(975) HOUSTON ASTROS at (976) CLEVELAND INDIANS

Take: (975) HOUSTON ASTROS +145

You can mark me down as being bullish on Danny Salazar. The Cleveland righty has great stuff, and if he can stay healthy, there’s a real expectation here that he’s going to break out at some point. But Salazar remains a model of inconsistency at the present time. The problem seems to be an inability to maintain his command on a regular basis. Salazar has done better in this regard lately. But he’s still prone to high pitch counts and once he hits the wall, that’s pretty much curtains for Salazar. So despite his top of the rotation potential, Salazar remains very much a work in progress.

Collin McHugh, on the other hand, seems to have arrived. Throw out the subpar W/L record. McHugh has been much better than that, and as I said last Sunday when I backed McHugh against the Red Sox, I really feel as though he’s now the ace on this Houston staff. The key for McHugh has been his mastering the changeup. He’s getting a huge differential between his fastball and the change and a load of swings and misses in the process.

From a team perspective, the Indians are clearly the better entry and they can be rude to righties when playing at home. As for the Astros, they’re still a lousy team and picking the right spots to give them a roll is a challenge. But the good news on that front is that Houston is on one of its good rolls right now. They’re on a modest 5-2 run, and it’s worth noting that the Astros have been hitting very well for some time now. So the ‘Stros are not in pushover mode presently, and that means it’s not a bad time to give them a longer look than usual.

The Indians are still hanging in as far as the playoff chase goes. They’re a manageable five games out of the second wild card, which means that one hot streak could get them right into the mix. But that’s also the problem, as this team just hasn’t been good enough to put any distance between themselves and the .500 plateau.

The Tribe rates the favorite’s role this evening. They play well at home and they have the ability to do a number on right handers. But I also see them being overpriced given McHugh’s stellar form, which has actually been amazing all season on the road. This looks like solid value with the game being priced this high, and I’m going to align myself within the Astros this time.

Comp MLB Pick for Saturday, August 23, 2014: 8:10 PM EST

(961) SAN DIEGO PADRES VS (962) ARIZONA DIAMONDBACKS

Take: (962) ARIZONA DIAMONDBACKS

Reason: Your free pick for Saturday, August 23rd, 2014, comes in baseball as San Diego and the Diamondbacks meet in Arizona. Vidal Nuno goes for Arizona and he's not pitched as bad as his record, allowing 2 runs in each of his last two starts. Nuno did not record a decision Monday against the Nationals as he pitched seven innings and allowed two runs, five hits and two walks to go along with seven strikeouts. In fact he's allowed 2 runs or less in 3 of is last four starts. The Diamondbacks are 6-1 in their last 7 home games vs. a team with a losing record and faces the worst offensive team in baseball. San Diego is 30th in runs, batting average, on base percentage and slugging. San Diego starter Andrew Cashner has been battling some shoulder soreness and his ERA goes from 1.39 at home to 3.77 on the road! The Padres are 1-4 in Cashner's last 5 road starts, plus 4-9 on the road games against a left-handed starter. And the Padres are 5-11 in their last 16 road games vs. a team with a losing record. Play Arizona!

RECOMMENDED CHOICES

The Walker Group Picks

# 1 PROUD STEP 7/2

# 7 ON DOWN THE ROAD 3/1

# 5 E BAR WAY 4/1

PROUD STEP is my choice. Trainer has sharp win rate (20 percent) at this distance and surface. Must be given a shot based on the strong Equibase Speed Figure recorded in the last race. ON DOWN THE ROAD - Has to be considered a solid contender on earnings per start at the distance/surface alone. Must be used in the exotic wagers. E BAR WAY - Has been racing very well and has among the best speed in the race for today's distance. Horses who have been prepared to race at this distance and surface by Marr have shown very solid results as of late.

