TAMPA -- As their training camp came to a close, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers were dealt an unexpected injury to rookie DE Dewayne White.
White, it seems, woke in the dorms at the training facility at roughly 4 in the morning on Wednesday, and was extremely thirsty. So, he took the elevator down three floors, and sauntered toward the glow of the soda machine, where he was going to buy a lemonade. That's when things took a turn for the worse.
"All of a sudden, I've put in my buck and I get my Minute Maid and I'm reaching for my quarter in change - yeah, that's right, 75 cents for a soda - and I'm about to grab the soda when I hear this voice behind me say, 'Hello, Dewayne.'
"Scared the shit out me," White said. "I had no clue someone was even behind me. I turned around so quickly that I caught my finger on the change dispenser and broke it. Now I'm out for six weeks."
The voice came from Tampa Bay Head Coach Jon Gruden, who was simply still awake at 4 am, wandering the halls. "Coach is scary, man," White continued. "In the weird glow of the soda machine, smiling like that, those eyes, man. Those ****ing eyes. He didn't even seem upset that I was hurt. He just sort of looked at me, and then he said, 'That looks good, I think I'll have a Minute Maid as well.'"
