MLB betting cheat sheet: Over cashing in National League West
By DOC'S SPORTS

Here's a comprehensive look at betting notes for this weekend’s major-league schedule:

Wild West

The Over was the way to go in the National League West throughout the first three days of the season. As of Thursday afternoon, the five representatives were 12-3 O/U. None had scored fewer than 13 total runs and the Colorado Rockies had crossed the plate 20 times.

Braves’ New World

After cleaning house in the offseason, all the depleted Atlanta Braves did was go out and sweep the Miami Marlins in their opening series. Atlanta has given up only three runs (1-2 O/U) heading into a weekend series with the Mets. The two NL East rivals are 1-6-1 O/U in their last eight head-to-head meetings.

Something’s Gotta Give

In his first Opening Day start with the Boston Red Sox, Clay Buchholz pitched seven scoreless innings at the expense of the Philadelphia Phillies while surrendering just three hits and striking out nine. But his next start is coming on Sunday night against the New York Yankees, against whom he went 0-2 with a 6.88 ERA in three starts last season (2-1 O/U).

Pitching Notes

* Look for David Price of the Detroit Tigers to go Under the total again when he takes the mound on Saturday against the Cleveland Indians. The Tigers won each of their first two games this season with shutouts—including one started by Price. The southpaw, who went 8.2 innings and allowed five hits on Monday against the Minnesota Twins, also ended 2014 with three consecutive Unders. Detroit scored 15 runs in its first two games, but the team is facing Cleveland’s Corey Kluber (7.1 innings, two runs at the Houston Astros in his first start) on Saturday.

* Seattle Mariners’ ace Felix Hernandez appears to have picked up where he left off in 2014. King Felix gave up only two hits and one run while striking out 10 batters in seven innings during a 4-1 win over the Los Angeles Angels on Opening Day. He wrapped up last season with three scoreless outings in his last five. Hernandez is 1-6 O/U in his last seven starts heading into Sunday at the Oakland Athletics.

Hitting Notes

* Los Angeles Dodgers’ first baseman Adrian Gonzalez went a ridiculous 10-for-13 with five home runs (three on Wednesday) and seven RBIs in his first three games of the season (all Overs for the Dodgers). This weekend he is going up against the Arizona Diamondbacks (2-1 O/U), who allowed a total of 16 runs in their first three contests.

* Adrian Beltre of the Texas Rangers went 0-for-11 in his first three games of 2015. He is not alone, either. The Rangers scored a grand total of three runs in their first three games versus Oakland. This weekend’s opponent, Houston, allowed only two runs in its first two games (0-2 O/U).

Totals Streak

San Diego Padres (3-0 O/U): San Diego outdid all of its competition in terms of an offseason spending spree and the offense acted accordingly with 14 runs in its first three games against the Dodgers. Of course, the Padres also gave up 16 total runs. Next up for SD are the San Francisco Giants (2-1 O/U).

Injury Notes

* Detroit traded Max Scherzer to the Washington Nationals this offseason and now the pitching staff is not getting any help. Both starter Justin Verlander (triceps) and closer Joe Nathan (flexor strain) were placed on the disabled list earlier this week.

* Jayson Werth (shoulder) and Denard Span (core surgery) of the Washington Nationals will be on rehab assignments this weekend. Washington (0-2 O/U) scored a total of three runs in its first two games.

Weather Watch

* There are a handful of games that could be affected by thundershowers Thursday. Below are a list of games and percent chance of thundershowers.
Blue Jays at Orioles - 60 percent
Red Sox at Yankees - 75 percent
Nationals at Phillies - 71 percent
Mets at Braves - 70 percent

Orioles' Showalter plans short leave of absence
The Sports Xchange

Baltimore Orioles manager Buck Showalter will leave the team briefly later this month to attend a memorial service for his father-in-law, who died Thursday.

Showalter is expected to travel to Nashville for the service around April 25. The Orioles host a series against the Boston Red Sox from April 24 to April 26.

The Orioles are 2-2 after a 12-5 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays on Friday.

