Hoping to rebound after yesterday's poor performance. I love 2 year-old races and we have plenty today. Happy Gold Cup day!
R1 - #2 Fly Right (12-1) First-timer whose dam won her debut on the grass at Gulfstream. JC has been feeling it lately which adds to my confidence. There are a couple of nice colts entered here, so he'll need some racing luck - but the odds should be high enough to take a shot.
R2 - #3 Fightertown (10-1) In full transparency, I think #7 Powerful will win this race. But, I'll never place a wager on a 2 year-old prohibitive favorite. They're too unpredictable when they are that young. Fightertown is a son of Into Mischief (great debut sire) and the dam was a stakes winner - this is her 3rd offspring to start, one of which is also a stakes winner.
R3 - #5 Strong Quality (6-1) Has been lighting the track on fire in the early mornings since arriving upstate and appears ready to go. I love that he doesn't need the lead to win but should be forwardly placed when the #4 and #6 run out of gas.
R4 - #3 Annapolis (2-5) Move along, nothing to see here.
R5 - #7 Custom Bobby's (6-1) I like Camejo as a trainer. I think he's really underrated and this horse, in particular, has shown marked improvement under his guidance. Today he lures Irad - enough to peak my interest. As a matter of fact, I may single this one. The #11, which looks the best on paper, will be hampered by the post, and the #5, another obvious contender, just doesn't know how to win.
R6 - #5 Kaon (5-1) City of Light a monster sire with first-timers and, even though he's got Franco/Brown connections, the value might be there as I expect the #9 to take plenty of action (maybe too much).
R7 - #4 Cost Basis (10-1) Warning - this guy burns money like he's Charlie Sheen. However, with the claim by Weaver I am willing to lay my money next to the candle and hope it doesn't catch fire. Maybe he needed that last race? Anything back to previous form makes him tough here.
R8 - #4 Dubyahnell (8-1) Hoping he drifts up to double digits. Dam has done nothing but drop winners (including 2 stakes winners) and the sire is 21% with first-timers. Add in the lesser Ortiz and Dubya's certainly playable.
R9 - #5 Graded On A Curve (8-1) His last two efforts at Saratoga have resulted in near misses. Owns a 5 for 11 record (with 3 places) at this surface and distance. Can't ignore.
R10 -#3 Virginia Joy (7-2) How does War Like Goddess lose? Looks like the lock of the century. Well, IF she stumbles, maybe Virginia Joy can hold her off in the stretch. Nobody better than Irad to get "creative" approaching the wire.
R11 - #5 Americanrevolution (3-1) He ran a nice second to Olympiad in the Foster. Can easily turn the tables today - at a better price. A little worried about Dynamic One closing at the wire - will be a nail biter.
R12 - #2 Iron Lion in Zion (20-1) Blinkers off, 2nd time Lasix, down drastically in class, if only someone other than Trevor had the mount I would feel more confident in his chances. But, regardless, the price will be too juicy to resist.
R13 - #9 Eli Dancer (5-1) Going to give Camejo another try. 18 point Beyer lift with addition of Lasix and the move to grass. Now repeats at same level, I expect further improvement.
Best of luck to all those playing Saratoga today - it's almost over.
