Georgia

Expectations are running high in Athens these days and much of the excitement concerns a totally new defensive coaching staff. New defensive coordinator has been a member of a national championship team four of the past five years (Florida State and Alabama). Pruitt and his new assistants have flipped the emphasis from complicated NFL type schemes under former defensive coordinator Todd Granthan to one more simple. Pruitt also made it clear every position was open and the best player regardless of experience who could help the team win would play. It's obvious Pruitt is not afraid of youth because he played three freshman in Florida State's secondary last year. He wants discipline players who know what to do in all situations, recardless if freshman or senior. Look for Georgia to have a strong defense this season my friends.

Only two running backs have won the Heisman Trophy since 2000; and one of those (USC's Reggie Bush) was forced to give his back. If a running back is going to break out in 2014, Georgia's Todd Gurley is a strong candidate. The junior has rushed for 2,374 yards and 27 touchdowns during his two years at Georgia, despite playing hurt most of last season where he missed three games with an ankle injury. Gurley can make a case for being the top running back in the SEC and the country. According to Vegas Insider, he's fourth on odds boards to win the Heisman at 9-1, and is tops on the board among running backs.

Wide receiver Uriah Lemay has decided to transfer. He was one of four Bulldog players arrested in March and charged with illegal check-cashing. Lemay, from Matthews, North Carolina, redshirted in 2013, his first year at Georgia. The four players were charged with receiving double payments for checks of $71.00 issued by the athletic department.

Six tight ends who have played for Mark Richt at Georgia have been drafted by the NFL. Whether there are more pro prospects coming through the pipeline at the position remains to be seen. Georgia ended the spring with Quayvon Hicks, a fullback last season, as the top tight end followed by a walk-on and a converted tackle. That will all change when starter Jay Rome (6-6, 258) returns this fall from off-season foot surgery and Jordan Davis returns from a bad knee. Georgia also will have two TE recruits who will join the team this summer.

Sidenote: Mark Richt is 52-9 straight up verses non-conference opponents, including 36-1 "Between the Hedges."

SEC Spring Meetings

Autonomy will be the hot topic when the SEC officials, coaches and athletic directors gather next week in Destin, Florida, for their spring meetings. SEC commissioner Mike Slive said this week the SEC wants to ensure that the five biggest football conferences can decide how their own legislative process works in many areas affecting their athletes. They're seeking decision-making powers in funding the full cost of scholarships, handling health care and other areas involving their athletes. Other changes under consideration include providing money for families to travel to NCAA tournaments, more resources for academic and career counseling and creating mandatory break times from sports and overhauling transfer rules. Pac-12 university presidents sent a letter to the other 53 presidents at the five conferences last week formalizing their proposals for sweeping changes that appear to be in line with what their major-conference peers have been supporting. The bid for autonomy among the Big 5 conferences seems to be growing.

New Schedules

The SEC released the non-divisional football schedule through 2025 this week and all are not happy. Alabama and South Carolina won't meet again until 2019. Alabama won't at Florida until 2021. Texas A&M doesn't come to Tennessee until 2025. LSU doesn't go back to Georgia until 2023. Its like these teams aren't even in the same conference. The culprits are (A) the stubborn avoidance of a nine-game conference schedule and (B) the 6-1-1 format. That means six games, or one each, against a "permanent" non-divisional opponent plus one game against a rotating non-divisional opponent. The "permanent partner" concept protects such non-divisional games as Georgia-Auburn and Alabama-Tennessee. The problem is it does so at the expense of most everyone else.

The easy answer would be to follow the example set by the Pac 12, Big 12 and (soon) the Big 10 will adopt a nine-game conference schedule. Then teams could play six games inside the division, one regular non-divisional foe and two rotating divisional foes.

Sidenote: Father and son talking.

Son: "Dad, did you ever play Alabama in college?"
Dad: "No, we didn't."
Son: "But I thought you played football in the SEC."
Dad: "I played football in the SEC East."

Mack, you and I are too damn old not to enjoy a laugh every now and then. I love the good, knowledgeable guys up north who post here on the RX CFB Forum. I also respect northern football...ain't that stupid.

Mack, had the time of my life today. Took six young kids (4 to 10 years) up to the lake for a little fishing. They caught over 50 perch and all I did was bate the hook (worms). Amazing how a seven year old girl won't touch a worm but will grab that little fish with no fear and take it off the hook. All the fish together wouldn't have fed two people....but I'm still grinning just thinking about the fun they had.

2014 Quarterbacks

Below is a list of each team's quarterback situation going into the coming season. As you can see, there is a lot of inexperience in the SEC at the quarterback position. Only Auburn, Ole Miss and Arkansas have starters who played the entire 2013 season.

