White Sox +143

Tough night back from the All-Star break on Friday for the Chisox but willing to give the Pale Hose another look on Saturday at the Big A behind starter James Shields, who has turned around his season with three straight quality starts allowing just 5 runs in 20 1/3 IP (2.21 ERA) after a disasgrous start to his Chicago career last month.

White Sox at Angels

Take: Over

This is a good offensive park and Chicago has a bad starter going in James Shields (4-10, 5.43 ERA). Chicago is 6-2 over the total against a losing team, plus the over is 18-6-3 in the White Sox's last 27 Saturday games. LA has picked it up offensively and the Over is 9-2 in the Angels last 11 home games. Matt Shoemaker (4-9, 4.59 ERA) is no ace, giving up three earned runs on five hits and two walks over five-plus innings in Friday's 9-5 victory over the Orioles.

GAME: Texas Rangers (54-37) at Chicago Cubs (54-35)
DATE/TIME: Saturday, July 16 - 2:20 PM EST
WHERE: Wrigley Field, Chicago, Illinois
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Texas Rangers compiled the best record in the American League over the first half of the season in spite of a rash of injuries to their starting pitchers, and the Rangers will get one of their top arms back Saturday afternoon. Ace right-hander Yu Darvish is slated to come off the disabled list and make his first start since June 8 in the second of a three-game road clash with the Chicago Cubs.

Despite both teams’ recent struggles, the interleague clash remains a matchup of first-place teams with healthy cushions. The Rangers, who dropped nine of their last 12 games before the All-Star break, continued their woes in the first contest back Friday, losing 6-0 to Kyle Hendricks and the Cubs. Texas’ offense hopes to do more damage against right-hander Jason Hammel, who enjoys pitching at Wrigley Field, where he is 10-5 with a 3.30 ERA in 30 starts over the past three seasons. The Cubs have won two straight spanning the break following a rough patch of their own in which they dropped nine of 10 before ending the first half with a victory.
TV: 2:20 p.m. ET, FSN Southwest (Texas), ABC 7 (Chicago), MLB Network

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rangers RH Yu Darvish (2-0, 2.87 ERA) vs. Cubs RH Jason Hammel (7-5, 3.46)
Darvish is set to return from his second stint on the disabled list this season and make just his fourth start since returning from Tommy John surgery that cost him all of 2015. The 29-year-old has allowed three or fewer runs in all three of his outings, but he has yet to make it through six innings. Darvish will make his first road start of the season.
Hammel is winless over his last six starts dating to June 4, going 0-4 with a 5.94 ERA over that stretch. The 33-year-old pitched well in his final outing before the break, though, holding Atlanta to two runs and three hits over five innings in a no-decision after surrendering five home runs in his previous outing against the New York Mets. Hammel is 0-2 with a 4.91 ERA in five games (three starts) against the Rangers.

WALK-OFFS
1. Cubs 1B Anthony Rizzo is 17-for-40 with two home runs during a 10-game hitting streak and has hit safely in 21 of his last 22 contests.
2. Texas OF Ian Desmond has reached base in nine straight games and is 11-for-35 with four walks during that stretch.
3. The Cubs are 3-0 in interleague play this season and have won five straight against American League opponents dating to last year.

GAME: Boston Red Sox (50-38) at New York Yankees (44-45)
DATE/TIME: Saturday, July 16 - 4:05 PM EST
WHERE: Yankee Stadium, Bronx, New York
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Boston Red Sox got a boost before they even began play in the second half when news of a trade for All-Star left-hander Drew Pomeranz hit on Thursday. The Red Sox rode that wave to a win on Friday and will try to clinch a series win when they visit the rival New York Yankees for the second of a three-game series on Saturday.

Pomeranz is expected to join the team on Saturday and will make his first start on Wednesday at home against the San Francisco Giants, theoretically easing some of the burden on Boston’s beleaguered pitching staff. All-Star knuckleballer Steven Wright got the nod to open the second half on Friday and was strong through six innings while fellow All-Star Xander Bogaerts bashed a home run in the 5-3 triumph. The Yankees are teetering on the edge between buying and selling with the trade deadline approaching on Aug. 1 and dropped one game below .500 with Friday’s setback. Should the team decide to deal one or both of its veteran relievers – Aroldis Chapman and Andrew Miller – it might be able to lean on converted starter Nathan Eovaldi, who approached 100 mph with his fastball in a relief stint on Friday.

TV: 4:05 p.m. ET, Fox Sports 1, NESN (Boston), YES (New York)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Red Sox LH Eduardo Rodriguez (1-3, 8.59 ERA) vs. Yankees LH CC Sabathia (5-6, 3.77)

A strong effort from Rodriguez would immediately alleviate some of the concerns about the Boston staff. The 23-year-old was expected to be a top-of-the-rotation arm behind David Price before a knee injury derailed his spring training, but he struggled when he came off the disabled list and eventually was bounced back to the minors after getting ripped for nine runs on 11 hits in 2 2/3 innings at Tampa Bay on June 27. Rodriguez made the necessary adjustments in two starts at Triple-A, allowing a total of two runs and five hits in 10 innings.

