"Make no mistake, Mathews is the featured back in this offense," says Acee. "But Tolbert will still get his carries." Acee also predicts Tolbert could reach double-digit touchdowns for a second straight season. Mathews' ADP needed to fall -- and it has of late -- but he now has the look of a value play in Rounds 4-6.

</TD></TR><TR><TD class=vaLink>Turner sees improvement with Mathews' blocking, but not enough to trust him in a preseason game. Mike Tolbert has handled every single passing-down situation through two games and is also the primary red-zone back. "I love what we're doing. I love the combination of [Mathews] and Tolbert," Turner said. There's no reason to expect anything less than a full-blown committee all season barring injury.

</TD></TR><TR><TD class=vaLink>Acee confirms that Mathews and Mike Tolbert will "split time" in the backfield, with Tolbert vulturing the vast majority of red-zone carries and passing-down work. "Consider Mathews as your number two running back and Tolbert a number three/flex option," writes Acee. The sentiment is as expected. Mathews loses a significant amount of his upside to Tolbert.

NFL Network's Jason La Canfora confirms that Tolbert is "fully expected to play" in Week 2 against the Patriots. Tolbert continues to operate as San Diego's primary third-down and red-zone back, killing Ryan Mathews' fantasy value. Tolbert will remain a dicey option on his own. He won't score three times inside the opposing red every week, and only gets 12-15 touches a game. We'd advise against chasing Tolbert's big Week 1 at New England.

</TD></TR><TR><TD class=vaLink>Tolbert's injury initially wasn't expected to hold him out in Week 3, but things will get dicey if he doesn't return to full practice on Friday. Tolbert has been outplayed by Ryan Mathews through San Diego's first two games, so an absence would be ill-timed. For now, still consider him likely to suit up against the Chiefs, but have a contingency ready.
