I guess if we didn't have a military, we could be the only nation to lose a war to the French. But I'm thinking our Indians woulda whipped their asses.
actually the indians were on their side many moons ago

Terror, lest we choose to forget 9/11 and the path to 9/11 and all the spoken words and threats since then.

they didn't just choose to leave us alone y'know.

The only way to win this thing long run is to introduce freedom and education to the region, let time do the rest.

And that has what to do with Iraq?

And that has what to do with Iraq?

Saddam, condoned, encouraged, financed and protected terrorists.

Calling Saddam a terrorist is not the same as saying he knew about 9/11.

Bringing a democracy to Arabia could be our first giant step forward.

Iran is doing the same thing. Why don't we invade them? 13 of the hijackers came from Saudi Arabia, a country which also condones, encourages, finances and protects terrorists. Why don't we invade them? Why don't we invade Lebanon? North Korea was on the list of state sponsers of terrorism until Bush removed them. Why don't we invade them?

Hell, let's bring democracy to the whole world by military force! Our amazing successes in Iraq and Afghanistan have shown how easy it is and how we'll be embraced as liberators.

FUCK YOU, WORLD. YOU WILL FOLLOW OUR PREFERRED FORM OF GOVERNMENT EVEN IF WE HAVE TO KILL YOU ALL!!!

You know what would be hilarious?

If we turned into a full-fledged Socialist nation and then started invading all the Democracies so they'll adopt our form of government.

Maybe we should have, but that moment has passed. I think the real reason we didn't, right or wrong was our gov't had two goals, one to flex American power post 9/11 and the other to push democracy on the ME.

The Saddam menace if removed, was seen as more likely to be replaced by a democratic system of gov't than the Saudi menace, which was viewed as being possibly replaced by an Islamic theocracy more aligned with bin Laden's ideology, leaving the population under an even more brutal rule than it currently suffers under the shitbag saudi royal family.

Bringing Democracy to a tribal culture separated by various sects of the same fucked up religion that's 400 years behind the rest of the world is an exercise in futility. Had the Bush administration allowed any contrasting opinions we wouldn't be in this mess and we would have 4300+ soldiers still alive.

Anyone who believes that Iraq will ever, or could ever, be a functioning Democracy is as looney as Loren78.

It's a flea-flicker, yep, but not THAT looney.....

How did this discussion arise in a Paletterman thread anyway? I forget!

your statements about Saudi Arabia are incorrect, their government does not sponsor terrorism. I know at least one member of the Royal Family has, and he was rewarded with Muslim justice.

I also didn't say we would invade every country, did I. What I did say is that we need freedom and education to permeate throughout the region.

Doesn't seem like you were addressing my argument at all.

of course, bringing Democracies to Germany and Japan was also a waste of time, circa 1948.

I know, I know, things are different in Iraq. Especially since their democracy is off to such an awful start.

I believe our government took something like 30 years to establish itself. Of course, they didn't live in the instant gratification 10 second sound bite age.

Japan and Germany were functioning Democracies within a decade. There is very, very little progress of late in Iraq and especially Afghanistan. You should know better than to even mention Iraq (and Afghanistan) in the same breath.

Even if I thought there was a chance, I think I would prefer to have our soldiers back. I'm still trying to figure out what the fuck business it is of ours anyway.