Sabathia looked like he was turning back into the dominant pitcher the Yankees signed in 2009 with a 2.20 ERA through the middle of June, but a rough four-start stretch lowered expectations once again. The hefty veteran was ripped for 21 earned runs in 23 innings while going 0-2 in those four turns. Sabathia is seeing Boston for the first time in 2016 but was solid in three starts against the rival Red Sox last season, posting a 1-0 record with a 2.12 ERA.

WALK-OFFS

1. Boston announced the signing of its first-round draft pick, 17-year-old LHP Jason Groome.

2. Yankees 1B Mark Teixeira is 2-for-19 in his last five games, dropping his batting average to .189.

3. New York is once again entertaining the idea of using 40-year-old Alex Rodriguez at first base.

GAME: Toronto Blue Jays (51-41) at Oakland Athletics (39-51)
DATE/TIME: Saturday, July 16 - 4:05 PM EST
WHERE: Oakland Coliseum, Oakland, California
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

Stephen Vogt was left on the bench in Tuesday's All-Star Game and took out his frustrations on the visiting Toronto Blue Jays on Friday in the opener of the Oakland Athletics' 10-game homestand. Vogt and the Athletics look to built on their 8-7 comeback victory when they resume the three-game series Saturday afternoon.

Vogt, who was not used in the American League's All-Star victory, and Khris Davis both went 3-for-4 with a homer and three RBIs on Friday — with Vogt belting a tying solo shot in the fifth inning and a go-ahead RBI single two frames later. The disappointing setback dropped Toronto three games behind first-place Baltimore in the AL East and shrunk its lead for the second wild-card spot to one game over Houston. Six different players drove in a run for the Blue Jays on Friday — including former Athletic Josh Donaldson, whose RBI single capped a four-run fourth inning that gave Toronto a 7-3 lead. Devon Travis is riding an 11-game road hitting streak after going 2-for-3 in the series opener.

TV: 4:05 p.m. ET, Sportsnet, TVA (Toronto), CSN California (Oakland)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Blue Jays RH R.A. Dickey (7-9, 3.93 ERA) vs. Athletics RH Sonny Gray (3-8, 5.16)

Dickey ended the first half with back-to-back strong outings and has worked seven innings in each of his last three turns. The 41-year-old knuckleballer from Nashville limited Kansas City to two runs and five hits in a victory July 5 and gave up one run and five hits in a win over Detroit five days later. Dickey has had his problems with Oakland over his career, going 4-5 with one complete game and a 4.18 ERA in 18 games (14 starts).

Gray's winless streak reached an astounding 12 starts on July 6 when he suffered the loss at Minnesota despite allowing only one run in six innings. The 26-year-old, who also hails from Nashville, has yielded fewer than three runs in five of his last seven outings but has not notched a victory since April 22 at Toronto. Gray improved to 2-1 with a 2.67 ERA in four career turns against the Blue Jays with that triumph in which he gave up three runs and six hits over seven frames.

WALK-OFFS

1. Athletics INF Danny Valencia is 2-for-6 lifetime against Dickey, with both hits being home runs.

2. Toronto RHP Marco Estrada (back) is expected to be activated from the 15-day disabled list in time to make the start against Seattle on Friday.

3. Oakland INF Ryon Healy went 0-for-4 in his major league debut Friday after having his contract purchased from Nashville earlier in the day and OF Billy Burns was optioned to the Sounds while RHP Nick Tepesch was designated for assignment.

GAME: Houston Astros (49-41) at Seattle Mariners (45-45)
DATE/TIME: Saturday, July 16 - 4:10 PM EST
WHERE: Safeco Field, Seattle, Washington
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Houston Astros have climbed back into the playoff race following a dismal April, while the Seattle Mariners are trying to recapture their early-season magic. The American League West rivals continue their three-game series Saturday with the host Mariners looking to slow down the surging Astros, who have moved a season-high eight games over .500.

Houston improved to 32-13 since May 23 with Friday’s 7-3 victory and made news before the game with the reported signing of Cuban infielder Yulieski Gurriel to a five-year, $47.5 million contract. The 32-year-old Gurriel, who batted .335 in 15 professional seasons between Cuba and Japan, is expected to play second and third base and could be ready to join the major-league club in about three weeks. Houston has won five in a row against the Mariners, who were 30-21 at the end of May but have fallen 8 1/2 games behind first-place Texas in the AL West. Seattle eagerly is awaiting the return of ace Felix Hernandez (calf), who allowed one run over 5 2/3 innings in a rehab outing for Triple-A Tacoma on Friday and is scheduled to start for the Mariners next Wednesday.