RECOMMENDED CHOICES

The Walker Group Picks

# 5 COCKTAILS WITH DAN 5/2

# 9 PIANO MAN TED 3/1

# 10 PRETTY MR. D 9/2

I've got to go with COCKTAILS WITH DAN. He has to be given a shot given the very strong speed numbers. Win percentage one of the strongest in this field. Ran a sharp last race. PIANO MAN TED - Put up a respectable speed fig last time out. PRETTY MR. D - Must be considered here on the basis of the numbers in the speed department alone.

Golden Gate - Race #4 - Post: 3:22pm - Maiden Claiming - 8.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $13,000 Class Rating: 66

#7 HUGSFORHENNYHALL (ML=8/1)
#5 HULA GIRL (ML=2/1)
#6 SANDY'S JOURNEY (ML=3/1)

HUGSFORHENNYHALL - Jock jumped on this filly's back for the 1st attempt on Jul 17th. Should 'know' the animal even better in this race. This filly has higher odds on the morning line than the other entrant from the stable of Moger. Better be wary of this angle. HULA GIRL - When 'Russell Muscle' and Sherman are put together on horses the win percent has been tremendous at 34. While the finish was disappointing, this beautiful animal made a good stretch move last time out at Del Mar. Has to do better today. SANDY'S JOURNEY - This filly's last speed fig earned on July 17th is at the top in last race speed figures. Rider hops up aboard after getting to know the race horse by riding last out. That's always a big time angle. This entrant earns a lot of money per race. I believe she will boost the lifetime bankroll in this event. Lasix can take some getting used to, especially for a filly. They usually hit stride the 2nd time using it, like we have with this horse.

Vulnerable Contenders: #4 ZIP BABY (ML=5/2), #1 HOTSOUTHERNBREEZE (ML=8/1),

HOTSOUTHERNBREEZE - Hasn't been close at all recently. When examining today's class rating, she will have to notch a better speed fig than last time around the track to compete in this dirt route.

Penn National - Race #1 - Post: 6:00pm - Claiming - 6.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $10,500 Class Rating: 80

#4 SOUTHERN PARFAIT (ML=3/1)

SOUTHERN PARFAIT - Multiple wins over the surface right here at Penn National. Maybe, another trip to the winner's circle today. Popular angle - 3rd or 4th start after a vacation generally leads to a big effort. Should run a big one here. Racing at a similar level as last race on August 1st at Penn National. I think Beattie has found a good spot for her, and I like her chances right here in this race. Sub-par effort in the last race at Penn National was due to the off-going (she finished sixth). I'd expect a better race right here on a fast track.

Vulnerable Contenders: #3 SPEEDWAY MONKEY (ML=3/2), #5 ARSONESS (ML=5/2), #6 TALES OF PARADISE (ML=6/1),

SPEEDWAY MONKEY - Finished fifth last time out. Would have to get better to hit the board in today's event. Difficult to wager on any horse in a sprint affair if she hasn't finished in the money in a sprint in the last couple of months. ARSONESS - Finished second in her most recent performance with a somewhat easily forgotten speed fig. When I look at today's class rating, it would take an improved performance to prove victorious after that in this group. TALES OF PARADISE - Could be tough for this horse to beat this field off of that last speed rating. Not likely to improve enough to run a figure close to today's class figure, so put her on the likely underlays list.

Bet on #4 SOUTHERN PARFAIT to win if we can get at least 1/1 odds

The seven-furlong race for 3-year-olds was first run in 1984 and is named for Craig F. Cullinan, Jr.'s colt of the same name. Purchased as a yearling in 1971 for $72,000 at the Keeneland summer sales, the son of Round Table won 11 of 28 starts including the Fall Highweight and the Carter Stakes as a 4-year-old. Here in the 30th running of this Grade I stakes event, #8 COUP DE GRACE has turned in "POWER RUN PERFORMANCES" in four straight, including a trio of "POWER RUN WINS" being embedded in this recent streak of racing consistency. Jockey Rosie Napravnik has been in his irons on one previous occasion, posting a win, en route to a +185% return on investment in the process, and is back this afternoon for her 2nd ride, gunning for back-to-back "Circle Trips." #7 THE BIG BEAST has hit the board in each of his four career starts to date, including back-to-back "POWER RUN WINS" in his last two "adventures."

