Regarding sedation during a colonoscopy

I should explain how it came about I ended up having one without any drugs. I was scheduled originally for a Sigmoidoscopy which is no where near as invasive as a complete colonoscopy at The VA Hospital in Providence Rhode Island in 2006. Being a Vietnam Vet I get all my medical treatment free in the US at VA Hospitals and clinics.

A Sigmoidoscopy is the minimally invasive medical examination of the large intestine from the rectum through the last part of the colon. There are two types of sigmoidoscopy, flexible sigmoidoscopy, which uses a flexible endoscope, and rigid sigmoidoscopy, which uses a rigid device. Flexible sigmoidoscopy is generally the preferred procedure. A sigmoidoscopy is a very effective screening tool. A sigmoidoscopy is similar but not the same as a colonoscopy. A Sigmoidoscopy only examines up to the sigmoid, the most distal part of the colon, while colonoscopy examines the whole large bowel.

Since I tolerated the sigmoidoscopy so well (didn't complain) the doctor asked if he could change the procedure on the fly to a complete colonoscopy and I agreed. I am not going to say it was any fun but it really in my case didn't hurt much because I only had one very small polyp that they clipped off the intestine wall.

I don't advise anyone to try it without the sedation as they might end up with a lot more soft tissue being cut and that hurts.

When I was done the nurse said I was the only person she ever saw have a complete colonoscopy without some kind of sedation.

When the president has one he is put under and during that time the Vice President is actually acting President of the Nation.

Bottom line my advice to anyone having the procedure is to take whatever medicine your doctor recommends before the procedure.

so they basically just stick it up your asshole right?

is it painful? i assume they numb you.

this can't be nothing compared to a spinal tap.

they can do a virtual colonoscopy now.
the only major drawbacks with are that
they can not remove anything from the
intestine during that procedure as the
virtual does not actually enter ones body
and the virtual shows such detail that
it will indicate certain areas might be a problem
with the only way of resolving that issue
is with the real colonoscopy. also the
prep for both real and virtual is brutal.

The pain factor depends on the skill of the doctor and the shape and size of your colon. I had a flex sigmoidoscopy many years ago unsedated and it hurt like hell. They occasionally need to blow air through the scope to properly maneuver it and get a good view of your colon. If they blow enough air through that scope and need to take a sharp enough angle, you are going to feel it even if no polyps are removed. On a humorous note, once the doctor had gone as far as he could with the scope, he said to me "You know there's no charge for putting this thing IN."

I've had two colonoscopies since then and had no problems getting knocked out. The way it was explained to me is that there is over a 98% cure rate if you get a colonoscopy and almost a 100% mortality rate if left untreated. So unless you are completely confident that you know the causes of colon cancer and that those causes do not apply to you, getting a colonoscopy is a no brainer.

Anyone in their 20s now probably will never have to have colonoscopy as medicne evolves less invasive procedures are always replacing the current tests and treatments. In 25 years they will probably have virtual colonoscopy machines that do the work somehow that a real scope does now..

Under sedation the colonoscope is passed through the colon and any polyps removed. The picture shows one of the scopes with a biopsy forceps coming out the tip of the scope. This examination is advised for everyone over the age of 50 every five years for the detection and prevention of colon cancer.

I call it the "Katie Cam" named after Katie Couric who had her colonoscopy televised on national tv.

My dad had colon cancer. About a year ago I noticed I was constantly bloated and every time I took a shit my terds were pensil thin. I thought nothing of it but after a month or so I googled the symptoms which included fatigue and it all pointed to colon cancer. I thought I had the fuck'n big C. I would have laid 5-1 that I had it especially considering it is a highly hereditary disease. I went to the doc and it took him about 90 seconds to schedule me for a colonoscopy. I couldnt sleep for weeks and I even called the doc and asked if they could schedule my colonoscopy sooner. I was so paranoid I thought it was already spreading to my lungs. The night before your stuck on the toilet. everything else was easy they even gave me some unreal drugs that had me lauphing and cracking jokes with the nurses. They removed 1 polyp (polyps grow in the intestine and can eventually turn cancerous, I think) but other than that he said I should be all right just to ease up on the coffee and alcohol. I have to do it again every 5 yrs for the rest of my life. If your familly has a history you should get it done regardless by the time you are 40. I was 31. the night before sucks but thanks to the drugs the day of was actually enjoyable. No pain at all.

Just think after this experience you will be considered bisexual. Congrats!

The reason why a colonoscopy is so great at detecting colon cancer is because colon cancer is very slow growing. It starts as a polyp acquires a few mutations and slowly grows until it invades. Not all polyps are considered precancerous. The two polyps that are precancerous and require more frequent screening are tubular adenomas and serrated adenomas. If you have one of those two, you should be watched a little more cloesly.
Hyperplastic polyps are the best of all to have, if you were to have a colon polyp and are not precancerous.
Thank you google for the definition of bisexual.

No Truer Words Were Ever Spoken

Like hooking a faucet up to your ass.

I found the barium enema worse than the colonoscopy.

I've had 3 colonoscopies, only sedated once. The prep w/the (as I Call it) Holly-go-litely, is a bitch. But nothing compares to the enema. My buddy asked me after what it was like. I said "imagine lying on pavement and someone sticking a hose up your ass and telling you "now hold it" terrible. As far as leading a healthy life, how many do 100%? Many have lung cancer who NEVER smoked. There are many reasons for any cancer to start. GET ONE!!!!

:103631605Colonoscopy a breeze-- Drugs were given and from then on I dont recall a thing. Now just waiting for the biopsy resuts. DR took only one biopsy so I am pretty confident that the resuts will be negatve for anything serious. Also found alot of diverticulosis-- Glad it is over! As soon as those labs come back with good news I will be quite relievd. I suggest anyone considering this test whom is apprehensive--go for it. Prep horrible but actual test not so bad--no memorie of it at all!! Thanks again to all for your wisdom and encouragement and good luck to all:103631605:103631605

I'm 57 years old. I've had stomach problems for about the last 30 years. I was so petrified that I had colon cancer that I didn't think I'd ever bring myself to the doctor to have a colonoscopy. I figured I'd waited to long and I was toast. Needless to say I was a complete idiot. They found a couple of polyps and I'll have to go back in 5 years. Once they give you the drugs, you don't remember a thing. You can have colon cancer and be symptom free so IMO it's a must have test.

My old man waited until he was 60 to get one. By that time he was already Stage 3 Cancer. They removed part of his intestines but thankfully he doesn't have to have a bag.
After all the Chemo and meds 5 years later he's cancer free. Probably because he's such a stubborn son of a gun that even the cancer didn't want anything to do with him.