TV: 4:10 p.m. ET, ROOT (Houston, Seattle)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Astros RH Lance McCullers (4-3, 3.79 ERA) vs. Mariners RH Hisashi Iwakuma (9-6, 4.25)

McCullers entered the All-Star break on a low note after yielding three runs and seven hits in a season-low four innings against Oakland on Saturday. While he continues to struggle with his command, the 22-year-old has recorded at least six strikeouts in nine consecutive starts dating back to May 20. The Tampa Bay native faced Seattle on July 4 and yielded one run while striking out 10 over seven frames in the 2-1 victory.

Iwakuma won his third straight start on July 8, holding Kansas City to one run with six strikeouts and three walks over 6 2/3 innings. The 35-year-old is primed for a strong second half after going 8-2 with a 4.15 ERA in his last 10 starts since May 20. Jose Altuve is 14-for-32 with a home run against Iwakuma, who is 4-6 with a 4.26 ERA in 12 career starts against Houston but 0-4 with a 7.50 ERA in his last five outings.

WALK-OFFS

1. Mariners SS Ketel Marte left Friday’s game with a sprained right ankle and is listed as day-to-day.

2. Houston OF Carlos Gomez is batting .214 with six hits in his last 40 at-bats.

3. Seattle manager Scott Servais said LHP Mike Montgomery will start Sunday’s series finale.

GAME: Baltimore Orioles (52-36) at Tampa Bay Rays (34-55)
DATE/TIME: Saturday, July 16 - 6:10 PM EST
WHERE: Tropicana Field, St. Petersburg, Florida
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

Jonathan Schoop has quietly been a major force this season and hopes to continue the trend when his Baltimore Orioles visit the struggling Tampa Bay Rays on Saturday. Schoop has hit safely in 10 consecutive games to raise his average to .303 and belted the go-ahead homer in Friday’s 4-3 victory in the series opener against the Rays.

Baltimore owns a two-game lead in the American League East after winning for the fifth time in six games and will send ace Chris Tillman to the mound on Saturday. Tillman will have to be careful with Tampa Bay’s Evan Longoria, who is 17-for-47 with seven homers and 10 RBIs in his career against him. Left-hander Matt Moore goes for Tampa Bay, which has dropped 23 of its last 26 games and seven straight overall while going 2-8 against the Orioles in 2016. Corey Dickerson is warming up, going 9-for-21 with three doubles during a six-game hitting streak for the Rays.

TV: 6:10 p.m. ET, MASN2 (Baltimore), FSN Sun (Tampa Bay)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Orioles RH Chris Tillman (12-2, 3.41 ERA) vs. Rays LH Matt Moore (5-6, 4.46)

Tillman rebounded from his second loss with two more outstanding outings in July, allowing two runs over 14 innings combined in a pair of victories. The 28-year-old suffered through two rough starts to end June, including a no-decision against Tampa Bay when he permitted six runs on 10 hits in five frames. Tillman is 7-9 with a 4.23 ERA in 23 career outings against the Rays.

Moore has given up two earned runs or fewer in five of his last six starts, going 3-2 during that stretch, but one of the losses was against the Orioles. The 27-year-old yielded five runs and seven hits over 6 2/3 innings in that outing and is 4-6 with a 4.13 ERA lifetime against the Orioles. Adam Jones is 12-for-31 with three homers and Matt Wieters 8-for-23 with two blasts versus Moore.

WALK-OFFS

1. Tampa Bay CF Kevin Kiermaier (broken hand) went 0-for-3 with a walk and a run scored Friday in his first major league game in almost two months.

2. Baltimore 3B Manny Machado is 14-for-42 with three homers against the Rays this season.

3. Tampa Bay C Luke Maile went 2-for-3 with an RBI on Friday after being called up to replace C Hank Conger.

GAME: New York Mets (48-41) at Philadelphia Phillies (42-49)
DATE/TIME: Saturday, July 16 - 7:05 PM EST
WHERE: Citizens Bank Park, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

Neil Walker and the New York Mets have made themselves at home at Citizens Bank Park this season, with the veteran belting four homers in four games to add to his team's total of 14. Walker and the homer-happy Mets look to slug their way to a series victory on Saturday when they play the second contest of the three-game set versus the host Philadelphia Phillies.

Walker launched a three-run shot in Friday's 5-3 victory to improve to 8-for-18 with six RBIs and five runs scored in the City of Brotherly Love this season. Juan Lagares also went deep for the Mets, who have 31 homers in their last 11 contests at Citizens Bank Park. While New York opened its nine-game road trip by improving to 4-3 versus its National League East rival, Philadelphia suffered just its fourth loss in 14 contests on the heels of a woeful stretch in June. Peter Bourjos continued his torrid stretch at the plate with an RBI triple on Friday to improve to 30-for-75 in his last 19 games.