# 6 CHAPTER 5/1

# 3 MY BRIGHT PENNY 5/2

# 1 POST HASTE 9/2

CHAPTER looks great to best this bunch. The consortium knows that speed is the key in harness racing. This race horse will unlock our way to a nice victory. This race horse looks tough considering the high class numbers. Not a good idea to throw out of any exotics. Should be in the hunt again in here, looking to add to that already high lifetime winning percent. MY BRIGHT PENNY - Unquestionably the class of the pack with an average rating of 71. A nice choice. Could beat this field, just look at the TrackMaster Speed Rating - 71 - from her most recent effort. POST HASTE - Getting a good thought about this colt. Could surprise in here.

# 4 BOUNCING BAX 2/1

# 5 CANADIAN JUSTICE 7/2

# 2 HIGHLAND YANKEE 6/1

BOUNCING BAX looks really good to best this grouping. Worth taking a close look at here based on the markings in the TrackMaster SR department alone. A formidable class horse should not be be forgotten. With an average class number of 91 all signs say this is the one to beat. Should be considered for this one if only for the competitive TrackMaster speed fig achieved in the most recent affair. CANADIAN JUSTICE - Long knows this standardbred well. Amazing in the money record when starting as a team. Comp pace figs show this contender has what it takes to score in this one. HIGHLAND YANKEE - Should compete competently in this race as his style of running fits well in this bunch.

At the Gate - Saturday
By Mike Dempsey

The track surface at Saratoga was wet and we were off the turf again on Friday, but the weather looks promising for Travers Day, with a 14-race card on tap on Saturday with an early post time of 11:35 a.m. ET.

The marquee event is the Grade 1 $1.25 million Travers Stakes which drew a competitive field of 10 including Haskell Invitational (G1) winner Bayern and Belmont Stakes (G1) winner Tonalist.

There are a couple of supporting Grade 1 races, the $500,000 King’s Bishop for three-year-olds and the $500,000 Ballerina for fillies and mares. The Ballerina is a Breeders’ Cup “Win and You’re In” race for the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint.

The stakes action starts in the seventh race with the Grade 2, $250,000 Ballston Spa for fillies and mares going 1 1/16 miles on the inner turf, which figures to be less than firm after we received rain the last couple of days.

The Ballerina and Travers will be part of NBC Sports Network’s national telecast from 4:30 to 6 p.m. The Travers has a scheduled post time of 5:46 p.m.

There is also a Breeders’ Cup Challenge race at Del Mar on Saturday afternoon. A field of nine will go to the post in the Grade 2, $200,000 Del Mar Handicap at 1 3/8 miles on turf. The winner earns an automatic starting spot in the Breeders’ Cup Turf.

We have another big day on Sunday, which is Pacific Classic Day at Del Mar. The Grade 1, $1 million Pacific Classic features an intriguing matchup between the undefeated three-year-old Shared Belief and defending champion Game On Dude.

In addition, on Sunday it is Saratoga Showcase Day for New York breds. We have 11 races for state breds including six stakes with over $1 million in purses up for grabs.

My Best Plays for Saturday includes my 10 strongest plays from Del Mar and Saratoga including all of the stakes action.

Here is today’s opening race from Saratoga to get the day off to a good start:

SAR Race 1 Md Sp Wt (11:35 ET)
7 Liam's Map 5-2
5 Three Alarm Fire 3-1
8 Cosmic Gold 7-2
1 Prince Bernardini / 1a Hard to Handle 10-1

Analysis: Liam's Map debuts for the Pletcher barn that is 22% winners with first timers. The $800,000 Keeneland purchase is by Unbridled's Song (13% winners with debut runners) out of the stakes winner Miss Macy Sue ($880,915), who has dropped one foal to race, 0 for 1 Minnie Macy. The colt debuts with lasix and has a series of sharp works on the morning tab including a near bullet drill out of the gate on Aug. 16. The barn is 5 for 27 (19%) with first timers at the meeting.

