Hands down one of the most intense, jaw dropping opening scenes of any movie i've ever scene in my life. I just watched it again because its on HBO. I can not imagine going through anything like that in my life. If you have never scene it, it will make you cringe at what our soldiers went through.

with my limited vocabulary i'm unable to put into words the bravery and guts it must have taken to undertake the battle knowing full well what your likely fate was to be, a debt so great it will never be repaid to those brave men.

That beach drop scene doesn't allow you to breathe for about 15 minutes.

My father (86 yrs old) was right in the middle of the invasion. I took him over to France on his 80th birthday, and he still has flashbacks about the buddies he lost.

Can you imagine what it was like for these guys? My father was in WWII and he wouldn't talk about it. Funny thing was, he was a bookie before the war, so they made him in charge of figuring out the coordinates in regards to launching shells because he was good with numbers.

One thing I never understood in regard to them landing on the beach was, they never had any air support whatsoever. Why wouldn't they clear it out before hand?

Fat Tony, to this day, my father despises the French. After Normandy, he spent 3 years in France building bridges and as he says, "protecting those pussies." He won't eat a "french" fry or drink Grey Goose vodka.

That's funny, same with my dad. He was a pretty passive guy but not when it came to the French.

Wasn't much to clear. Most of the Germans were in fortified bunkers, and those were getting hit from the sea. Navy pounded the beaches for a few hours preinvasion. Plus, with the invasion forces hitting the beaches, there would have been more friendlies killed than Nazis. (Air support back then was carpet bombing)

My stomach was tied up in knots for first 10 min. of movie and I almost bailed. Did you notice that every war movie since has copped it's style and audio techniques? Can't blame them. Have only seen SPR once and I'm waiting for right day to watch again, just incredible movie!

Scared shitless would be a serious understatement if I were in a landing craft.

Kick ass movie and what a collection of actors. From Hanks, Damon, to Vin Disel. The first 10 mins just left me speechless.

If you like this kind of war films but with more international flavor, you should check out TaeGukGi: The Brotherhood of War. It's another powerful war film that transcend culture.

Definitely the best scene in any movie. Intense as hell. Rest of the movie was almost a letdown, don't get me wrong it's a good flick but compared to the opening anything would be a letdown.