TV: 7:05 p.m. ET, WPIX (New York), NBC-10 (Philadelphia)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Mets RH Logan Verrett (3-6, 4.34 ERA) vs. Phillies RH Jerad Eickhoff (6-10, 3.80)

With injuries ripping gaping holes in the rotation, Verrett is in line to make consecutive starts for the first time since April. The 26-year-old recorded back-to-back scoreless outings at that time, scattering three hits versus Miami on April 13 before allowing six hits and striking out four in an 11-1 rout of Philadelphia six nights later. Verrett jumped out to a 3-0 mark before losing six decisions in his last 18 appearances.

Eickhoff was on the business end of a mile-high beatdown as he was blitzed for a season-high eight runs on as many hits in 5 1/3 innings of an 8-3 loss at Colorado. The 26-year-old has pitched well with unfavorable results versus New York, falling to 1-4 in his career despite limiting the club to just a .198 batting average. Eickhoff yielded three runs in five innings of a 7-2 setback to the Mets on April 8 before working seven strong frames against them in a 5-2 loss 10 nights later.

WALK-OFFS

1. Philadelphia All-Star CF Odubel Herrera is mired in a 1-for-19 slump.

2. New York SS Asdrubal Cabrera has 12 hits in nine games this month.

3. Phillies rookie 1B Tommy Joseph is 11-for-22 with three homers, six RBIs and eight runs scored in his last seven contests.

DATE/TIME: Saturday, July 16 - 7:05 PM EST
WHERE: Nationals Park, Washington, District of Columbia
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The National League East-leading Washington Nationals are infusing some youth into the lineup to begin the second half and are already getting strong returns. The Nationals will try to clinch a series win behind youngsters Michael Taylor and Trea Turner when they host the Pittsburgh Pirates in the second of a three-game set on Saturday.

Turner and Taylor each spent the first half bouncing in and out of the everyday lineup and going back and forth to Triple-A, but the two were occupying the top two spots in the Washington batting order when the second half began on Friday. Turner singled in four at-bats and Taylor blasted a two-run homer as the Nationals took the opener 5-1. The Pirates surged through the end of the first half to give themselves some hope of catching the Chicago Cubs in the NL Central and are trying to infuse some youth into their lineup as well but can’t seem to sneak rookie first baseman Josh Bell into a starting spot. The slugging top prospect served as a pinch hitter on Friday and walked in his lone at-bat.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Pirates RH Gerrit Cole (5-4, 2.77 ERA) vs. Nationals RH Tanner Roark (8-5, 3.01)

Cole spent the last month on the disabled list with a strained right triceps but came through a rehab stint at Triple-A with no issues and is ready to plug back into the top of the Pittsburgh rotation. The former No. 1 overall pick did not allow more than three earned runs in any of his final seven major league appearances before hitting the DL and has surrendered just three home runs in 68 1/3 total innings. Cole is seeing Washington for the first time in 2016 and held the Nationals to one run over 7 2/3 innings in his lone start against them last season.

Roark has gone at least seven innings in each of his last four starts and got a little extra work in before the All-Star break by tossing 2 1/3 hitless frames of relief against the New York Mets on Sunday. The 29-year-old is nearly as sharp as Cole when it comes to keeping the ball in the park with seven home runs allowed in 116 2/3 innings. Roark has yet to face the Pirates this season and is 1-0 with a 4.66 ERA in three career games – one start – against them.

WALK-OFFS

1. Pirates 2B Josh Harrison is 0-for-12 in his last five games.

2. Nationals All-Star 2B Daniel Murphy sat out on Friday with leg soreness and is day-to-day.

3. Pittsburgh will send LH Jon Niese to the bullpen to make room for Cole in the rotation.

GAME: Colorado Rockies (41-48) at Atlanta Braves (31-59)
DATE/TIME: Saturday, July 16 - 7:10 PM EST
WHERE: Turner Field, Atlanta, Georgia
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The post All-Star break represents an opportunity for the Atlanta Braves to solidify the key components of their 2017 roster, and Mike Foltynewicz is one of the young talents squarely in focus. Foltynewicz takes the mound Saturday as the Braves host the Colorado Rockies in the middle contest of a three-game weekend series, coming off a career-high 10-strikeout performance Sunday against the Chicago White Sox.

Atlanta fell 11-2 in Friday’s series opener, but second baseman Jace Peterson continues to produce, improving to .324 in 29 games since being promoted from Triple-A Gwinnett in early June. Colorado won Friday for just the fourth time in 13 games but continues getting strong production from the middle of its batting order. Right fielder Carlos Gonzalez finished 3-for-4 in his 1,000th major-league game and is hitting .376 since May 23 – tops in the majors during that span. Third baseman Nolan Arenado drove in his National League-leading 71st run, and his 201 RBIs since the start of 2015 leads all major-league players.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, ROOT (Colorado), FSN South (Atlanta)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rockies RH Chad Bettis (7-6, 5.65 ERA) vs. Braves RH Mike Foltynewicz (3-3, 3.67)

Bettis got off to a good start in posting a 3.77 ERA through five April starts but has regressed since, allowing 51 earned runs in his past 13 starts (6.46 ERA) while opponents are hitting .336 and slugging .505. The 27-year-old leads the NL in hits allowed (128) and earned runs surrendered (64) entering the weekend, having given up four earned runs or more six times in his past nine outings. Bettis made one of his best starts of the season in his final outing before the All-Star break, beating Philadelphia on July 7 by allowing two runs on seven hits in 6 2/3 innings.