'On the Diamond'

The meeting in Turner Field Saturday night between Atlanta and New York has the markings of a pitcher's duel with the run total deserving a close look. The pitching duel in question will be between the Braves' Julio Teheran and Mets' Dillon Gee. When it comes to low-scoring baseball games, Teheran has shown he can keep the score low. In the right-hander's season opener vs Miami he allowed 1 run over 6 innings of work with the game playing 'Under' moving his record to a sparkling 21-7 'Under' facing a division opponent. Gee making his first start of the season had a 2.49 ERA over 21 2/3 innings of work in Grapefruit League play and looks prime to continue his smart 15-7-2 'Under' stretch vs. a team with a winning record. These two hurler's have penchant in this series for making 'Under' bettors happy as Teheran has posted a 6-1 'Under' facing Mets with Gee has notched 12 'Under', 2 'Over' in his career starts vs Atlanta. Evidence is the key in making any case, and the numbers above clearly illustrate 'Under' is a good choice. BetOnline Sportsbook has noted the possibility of a low-scoring affair setting the total at 6.5.

UFC Fight Night 64 Preview: Cro Cop seeks redemption versus Gonzaga
By MMAODDSBREAKER

The main event of UFC Fight Night 64 is a five-round heavyweight bout between Gabriel Gonzaga and Mirko Cro Cop.

Gonzaga (16-9) is one of the longest-tenured heavyweight fighters on the UFC roster. The 35-year-old Brazilian is 11-8 in the UFC with wins over the likes of Cro Cop, Shawn Jordan, and Ben Rothwell, with his losses all coming against top-15 talent like Stipe Miocic, Travis Browne, and Matt Mitrione. Gonzaga is a BJJ black belt and he has some of the best submissions in the UFC and has eight tapout wins overall. He is also incredibly powerful on the feet and has eight knockout wins to his credit.

His problems are his speed, as he’s quite slow for a heavyweight, and also his chin, as he’s been knocked out seven times in his career. He is a finisher, though, and not an easy guy to beat.

He is coming into this fight against Cro Cop on a two-fight losing streak, and he desperately needs a win here, but it’s a winnable fight against a guy with a suspect chin who he has been before and that’s why he is the favorite.

Cro Cop (30-11-2, 1 NC) is making his return to the UFC for a third stint in the promotion overall. The 40-year-old Croatian is 4-6 in the UFC overall with wins over the likes of Pat Barry and Anthony Perosh. He also has wins over the likes of Josh Barnett (x3), Wanderlei Silva, Mark Coleman and Kazushi Sakuraba during his illustrious career in MMA.

A kickboxer by trade, Cro Cop is known for his dangerous high kicks and has won 22 fights via T/KO during his career. He is incredibly dangerous on the feet and has won his last two fights by knockout. He is not known for his grappling, but later in his career he started to improve his submissions and overall has five victories by tapout.

Like Gonzaga, though, Cro Cop’s problem is his chin. He has been knocked out five times in his career, including three-straight KO losses that ended his last run in the UFC. He has also been submitted three times. No doubt Cro Cop is an offensive talent, but defensively he is very flawed and while he always has that kicker’s chance, there are too many things going against him to be confident in him against a top-15 heavyweight like Gonzaga, and that’s why he’s the underdog in this fight despite coming into this bout riding a two-fight winning streak.

There is no way this fight is going five rounds. No way. Both men possess finishing ability on the feet and on the mat and with boys guys having suspect chins, I’d be shocked if this went 25 minutes. That being said, I favor Gonzaga to win this fight in devastating fashion. First off, he won the pair’s initial encounter back at UFC 70, and if anything, he’s the fighter who has improved more in the eight years since. Cro Cop was cut from the UFC the last time because he simply can’t hang with top-15 heavyweights anymore. And while Gonzaga isn’t great, he is a top-15 fighter as far as I’m concerned. He has a ton of power and if this fight hits the mat he will have a huge advantage.

Cro Cop’s only chance to win is to catch Gonzaga on the feet, and while I can’t completely rule that out because this is a heavyweight bout and anything can happen, I think more times than not Gonzaga catches Cro Cop and finishes him. I’m leaning towards a knockout, but a submission is possible.

I don’t typically bet on heavyweight fights because the “puncher’s chance” factor is higher, but in this case I have to lean heavyweight towards Gonzaga. I just feel like he has more ways to win this fight and at -170, I think there is value on him for a bet. I feel like Gonzaga should be around -250 in this spot, and believe the line is lower because there is always hype behind Cro Cop, and I have to take advantage of it.

