be.
Auburns arena will be hoping (and if you haven’t seen the new one, it’s GORGEOUS). Pearl has this team and it’s fans believing that a special season will come sooner rather than later. If the Tigers can cleanup the mistakes they made in their closed door game against Tulane, they should be able to run the floor effectively with their new 1-2 combo of Mason and Harrell, which in turn will free up Bowers to take over the paint.
Auburn rolls here 79-63