The 24-year-old Foltynewicz dominated Chicago in the final game before the break, allowing five hits in seven shutout innings with no walks. The hard-throwing Foltynewicz has walked only three hitters in 15 2/3 innings since coming off the disabled list in late June, and despite giving up four homers in a 5-1 loss July 5 at Philadelphia, he allowed two earned runs or fewer for the sixth time in his past eight starts Sunday. The Illinois native received just 3.07 runs of support in his nine starts.

WALK-OFFS

1. The Rockies are 9-1 against the Braves since June 11, 2014.

2. Atlanta closer and RHP Arodys Vizcaino left after throwing three pitches in the ninth Friday, grabbing his right side.

3. Braves pitchers uncorked five wild pitches Friday, one shy of the franchise record set in 1979.

Preview: Brewers at Reds

GAME: Milwaukee Brewers (38-50) at Cincinnati Reds (33-57)
DATE/TIME: Saturday, July 16 - 7:10 PM EST
WHERE: Great American Ball Park, Cincinnati, Ohio
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Milwaukee Brewers and the Cincinnati Reds are each spending the second half looking for signs that the future could turn out to be better than the present. Both teams will showcase the veterans for possible trades and give more time to the youngsters when the Reds host the Brewers in the second of a three-game series on Saturday.

Cincinnati has veterans Jay Bruce, Joey Votto and Brandon Phillips sitting in the middle of the lineup and clogging up the payroll, but only Bruce seems like a realistic option for a trade. Phillips has expressed his desire to stay in Cincinnati while Votto struggles through one of his worst seasons and has seven years left on a $225 million contract. The Brewers don’t have large veteran contracts on the books aside from left fielder Ryan Braun, who is still productive and could find his way out of town along with All-Star catcher Jonathan Lucroy. Lucroy drove in a run on Friday to support fellow trade candidate Matt Garza, but the Reds scored three runs in the sixth inning to take the lead and went on to grab a 5-4 victory.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, FSN Wisconsin (Milwaukee), FSN Ohio (Cincinnati)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Brewers RH Jimmy Nelson (5-7, 3.62 ERA) vs. Reds LH John Lamb (1-6, 5.43)

Nelson is not among the players rumored to be available from Milwaukee at the deadline and is fast becoming one of the pieces around which the team will build. The 27-year-old allowed a total of six runs in his final four starts before the All-Star break but could not come out with a win due to a lack of support. Nelson’s last win came on May 29 against Cincinnati, when he yielded two runs and six hits in 7 1/3 innings.

Lamb was ripped for eight runs on eight hits – three home runs – and four walks at Washington on July 3 but went into the break with a better feeling after putting up a solid effort in a no decision at Miami on July 9. The 26-year-old struck out a career-high nine and did not walk a batter but still suffered the loss while surrendering three runs in five innings. Lamb endured his shortest outing of the season at Milwaukee on May 27 when he was rocked for six runs in 3 2/3 frames.

WALK-OFFS

1. Reds RHP Homer Bailey (elbow) is expected to come off the disabled list after two more rehab starts.

2. The Brewers recalled RHP Corey Knebel from Triple-A Colorado Springs.

3. Milwaukee SS Jonathan Villar recorded multiple hits in four of his last five games.

GAME: Cleveland Indians (53-36) at Minnesota Twins (32-57)
DATE/TIME: Saturday, July 16 - 7:10 PM EST
WHERE: Target Field, Minneapolis, Minnesota
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Cleveland Indians stumbled into the All-Star break with losses in four of their last five contests, but they quickly found their step against the cellar-dwelling Minnesota Twins. After beginning their nine-game road trip with a convincing win in the opener, the American League Central-leading Indians vie for a series victory when the three-game set continues at Target Field on Saturday.

Mike Napoli collected three hits and crossed the plate as many times in Friday's 5-2 win to improve to 7-for-13 with two homers, five RBIs and seven runs scored in his last four games. Jose Ramirez added a pair of run-scoring singles to bolster his three-game stretch to 6-for-14 with six RBIs. While Cleveland improved to 27-11 versus its division foes, Minnesota is singing a vastly different tune with a sour 6-22 mark against the rest of the AL Central. Brian Dozier homered for the second straight game but is just 2-for-20 in his career versus Saturday starter Trevor Bauer.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, SportsTime Ohio (Cleveland), FSN North (Minnesota)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Indians RH Trevor Bauer (7-3, 3.30 ERA) vs. Twins RH Tyler Duffey (5-6, 5.20)

Bauer permitted two earned runs or fewer in six straight starts before being battered for five and eight hits over 5 2/3 innings in a 5-4 setback against the New York Yankees on July 7. The 25-year-old fell to 1-4 lifetime versus Minnesota after allowing three runs in 6 2/3 frames of a 5-1 loss on May 15. The road could provide some solace for Bauer, who is 5-1 with a 2.57 ERA away from Progressive Field.