Game of the Day: Grizzlies at Clippers

Memphis Grizzlies at Los Angeles Clippers (-8, 196.5)

The Clippers have won four straight games and hold the No. 5 position in the West but are just one game behind the Grizzlies. Los Angeles is itching for the playoffs to arrive as it has won 11 of its past 12 games. “We’ve been about business,” power forward Blake Griffin told reporters. “I like our attitude and resolve going into games.” The Grizzlies have won four of their past five games, and a Monday visit to play the Golden State Warriors looms after the contest against the Clippers.

TV: 10 p.m. ET, NBATV, SportSouth (Memphis), Prime Ticket (Los Angeles)

LINE HISTORY: Most shops opened the Clips as a 7-point favorite, but that’s since risen to -8 at the time of writing.

INJURY REPORT: Grizzlies – Conley, questionable (foot), Allen, mid-April (hamstring). Clippers – N/A

POWER RANKINGS: Grizzlies (-8) + Clippers (-11.5) + Homecourt (-3) = Clippers -6.5

WHAT CAPPERS SAY: “The Grizzlies have been outscored over their last 20 games, a span that has seen them go just 11-9 SU and 8-12 ATS, and now in danger of losing home court advantage in the first round of the playoffs. It’s incredible to fathom that the Clippers were an under the radar team this year, but they can take solace in the fact that the numbers indicate they were clearly the second best team in the league. Golden State handed them their only loss in their last 12 games.” – Bryan Power

ABOUT THE GRIZZLIES (54-25): Point guard Mike Conley sat out the Utah contest with a sprained right foot and it is uncertain whether or not he will play against Los Angeles. Beno Udrih stepped into the starting lineup and scored 20 points on 9-of-13 shooting and is averaging 17 points on 14-of-21 shooting over the past two games. Center Marc Gasol had a solid all-around game against Jazz with 22 points, seven rebounds and six assists.

ABOUT THE CLIPPERS (53-26): A priority over the final three games is getting sharpshooter Jamal Crawford back on track. The backup guard missed 17 games due to a calf injury and was rusty in his return against the Los Angeles Lakers on Tuesday when he scored four points in 19 minutes, and he said his return was timed with the playoffs in mind. “Do I feel like I’m in rhythm and my timing is there and I’m in tip-top shape? No, not at all,” Crawford told reporters. “But I don’t have that luxury right now. I have to try to get it back as best as I can in games.”

TRENDS:

*Clippers are 1-5 ATS in their last 6 home games.
*Over is 5-1 in Grizzlies last 6 road games.
*Under is 4-1 in Clippers last 5 overall.
*Grizzlies are 9-2 ATS in the last 11 meetings.

CONSENSUS: 58 percent of the public is backing the underdog Grizzlies.

NBA Odds and Predictions: Saturday, April 11 Opening Line Report and Handicapping
by Alan Matthews

The Hawks aren’t on Saturday’s schedule, but I want to address some bad news that could affect them in the playoffs. Swingman Thabo Sefolosha isn’t a starter and only plays about 19 minutes per night, but he’s a hustle guy and a terrific defender. Sefolosha has the best defensive rating on the team by a wide margin and ranks sixth out of 86 qualified small forwards in defensive real plus-minus. However, he will now miss the rest of the season, playoffs included, with a fractured fibula and ligament damage suffered in that weird incident at a New York City nightclub early Wednesday morning. He and teammate Pero Antic (not hurt) were arrested for interfering with the arrest of Pacers forward Chris Copeland, who was stabbed. Sefolosha was hurt while allegedly resisting arrest. The players were there separately at 4 a.m. Sefolosha would usually be on the court at crunch time guarding an opponent’s best perimeter player, so this could be a major factor.

Knicks at Magic (-9.5, 193)

Orlando hosted Toronto on Friday, and the Knicks hosted Milwaukee. So advantage Magic in that they didn’t have to travel — not that much of an advantage is needed against New York. This is Orlando’s home finale, so I’m sure it will want to win it. I really think this team could take a big step forward next season because the backcourt of rookie Elfrid Payton and second-year Victor Oladipo has played so well of late. Payton has become a mini-Russell Westbrook in that he’s a triple-double waiting to happen almost every night. I have nothing positive to say about the Knicks, who could clinch the NBA’s worst record in this game and depending what Minnesota does Friday and Saturday. The Knicks have won nine of the past 12 vs. the Magic, but Orlando leads 2-1 this season.