1. Auburn - Nick Marshall - (Second year starter)
2. Ole Miss - Bo Wallace - (Third year starter)
3. Arkansas - Brandon Allen - (Second year starter)
4. Miss State - Dak Prescott - (First year starter with some experience)
5. Florida - Jeff Driskel - (Second year starter who was injured last year)
6. South Carolina - Dylan Thompson - (First year starter with some experience)
7. Georgia - Hudson Mason - (First year starter, 5th year senior)
8. Missouri - Matty Mauk - (First year starter with some experience)
9. Alabama - Jacob Coker, Blake Sims, Cooper Bateman - (Coker, FSU transfer expected to start...1st year starter)
10. LSU - Brandon Harris or Anthony Jennings - (First year starter)
11. Tennessee - Justin Worley or Joshua Dobbs - (Worley has starting experience)
12. Texas A&M - Kyle Allen or Kenny Hill - (First year starter)
11. Kentucky - Maxwell Smith or Pat Towles - (Smith has some starting experience)
12. Vanderbilt - Patton Robinette or Steven Rivers - (Rivers transferred from LSU...1st year starter)

Compared to last year, the SEC can be considered young/inexperienced at the all important quarterback position. Last season's class of Johnny Manziel, Aaron Murray, AJ McCarron, Zack Mettenberger, Conner Shaw and James Franklin represented the league in a big way.

Vanderbilt

On January 17, 2014, Vanderbilt hired Derek Mason as its new head football coach, succeeding James Franklin who left to become head coach at Penn State. Mason will take over a Vandy team that just lost the most successful class of football players in modern Commodore history. Mason and his all new staff will have a lot of talent to replace entering the 2014 season. He will have either nine or ten starters back but only three regulars return on defense. He will also have to find a new starting quarterback and a couple of new wide receivers. Expect Vanderbilt to have their first losing season in three years.

Mason does inherit a favorable schedule with eight home games...the Ole Miss game will be played at LP Field (home of Titans), but will be considered a home game. Their first four games are at home. Vanderbilt plays at Kentucky, at Georgia, at Missouri and at Mississippi State for their road games. All four of the non-conference games will be at home against Temple, UMass, Charleston Southern and Old Dominion. Favorable schedule or not, this year's football team is headed for a difficult season. I have them winning their non-conference games and losing all SEC contest for a 4-8 season. If you can't play solid defense in the SEC, you don't win! Even with Mason's experience as defensive coordinator at Stanford, he just doesn't have the players to line up week in and week out in the toughass SEC.

expecting a big-time breakout season from Prescott

took a peek at the 2015 commitments and Derek Mason better pick things up. You can't survive in the SEC getting out-recruited by East Carolina and Miami (OH), not after a year you barely cracked the top 50. They could be back to 2-3 win seasons in no time...lucky they have Old Dominion, Temple, Umass, and Charlie Southern scheduled this year

RT, Mason has no idea what he's gotten into........the SEC will be like a foreign country to him and his coaching staff.

Never understood the hire....well guess I do but don't care to go into it here in this thread.

He will be short term and Vandy will be searching for another coach like James Franklin.

Agree Roll Tide. Prescott is a Tebow type quarterback...let's see what Mullen can accomplish with him as he tutored Tebow during his Florida days. Given: Not the same supporting staff...but the kid is a player.

no doubt there has to be some head scratching going on with the vandy hire. guy is from Arizona, played at No Arizona, never coached in the southeast so has no ties to HS coaches, and has never been a head coach. must have been one hell of an interviewer though

...got a kick out of this article today since Will's Gators lost to FCS Geo Southern last year. yeah, i guess he would like Florida to stop scheduling these opponents :)

DESTIN — UF coach Will Muschamp said he would like to see the Gators stop scheduling Football Championship Subdivision opponents in the future.
UF athletic director Jeremy Foley said it is a nice idea in theory, but the art of building a college football schedule isn’t that simple.
While games against lower-division competition hurt a team’s strength of schedule and lack fan appeal, Foley said those games have been necessary ever since the NCAA expanded the college football schedule to 12 games prior to the 2006 season.
“I understand what Will's saying: In a perfect world, you play all D-I schools,” Foley said on Tuesday at the SEC Spring Meetings in Destin. “But also you have to have 12 opponents. But he has the right to weigh in and give that opinion. We'll certainly work through that together.”

I was talking about this with my brother yesterday. I understand where that lunatic is coming from, but so many of the FCS schools would be screwed if the D-I schools quit scheduling them. Those schools rely on the paychecks from those games, otherwise they probably couldn't make budget. Hell, the FCS guys love it too getting to play in the big time venues.

These FCS schools "could" be the wave of the future depending on what happens.

If and when the big 5 breakaway happens , and if and when everybody goes to 9 game con skeds , the big boys might get leary of playing the Tulanes and Toledos and may start looking for the Norfolks and Cal Polys.

yep. georgia state built a weight room and practice field just on the money they gained from their trip to Ttown a few years ago. doubt they're getting that by traveling to Towson

[h=1]SEC has idea for early signing day[/h]

DESTIN, Fla. -- The SEC prefers the current recruiting signing period, but with "mounting interest" in an early signing day, the conference recommended it be the Monday after Thanksgiving, SEC commissioner Mike Slive said Wednesday.SEC coaches and athletic directors discussed the possibility of an early signing period during the league's spring meetings at the Sandestin Hilton.Slive and SEC executive associate commissioner Greg Sankey said that if there is an early signing period, the SEC prefers it on the Monday after Thanksgiving for one day only.[h=4]More from ESPN.com[/h]
aschoff_edward_m.jpg
The SEC wasn't a fan of the ACC's early signing proposal, but has its own proposal, Edward Aschoff writes. Story