Duffey improved to 3-0 with a 2.25 ERA in his last three starts after scattering two hits over six scoreless innings in a 10-1 rout of Texas on July 7. The 25-year-old struck out nine in that contest and 19 over his last three outings (20 innings) after fanning just five in his previous three trips to the mound. Duffey yielded just six hits in seven scoreless innings on May 15 versus Cleveland, improving to 2-0 with a 0.93 ERA and 1.03 WHIP while limiting the club to a .191 batting average in three career encounters.

WALK-OFFS

1. Minnesota veteran 1B Joe Mauer is 11-for-27 with six runs scored in his last seven contests.

2. Cleveland All-Star SS Francisco Lindor crossed the plate twice in the opener and has scored nine runs during his seven-game hitting streak.

3. Twins RF Miguel Sano has recorded three homers, nine RBIs and as many runs scored in his last 10 contests.

GAME: Kansas City Royals (45-44) at Detroit Tigers (47-43)
DATE/TIME: Saturday, July 16 - 7:10 PM EST
WHERE: Comerica Park, Detroit, Michigan
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Kansas City Royals have looked every bit like the defending World Series champions when they play at home, but it has been a different story on the road. The Royals look to avoid a fifth consecutive road defeat Saturday when they play the second of a three-game series with the host Detroit Tigers.

Kansas City’s title defense is on tenuous ground, as the Royals sit fourth in the American League Central largely because of a 16-31 road mark. The road woes continued with a 4-2 loss Friday, as Detroit rallied against the Royals’ vaunted bullpen and took the lead on Victor Martinez’s two-run infield single. The second-place Tigers need all the wins they can get to keep pace with red-hot Cleveland, especially against AL Central rivals – they’re 14-18 against division foes. Detroit needs to continue to take advantage of its current six-game homestand, which concludes with three contests against last-place Minnesota, and improve upon its 24-16 home mark.
TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, Fox Sports 1

PITCHING MATCHUP: Royals LH Danny Duffy (4-1, 3.09 ERA) vs. Tigers RH Mike Pelfrey (2-8, 4.58)
After beginning the season in the bullpen, Duffy has made a strong transition to the rotation, going 4-1 with a 3.11 ERA over 11 starts. The 27-year-old has posted three straight strong outings, allowing six runs over 23 innings with 23 strikeouts and one walk over that span. Duffy is 3-6 with a 3.24 ERA in 15 games (12 starts) against the Tigers.
Pelfrey has pitched better of late, compiling a 2.45 ERA over his last four outings including back-to-back quality starts in his last two. The 32-year-old was on the wrong end of a shutout last time out at Toronto – the fourth time the Tigers have been blanked with him on the mound. Pelfrey is 1-3 with a 5.35 ERA in seven starts against the Royals, including a loss earlier this season.

WALK-OFFS
1. Royals closer Wade Davis (forearm strain) could be activated from the disabled list as soon as Saturday
2. Tigers 2B Ian Kinsler hit his 35th career leadoff home run Friday, tying him with Bobby Bonds for the eighth-most in major-league history.
3. Detroit OF Justin Upton was placed on the bereavement list and is not eligible to return until Sunday.

GAME: Miami Marlins (48-41) at St. Louis Cardinals (46-43)
DATE/TIME: Saturday, July 16 - 7:15 PM EST
WHERE: Busch Stadium, St. Louis, Missouri
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The St. Louis Cardinals began the second half of the season in much the same manner as they finished the first - with yet another defeat at home. Losers of 11 of their last 15 at Busch Stadium, the Cardinals look to get it together on Saturday as they host the second contest of their three-game series versus the Miami Marlins.

Tommy Pham belted two of St. Louis' four homers in Friday's 7-6 setback, but the power display wasn't enough to prevent the club from eclipsing last season's total with its 27th home loss. Aledmys Diaz has done his part with two homers, six RBIs and five runs scored during his seven-game hitting streak. While the Cardinals need to turn it around as they continue their 10-game homestand, Miami has won four in a row and seven of 10 in July. Giancarlo Stanton has collected 11 RBIs and eight runs scored during his eight-game hitting streak, but the defending Home Run Derby champion is 0-for-4 in a small sample size versus Saturday starter Adam Wainwright.