Key trends: The Knicks are 5-1-1 against the spread in their past seven trips to Orlando. The “over/under” has gone over in 10 of Orlando’s past 11 vs. teams with a losing record.

Early lean: Magic and under.

Raptors at Heat (TBA)

Toronto was in Orlando on Friday with a “possibility” that All-Star guard Kyle Lowry could return from his back problems. Miami lost a crusher on Thursday, 89-78 at home to Chicago in a weird game and one that could end up costing the Heat a playoff spot. Miami led by 19 at halftime and then the Bulls scored 39 of the first 47 points in the second half. The Heat missed their first 12 shots of the third quarter. Dwyane Wade was just 4-for-20 for nine points. Miami pretty much has to win out now and get a bit of help. The Raptors and Heat have split two meetings, each winning at home. Miami is 28-8 all-time at home against Toronto.

Key trends: Toronto is 1-5 ATS in its past six in the second of a back-to-back. The Heat have failed to cover six straight. The under is 4-1 in the past five meetings.

Early lean: Heat will win because they have to.

76ers at Bulls (TBA)

Philadelphia lost its seventh straight Wednesday, 119-90 against Washington. The Sixers never led and shot 34.8 percent from the field, while Washington shot a franchise-record 65.3 percent. Robert Covington scored a career-high 27 points for Philly. However, promising rookie big man Nerlens Noel left in the fourth quarter with a right ankle sprain, and he’s not going to play in this game — or perhaps the rest of the season. Also out is guard Isaiah Canaan, who has missed three straight with a right foot sprain and is done for the year. Chicago rallied from a 19-point halftime deficit in Miami on Thursday and won 89-78 to temporarily take back sole possession of the third seed in the East. In a surprise, Derrick Rose did play the second of a back-to-back and had 12 points in 20 minutes. His shot has been way off in the two games of his return. Rose will be limited to around 20 again in this one. go to askthebookie) Chicago played without All-Star Jimmy Butler due to a calf injury. I could see him or someone like Joakim Noah sitting here because the Bulls can win this game without them — especially with Noel out. The Bulls are 2-0 this season against the Sixers, although neither was a blowout. Chicago has won 10 of the past 11 meetings overall and five straight at home.

Key trends: The home team is 5-2 ATS in the past seven meetings. The under is 5-0 in the past five meetings in Chicago.

Early lean: If this opens in double digits, take Philly. Bulls will win but won’t crush the Sixers.

Grizzlies at Clippers (-6.5, 195.5)

Memphis was in Utah on Friday. The Clippers are peaking at the right time, having won four straight and 11 of 12. They have scored in triple digits in all but one of those games. L.A. comes off a 105-100 win over the Lakers on Tuesday to complete the season sweep. Blake Griffin and J.J. Redick scored 27 points apiece. However, the most important thing to take from that game was the return of Clippers guard and sixth man Jamal Crawford. He played 19 minutes in his first game since early March and had four points. He admitted his rhythm was a bit off. Memphis leads the season series 2-1 and won the lone game in L.A. 90-87 on Feb. 23. The Grizzlies have won three straight at the Clippers.

Key trends: Memphis has covered four straight at the Clippers. The over is 4-1 in the past five there.

Early lean: Clippers and over.

Jazz at Trail Blazers (-7, 185.5)

Utah hosted Memphis on Friday. Portland lost 116-105 in Golden State on Thursday, but the Blazers played great until the fourth quarter, where they were outscored 32-21. More bad injury news for Portland as guard Arron Afflalo suffered an injury to his shooting shoulder and was to undergo medical testing Friday. Afflalo couldn’t lift his arm above his shoulder, so it doesn’t sound good. Acquired at the trade deadline, Afflalo moved into the starting lineup when Wesley Matthews was lost for the season. The Blazers lead the season series 2-1. In the most recent matchup March 25 in Salt Lake City, Portland overcame an 11-point fourth quarter deficit to win 92-89. Damian Lillard had 13 of his 23 points in the fourth quarter. Portland has won three straight at home against the Jazz.