The Conference Commissioners Association, which governs the signing date, meets in mid-June. The CCA would have to approve an early signing period. Slive admitted he hopes an early signing period is not on the agenda. Earlier this month, the ACC recommended an early signing day be on Aug. 1.If an early signing period is created, the traditional first Wednesday in February signing day would remain. Under the SEC proposal, the only high school prospects who would sign early would be ones not making official visits."There are varying opinions on what an early signing period would be," Slive said. "We would encourage to retain the current model."
Slive said that if there is an early signing day, it will create a "domino effect.""The first step is to retain the current model, and if there's a debate on an early signing day, we prefer this model [on the Monday after Thanksgiving]," Slive said. However, LSU coach Les Miles said an early signing period doesn't change "the dynamics of recruitment.""It doesn't change the recruiting calendar," Miles said. "You're really only after the guys who really want to come to your school. You're not trying to convince them.
"It's an early signing date and an opportunity that does not change the recruiting calendar. It's really the best of both worlds. ... It really is the best thing, it's the easiest thing. It's the most serving for the student-athlete."

Texas A&M

Will Texas A&M and rival Texas play a football game again? At the SEC meetings this week in Florida, Aggie head coach Kevin Sumlin said he believes the rivalry will be reignited eventually. The two programs have not played since Texas A&M left the Big 12 to join the SEC, and neither side has shown much interest in getting the game back together as non-conference opponents. But perhaps that is going to be changing soon. Texas athletic director Steve Patterson said in April a series with Texas A&M is not something Texas will be focusing on anytime soon, but new football coach Charlie Strong has been singing a slightly different tune. Strong said he would like to play Texas A&M, and feels doing so on a neutral field would be the best possible solution to make it happen. I believe the two old rivals will play again and maybe sooner than later. The problem is neither school needs the other to survive or fullfil any requirements right now. Sure, it would be great for fans and would add a great game to schedule with state/conference bragging rights on the line but until the two schools need to play each other or fall in the same postseason pairing, we could be waiting for awhile. Sometime down the road fans are going to demand the two big Texas schools play each other...until that noise gets officials attention...we just wait while the two schools stare each other down.

The past six games between the Aggies and Longhorns have the series at 3-3.

2011: Horns 27-25
2010: Aggies 24-17
2009: Horns 49-39
2008: Horns 49-9
2007: Aggies 38-30
2006: Aggies 12-7

Sidenote: Twelve seats are left empty at Kyle Field to remember A&M community members who died in a 1999 bonfire accident.

Incoming Freshman to Watch

This list includes one freshman recruit from each team who could/may come in and contribute during their first year. Several of the players will be starters as the season progresses.

Alabama: Tony Brown - CB (5 star recruit from Texas, early enrollee, will play a lot this season)
Arkansas: Bijhon Jackson - DT (4 star recruit who has chance to contribute, 6-2, 335, Hogs need big run stopper)
Auburn: Roc Thomas - RB (5 star recruit who will get plenty of playing time, being compared to Tre Mason)
Florida: Jalen Tabor - S (5 star recruit who Muschamp flipped from Arizona)
Georgia: Lorenzo Carter - DE/LB (5 star who was the top rated player in Georgia)
Kentucky: Drew Barker - QB (4 star who was rated the 6th best pro-style passer)
LSU: Leonard Fournette - RB (5 star who will start for the Tigers, great prospect)
Ole Miss: Markell Pack - WR (4 star who chose Rebs over Alabama and FSU)
Miss State: Jemoral Graham - Ath (4 star who can play either offense or defense)
Missouri: Nate Brown - WR (4 star who chose Tigers over Georgia and S. Carolina)
S. Carolina: Bryon Williams - LB (4 star rated No. 8 outside LB in the country)
Tennessee: Josh Malone - WR (4 star rated No. 5 wideout in country)
Texas A&M: Kyle Allen - QB (5 star rated No. 1 QB in country...could be early starter)
Vanderbilt: Nifae Lealac - DE (4 star from California)

I'm sure there are other freshman who could come in an contribute/start early but the guys above look to have the best chance.

If Florida plays in the Gator Bowl or Capital One I'll be very happy. That means at least 8 wins.....

Regarding the FCS opponents; Foley (UF's AD) stated that Muschamp is just speaking his opinion...but that doesn't mean UF won't schedule any future FCS opponents.

The problem is that it's easier said than done. There aren't a bunch of lower level D1 schools that are willing to take 1-game contracts to take a beating from a FBS school. EVERY D1 school is looking for those opponents, and there are only so many to go around. The 12th game created this situation. It's easy to say, "schedule a home and home w/ Michigan" (or other big school). But losing a home game every other year is costly...not only to the school's athletic budget but to the community. Imagine if you own an apparal store or bar near the stadium and you lose 1 of 7 home games. The cost to the community (hotels, restuarants, apparal stores, bars, etc) is invaluable.