TV: 7:15 p.m. ET, FSN Florida (Miami), FSN Midwest (St. Louis)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Marlins RH Tom Koehler (6-7, 4.50 ERA) vs. Cardinals RH Adam Wainwright (8-5, 4.49)

Koehler saw his winless stretch extend to four outings on Sunday after allowing three runs and seven hits in four innings of a no-decision versus Cincinnati. The 30-year-old kept the ball in the park in that contest after permitting four homers in his previous three turns. Matt Holliday is batting just .171 at home but has three hits in five career at-bats against Koehler.

Wainwright has recorded back-to-back dominant outings as he followed seven scoreless innings versus Milwaukee on July 2 by striking out a season high-tying nine in seven frames of a 5-1 victory over Pittsburgh five nights later. The 34-year-old has kept the ball in the park in each of his last seven trips to the mound. Wainwright owns a 4-2 career record versus Miami, although he suffered the loss in his last encounter despite yielding three runs in seven innings.

WALK-OFFS

1. Miami veteran 3B Martin Prado is 9-for-18 with three RBIs and as many runs scored during his five-game hitting streak.

2. St. Louis OF Stephen Piscotty homered in the series opener to extend his hitting streak to six games, during which he has notched five RBIs and as many runs scored.

3. Marlins C J.T. Realmuto is 5-for-13 with five runs scored in his last three contests.

Preview: Dodgers at Diamondbacks

GAME: Los Angeles Dodgers (52-40) at Arizona Diamondbacks (38-53)
DATE/TIME: Saturday, July 16 - 8:10 PM EST
WHERE: Chase Field, Phoenix, Arizona
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Los Angeles Dodgers own the best post All-Star break record in the majors over the last three-plus years, and their opener to this season's second half proved they are serious about holding on to that distinction. The Dodgers aim for their 20th victory in the last 28 outings Saturday as they continue a three-game set in Arizona versus the Diamondbacks.

Los Angeles pounded out 18 hits en route to a 13-7 win over Arizona on Friday and watched backup utilityman Chris Taylor - a career .237 hitter who had yet to homer in 249 at-bats entering the contest - finish a single shy of the cycle, hit a grand slam and record six RBIs in the rout. The victory moved the Dodgers within 5 1/2 games of National League West-leading San Francisco and also improved their second-half record since the start of the 2013 campaign to 127-79 - maintaining their status as the only club to win at least 60 percent of their post-Midsummer Classic contests over that span. While Los Angeles is surging, Arizona has dropped five straight and 13 of its last 15 to completely fall out of the NL West race. The Diamondbacks own the second-worst home mark in the majors (15-33) and have been unable to find much success against the Dodgers in general, going 12-33 in their 45 meetings - the worst record for any team against a divisional foe since the start of the 2014 season.
TV: 8:10 p.m. ET, SportsNet LA (Los Angeles), FSN Arizona Plus

PITCHING MATCHUP: Dodgers RH Brandon McCarthy (2-0, 2.70 ERA) vs. Diamondbacks RH Archie Bradley (3-5, 4.64)
McCarthy has stepped up with five strong innings and a victory in each of his first two turns since returning from Tommy John surgery on July 3. The 33-year-old, who made 22 starts in his only year with the Diamondbacks in 2013, permitted three runs on three hits and three walks versus San Diego after producing a scoreless performance against Colorado. McCarthy never has faced Arizona but has baffled right-handed hitters so far this season, giving up only two hits in 22 at-bats.
Bradley ended up on the wrong end of a one-hitter by Madison Bumgarner in San Francisco on Sunday and took a hard-luck loss as a result, yielding two runs while fanning six in as many frames. The 23-year-old Oklahoman has allowed three runs or fewer in four of his last five outings, but he has only one win to show for it over that span. Bradley surrendered five runs over 5 2/3 innings in a loss to the Dodgers on June 14, falling to 1-1 with a 3.86 ERA in two career starts against them.

WALK-OFFS
1. Los Angeles LHP Adam Liberatore has made a team-record 24 consecutive scoreless appearances spanning 18 2/3 innings. Over that stretch, opponents are 5-for-58 and have struck out 23 times against him.
2. Arizona LHP Patrick Corbin singled in his only at-bat Friday, giving the Diamondbacks' pitching staff their 36th hit of the season - matching its total from all of last season.
3. Dodgers RF Yasiel Puig went 3-for-6 in the opener and is batting .333 in 20 games since returning from the disabled list on June 21.

Preview: Giants at Padres

GAME: San Francisco Giants (57-34) at San Diego Padres (39-51)
DATE/TIME: Saturday, July 16 - 8:40 PM EST
WHERE: Petco Park, San Diego, California
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The San Diego Padres are clearly playing for the future following Thursday’s trade of All-Star pitcher Drew Pomeranz to Boston, but they still could play a key role in the National League West race. The Padres have won 12 of their last 21 games heading into Saturday’s contest against the visiting San Francisco Giants, who lead the division by 5 1/2 games over the second-place Dodgers.

