Georgia
Expectations are running high in Athens these days and much of the excitement concerns a totally new defensive coaching staff. New defensive coordinator has been a member of a national championship team four of the past five years (Florida State and Alabama). Pruitt and his new assistants have flipped the emphasis from complicated NFL type schemes under former defensive coordinator Todd Granthan to one more simple. Pruitt also made it clear every position was open and the best player regardless of experience who could help the team win would play. It's obvious Pruitt is not afraid of youth because he played three freshman in Florida State's secondary last year. He wants discipline players who know what to do in all situations, recardless if freshman or senior. Look for Georgia to have a strong defense this season my friends.
Only two running backs have won the Heisman Trophy since 2000; and one of those (USC's Reggie Bush) was forced to give his back. If a running back is going to break out in 2014, Georgia's Todd Gurley is a strong candidate. The junior has rushed for 2,374 yards and 27 touchdowns during his two years at Georgia, despite playing hurt most of last season where he missed three games with an ankle injury. Gurley can make a case for being the top running back in the SEC and the country. According to Vegas Insider, he's fourth on odds boards to win the Heisman at 9-1, and is tops on the board among running backs.
Wide receiver Uriah Lemay has decided to transfer. He was one of four Bulldog players arrested in March and charged with illegal check-cashing. Lemay, from Matthews, North Carolina, redshirted in 2013, his first year at Georgia. The four players were charged with receiving double payments for checks of $71.00 issued by the athletic department.
Six tight ends who have played for Mark Richt at Georgia have been drafted by the NFL. Whether there are more pro prospects coming through the pipeline at the position remains to be seen. Georgia ended the spring with Quayvon Hicks, a fullback last season, as the top tight end followed by a walk-on and a converted tackle. That will all change when starter Jay Rome (6-6, 258) returns this fall from off-season foot surgery and Jordan Davis returns from a bad knee. Georgia also will have two TE recruits who will join the team this summer.
Sidenote: Mark Richt is 52-9 straight up verses non-conference opponents, including 36-1 "Between the Hedges."