Three Alarm Fire pressed the early ape and finished gamely for the runner up spot in his debut, beaten 2 1/2 lengths while nearly six lengths clear of the rest of the field. The $140,000 Keeneland purchase has come back with five solid works since his debut for a barn that does not win a lot first time out. The winner of the race has to run back while the third place finisher came back to lose by a nose in his next start on July 31. The Albertrani trainee does not need to move forward much off his debut effort to win in this spot.

Wagering
WIN: #7 to win at 9-5 or better.
EX: 5,7 / 1,5,7,8
TRI: 5,7 / 1,5,7,8 / 1,2,5,7,8

Today’s Featured Race of the Day from Saratoga:

SAR Race 10 The King's Bishop G1 (4:33 ET)
7 The Big Beast 5-2
6 Fast Anna 6-1
2 Wildcat Red 4-1
8 Coup de Grace 2-1

Analysis: The Big Beast ran huge to beat Alw-1 foes in his first trip over the Spa main track, earning a 102 Beyer and drawing away to win by 6 1/4lengths. The colt looked just as impressive two back breaking his maiden in gate to wire fashion at Belmont Park in his third career start and second for the Tony D. barn. The colt has come back with a couple of quick works since his last outing and the trainer is really high on this colt. He owns a solid pace profile throughout and looks pried for his stakes debut.

Fast Anna set sharp early fractions and went gate to wire last out at Gulfstream Park over a wet track to beat Alw-2L foes in his first go against winners. The runner up in the race was Ponotos, who came back to beat $50,000 starter optional claimers in his next outing at Gulfstream Park by 10 1/4 lengths. The colt owns the edge in early and mid pace numbers and popped a bullet drill over the Spa main track here on Aug. 16. Johnny V. takes over from the seven-pound bug and this guy still appears to have a ton of upside.

Wildcat Red cuts back to seven furlongs after checking in third in the Haskell Invitational (G1) last out. He stumbled coming out of the gate and was in chase mode the entire trip behind Bayern. The cut back to one turn should suit this guy, who won the Hutcheson (G3) at seven furlongs back in February with a tracking trip and he should get a similar trip here. The colt always seems to fire, landing in the exacta in 8 of 10 trips with one of those misses coming in the Kentucky Derby (G1) where he had a terrible trip.

Wagering
WIN: #7 to win at 2-1 or better.
EX: 6,7 / 2,6,7,8
TRI: 6,7 / 2,6,7,8 / 1,2,6,7,8

Today’s Featured Race of the Day from Del Mar:

DMR Race 8 The Del Mar Handicap G2 (5:42 PT)
5 Bright Thought 6-1
10 Unbridled Command 12-1
11 Fire With Fire 7-2
4 Big John B 9-2

Analysis: Bright Thought came off a two month break last out in the restricted Wicker going a mile and the five-year-old made a mild late run to finish third in a decent effort. The extra ground here should suit as this guy is a Grade 2 winner at 1 1/2 miles. He has lost six in a row since taking that race at Santa Anita in March of '13 but I like the barn switch here to former Mike Mitchell assistant D'Amato who is 24% winners (with a +ROI) with newcomers to the barn. He fits here with his best and his 6-1 morning line looks fair enough to give him a good look here.

Unbridled Command adds blinkers after finishing evenly last out in a fifth place finish in the Eddie Read (G1) going nine furlongs. The five-year-old makes his third start off the layoff and has won half of his 12 career starts on turf including winning the Saranac (G3) at the Spa and the 1 1/4 mile Hollywood Derby (G1). The distance is the question mark but worth tossing in the mix here if he goes off near his 12-1 morning line.