San Diego snapped a nine-game losing streak against the Giants with a 4-1 victory Friday as All-Star first baseman Wil Myers belted his 20th home run among two hits and scored twice. The Padres still have several players on the trade block, including catcher Derek Norris and outfielder Melvin Upton Jr., but the 25-year-old Myers could be a major part of the team’s rebuilding efforts. The Padres have plenty of work ahead of them to catch up to the Giants, who have gone 26-7 against NL West foes since April 25 and boast the majors’ best record at 57-34. San Francisco shortstop Brandon Crawford is 9-for-20 during his six-game hitting streak while right fielder Hunter Pence (hamstring) is set to begin a minor-league rehab assignment Saturday and could return in about a week.

TV: 8:40 p.m. ET, CSN Bay Area (San Francisco), FSN San Diego

PITCHING MATCHUP: Giants RH Jeff Samardzija (9-5, 3.91 ERA) vs. Padres RH Luis Perdomo (3-4, 7.48)

Samardzija allowed two runs and struck out six in 6 1/3 innings against Arizona on July 8 to win for the first time in his last four starts. The strong outing came at a good time for the 31-year-old, who had yielded a total of 16 runs over his previous three starts covering 16 1/3 innings. Samardzija owns a 6-1 record with a 2.90 ERA in nine career games (seven starts) against San Diego, including 2-1 with a 1.57 ERA in three starts at Petco Park.

Perdomo turned in an another encouraging effort last Saturday while holding the Dodgers to four runs (two earned) in a career-high tying six innings. “Ever since he’s become a starter, he’s been great,” Myers told reporters. “He's becoming more confident. He can pitch, and we know he can compete at this level.” The 23-year-old is set to make his eighth career start and first against the Giants after facing them twice in relief earlier this season.

WALK-OFFS

1. The Padres placed Upton Jr. on the bereavement list and recalled INF/OF Alexi Amarista and LHP Buddy Baumann from Triple-A El Paso.

2. Giants RHP Matt Cain (hamstring) allowed nine runs and 10 hits over four innings in a minor-league rehab start for Class A Lancaster on Friday. Cain is expected to start for the Giants on Wednesday against Boston.

3. San Diego 2B Cory Spangenberg (quad) suffered a setback in his rehab and may not return this season.

Preview: White Sox at Angels

GAME: Chicago White Sox (45-44) at Los Angeles Angels (38-52)
DATE/TIME: Saturday, July 16 - 9:05 PM EST
WHERE: Angel Stadium of Anaheim, Anaheim, California
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Chicago White Sox look to avoid a third straight shutout loss when they visit the Los Angeles Angels on Saturday for the middle contest of their three-game set. Chicago ended the first half of the season with a 2-0 setback against Atlanta and returned from the All-Star break with very little punch, recording only five hits in a 7-0 defeat to Los Angeles in Friday's series opener.

Adam Eaton registered a single and a double for his fourth two-hit performance in seven games while Justin Morneau made his debut with the White Sox following offseason elbow surgery and grounded out as a pinch-hitter. The Angels regrouped after dropping their last two games before the break, using a five-run rally in the seventh inning to help improve to 5-2 in their last seven. Albert Pujols went 0-for-4 on Friday after collecting 19 RBIs over his previous 23 contests. Yunel Escobar has hit safely in 14 of his last 16 games following a 2-for-4 effort in the series opener.

TV: 9:05 p.m. ET, CSN Chicago, FSN West (Los Angeles)

PITCHING MATCHUP: White Sox RH James Shields (4-10, 5.42 ERA) vs. Angels RH Matt Shoemaker (4-9, 4.45)

Shields has performed much better of late, going 2-1 over his last four starts while allowing fewer than three runs in three of the outings. It has been a big turnaround for the 34-year-old Californian, who was tagged for 22 runs and 24 hits in 8 2/3 innings over his first three turns after being acquired from San Diego. Shields, who has reached double digits in losses for the fifth time in his 11-year career, is 6-3 with two complete games, one shutout and a 3.31 ERA in 13 career starts against the Angels.

Shoemaker halted a string of four straight losses July 8 when he notched the win at Baltimore despite giving up three runs in five innings. The 29-year-old native of Michigan is just 1-4 at home this season but has been superb over his last five outings, allowing a total of four runs in 35 1/3 frames while producing three scoreless performances. Shoemaker pitched well in Chicago on April 19, yielding two runs and six hits in 6 1/3 innings, but fell to 0-2 in three career starts against the White Sox.

WALK-OFFS

1. White Sox OF Avisail Garcia is 2-for 6 lifetime against Shields, with both hits being home runs.

2. Chicago purchased the contract of RHP Carson Fulmer from Double-A Birmingham, activated Morneau (elbow) from the disabled list and optioned OF Jason Coats to Triple-A Charlotte.

3. Los Angeles LHP Tyler Skaggs (Tommy John surgery) is on track to return to action by August after allowing one hit and registering 14 strikeouts over seven innings of a rehab start for Triple-A Salt Lake on Thursday.