Key trends: The road team is 5-1 ATS in the past six meetings. The over is 8-1 in the past nine in Portland.

Early lean: I’ll take the points as the Blazers could be deflated if the Afflalo injury is serious, and he’s pretty clearly at least going to miss this game.

Timberwolves at Warriors (-20, 213.5)

Minnesota was at the L.A. Lakers on Friday, and this is the team’s final road game. Golden State beat Portland 116-105 on Thursday behind 45 points and 10 assists from Steph Curry. He became the first Warriors player with at least 45 points and 10 assists in a game since Latrell Sprewell in 1997. Curry also broke his own NBA single-season record for made 3-pointers and was an amazing 17-for-23 from the field (8-for-13 from long range). This game means less than nothing for the Warriors against a Wolves team that is missing half its roster due to injuries. go to askthebookie)I understand Steve Kerr has said he won’t flat-out sit his guys down the stretch, but I’m willing to bet he does here. At least injury-prone center Andrew Bogut. I’ll also be stunned if any key Warrior who does play gets more than 25 minutes. Let the home fans see the guys for a bit and then get them out of there and empty the bench. The Warriors are 3-0 vs. the Wolves this year, although the most recent was close. Golden State has won 17 of the past 20 meetings overall and is looking for the season sweep for the second time in three years.

Key trends: Minnesota has covered only six of the past 20 meetings. The over is 5-1 in Golden State’s past six at home vs. teams with a losing road record.

Early lean: After being pushed to the limit Thursday and facing an injury-ravaged, terrible Wolves team there’s NO WAY Kerr doesn’t rest some guys. Right? Take the points — I’m shocked it’s this high — because the Warriors will likely go through the motions.

Five To Follow MLB Betting: Saturday, April 11, 2015 Opening Line Report
by Alan Matthews

What’s the record for the fastest in a season a closer was pulled from his role? I’m sure there’s a statistic for that somewhere, but I’m guessing the Toronto Blue Jays just broke the mark. Manager John Gibbons announced the move Thursday, one day after Brett Cecil blew a save by allowing three runs in the bottom of the eighth to the Yankees. Gibbons did say it was only temporary, but I doubt that. Cecil was a terrific set-up man the previous two years but did have some shoulder issues this spring, so maybe that’s why he wasn’t sharp. He will move back into a set-up role. Flame-throwing 20-year-old Miguel Castro takes over the job for now — he nearly won it in spring training. Castro got his first save Thursday night with a scoreless inning vs. the Yankees and Cecil was credited with a hold.

Cardinals at Reds (-137, 6.5)

I will be very interested to see how the Cardinals’ Michael Wacha fares Saturday in his first start of the season. He looked like a rising superstar late in 2013 but suffered a very rare shoulder injury (stress reaction) last year and saw his season end as a reliever when allowing the NLCS-winning home run to the Giants’ Travis Ishikawa. Wacha was 5-6 with a 3.20 ERA in 19 starts before missing a few months. He was 1-1 with a 3.38 ERA in four starts against the Reds. Joey Votto is 4-for-9 with two doubles and two RBIs off him. Maybe Jay Bruce gets the day off (he won’t). He’s 0-for-13 with seven strikeouts. Reds starter Johnny Cueto was brilliant in 2014 but just 1-2 in three starts vs. the Cardinals despite a 2.25 ERA. Cueto started this year about as strong as possible, blanking the Pirates on four hits and striking out 10 but getting a no-decision thanks to his bullpen. The Cards’ Jon Jay isn’t exactly a great hitter but he kills Cueto, going 12-for-25 with three homers and seven RBIs.

Key trends: The Cards are 2-9 in Wacha’s past 11 road starts. Cincinnati is 4-0 in Cueto’s past four on Saturday. The “over/under” has gone over in four of five Wacha’s past five vs. the NL Central. The under is 4-1 in Cueto’s past five vs. St. Louis.

Early lean: Reds and under.