Wagering
WIN: #5 to win at 4-1 or better.
EX: 5,10 / 4,5,10,11
TRI: 5,10 / 4,5,10,11 / 4,5,9,10,11

Live Longshots:
These are price plays for exotic players looking to find a couple of extra contenders to use in their trifecta and superfecta wagers. Or for those with smaller bankrolls, you might want to get in a small win-place wager.

Saratoga
R1: #1 Prince Bernardini / 1a Hard to Handle 10-1

Houston Astros vs. Cleveland Indians

1* Bonus Play Cleveland Indians

The Indians are a team I like to bounce back Saturday. They limited the Astros to just three hits in Friday's opener, but lost in large part because of some very poor play in the field. Not only did the Indians commit two errors, but they also had two runners thrown out in the same inning. I'll look for better play today.

The Tribe really dominated the Astros last year, winning six of seven games and outscoring them 41-15. Yesterday was the first time the clubs had met in 2014.

This Indians team typically does a good job at defending their home field. Only the A's and Angels have more victories at home among all American League teams.

Houston scored four of its runs in the ninth Friday, so it was a tie game heading into the final inning. Before that outburst, they had scored just 1 run in their last 17 innings. They have just seven hits total the last two games.

In his last five starts, Cleveland starter Danny Salazar has allowed three earned runs or less four times.

New York Mets vs. Los Angeles Dodgers

Saturday's Free MLB Pick Los Angeles Dodgers -158

This is a great spot to back the Dodgers at home against the Mets. Los Angeles will be sending out Zach Greinke, who will be well rested after having his turn skipped to give him a couple extra days off. Greinke has absolutely dominated the Mets over his career. He's got a 2.84 ERA and 0.947 WHIP over 3 starts.

Key Trends - LA is 15-6 in Greinke's last 21 starts vs a team with a losing record, 12-4 in his last 16 starts as a favorite of -151 to -200 and 20-6 in his last 26 starts at home.

System - All underdogs with a money line of +125 to +175 (NY METS) - below average hitting team (AVG <=.255) against a very good starting pitcher (ERA <=3.00) -NL, with a hot starting pitcher- WHIP <= 1.000 over his last 3 starts are 11-52 (17%) against the money line over the last 5 seasons. BET THE DODGERS -158!

NFLX Washington Redskins vs. Baltimore Ravens

Washington Redskins +3

Things are looking up in Washington with Mike Shanahan out and Jay Gruden taking over as head coach. Reports are already indicating that team chemistry is much better so far this year. Robert Griffin III seems to have a much better relationship with Gruden and that will go a long way in helping the Redskins win games.

RGIII looks healthy coming into the season. He has made positive plays, he just needs to work on not making that one big mistake. He can’t be forcing throws and throwing interceptions when the play breaks down. As long as he takes care of the ball (and himself), the ‘Skins will be just fine. I am also very high on backup QB Kirk Cousins. This guy is better than a handful of starters in the NFL, and Washington is fielding many trade inquiries as a result. Cousins is a big reason for this play, as I am very confident when he has the ball and I know that he will put his team in a good position to win the game outright. The Redskins are on a short week because they played Monday night, but short weeks don’t matter near as much in the preseason as they do when the games actually count.

The Ravens will be without their top 3 cornerbacks tonight. Jimmy Smith, Asa Jackson, and Lardarius Webb will all be sidelined. This obviously leaves Baltimore’s secondary very vulnerable to the big play form both Griffin and Cousins. The Ravens got off to a very slow start last week, and Joe Flacco didn’t look particularly sharp either. Count on the Redskins to at least cover in this one and possibly win the game outright. Take the Redskins.

NFLX Houston Texans vs. Denver Broncos

Bonus Play Houston Texans +7

Play On road teams like Houston, after allowing 14 points or less in last game, against opponent after leading in their previous game by 14 or more points at the half. In this case, teams like Houston are likely to have a carryover affect of their previous game, especially on defense. Conversely, the team they are playing built a big early lead playing football this time of year and might lack the intensity needed to win and cover the spread.