Twins at White Sox (-160, 8.5)

Minnesota looked completely inept in its opening sweep at the hands of the Tigers. The White Sox were supposed to be the AL’s most improved team, but they were dominated in a three-game sweep at Kansas City. If the Twins were to somehow sweep this series, which started Friday, that Pale Hose bandwagon will empty fast. New White Sox Jeff Samardzija bombed in his first start, allowing five runs, six hits, three walks and hitting two Royals in a 10-1 loss. He faced the Twins once last season while with Oakland, allowing two runs over six innings in a win. Trevor Plouffe is 2-for-5 with five RBIs off him. Mike Pelfrey starts for the Twins, and he lost a battle for the No. 5 spot in the rotation but was needed back in the rotation with the suspension to Ervin Santana. Pelfrey missed most of last year with the Twins and also much of 2012 with the Mets due to elbow surgery. Chicago’s Adam LaRoche hits him hard, going 9-for-13 with six RBIs.

Key trends: The Twins are 1-4 in Pelfrey’s past five on the road. The over is 4-1 in his past five overall. The over is 8-1 in the past nine meetings in Chicago (entering Friday).

Early lean: White Sox and over.

Mariners at A’s (-160, 7)

With all due respect to the Reds’ Cueto, the most impressive Opening Day pitching performance likely was from Oakland’s Sonny Gray, and he makes start No. 2 on Saturday. He took a no-hitter vs. Texas into the eighth inning and finished allowing just one hit over eight, walking only one. Gray was 3-1 with a 2.67 ERA in five starts against Seattle in 2014. Robinson Cano has had the most success of the Mariners regulars against him, going 5-for-15 with a homer and three RBIs. Seattle counters with lefty J.A. Happ, who in my opinion is the weak link of the rotation. go to askthebookie) He was acquired this offseason from Toronto in the Michael Saunders deal. Happ was not good this spring with a 6.11 ERA. He made one start last year against Oakland and pitched seven shutout innings. Ben Zobrist is 6-for-13 with three doubles and four RBIs career off him.

Key trends: The A’s are 2-5 in Gray’s past seven at home. The over is 5-1 in his past six there. The A’s are 5-1 in Gray’s past six against Seattle.

Early lean: A’s and under. I might consider the runline at +145.

Blue Jays at Orioles (-118, 8.5)

When Toronto entered camp, a lot of people though young right-hander Aaron Sanchez would win the closer’s job. He was largely fantastic as a rookie last season, allowing just five runs and 14 hits in 33.0 innings over 24 relief appearances, striking out 27. Toronto ideally didn’t want him and fellow top pitching prospect Daniel Norris both in the rotation to start the year, but those plans were scuttled when Marcus Stroman tore his ACL. So Sanchez gets his first big-league start Saturday. He pitched 4.2 innings against the Birds in 2014, allowing two runs and two hits while walking five. Chris Davis homered in his lone at-bat off Sanchez. Ubaldo Jimenez starts for the Orioles, and he was a free-agent disaster last season, going 6-9 with a 4.81 ERA and losing his spot in the rotation. However, Jimenez had a good spring and won the No. 5 job. He was 1-2 with a 4.67 ERA in four appearances (three starts vs. the Jays last year). Jose Bautista can’t hit the guy, going 2-for-26.

Key trends: The Orioles are 6-1 in Jimenez’s past seven starts. The over is 4-1 in his past five overall.

Early lean: Blue Jays and under.

Giants at Padres (+110, 6)

San Francisco starts ace lefty Madison Bumgarner in this one against new Padres right-hander James Shields. Does that matchup sound familiar? It should. On his way to World Series MVP honors last October, Bumgarner beat Shields, then of course with the Royals, in Games 1 and 5. Shields was not good in the opener but pitched well in Game 5 — Bumgarner was simply dominant in both. Shields was solid in his National League debut Monday, allowing two runs and six hits over six innings in a no-decision at the Dodgers. Most Giants haven’t seen Shields in their careers. Buster Posey is 0-for-4, Gregor Blanco is 4-for-7 with a triple and three RBIs. Bumgarner opened the season with a win in Arizona, allowing a run and six hits over seven innings. San Diego’s Justin Upton is 9-for-25 with a homer in his career off Bumgarner. Matt Kemp is hitting .212 off him with a homer and eight strikeouts.

Key trends: The Giants are 5-0 in Bumgarner’s past five after a quality start in his last appearance. San Francisco is 10-3 in his past 13 vs. San Diego. The under is 4-1 in the past five when Bumgarner faces the Padres.

Early lean: Only opening total of 6 on the board. Call it a hunch, but I’m going Padres and over.
