PASSS on him. Trust me. This man can not carry the load. They will realize that after this year. If you watched the KC/SD MNF game last year, it showed. He balled out then got hurt.

Mathews' impressive skill set combined with a potentially monstrous workload should have fantasy owners salivating.

"I’m in way better shape this time than I was last year and I just feel good about myself. ... I had a great offseason and great OTAs and minicamp, so I'm about to blow it away. It is going to be fun." Mathews' pre-camp ADP is up to No. 5 overall entering an expected breakout year.

He's averaged 5.24 yards-per-touch in his NFL career.

Coach Norv Turner has left open the possibility of Mathews returning for Week 1, but Kharrazi and team sources both tell the Union-Tribune San Diego that he's likely to miss the start of the season. "Frankly, I don't think most people would release him before six weeks," Kharrazi said. "The healing time is 4-6 weeks. So, especially in a professional athlete, I think you're going to take the extra step to make sure it's 100 percent healed because you don't want it to get hit on, and if it's not properly healed, he can reinjure the shoulder." Kharrazi has "never seen someone come back" from Mathews' injury in four weeks. Rotoworld's running back rankings have docked Mathews two games from his 2012 projection.

"Right now, it'd probably be a mix," said Turner, pinpointing Ronnie Brown, Curtis Brinkley, and Le'Ron McClain. He didn't mention Jackie Battle or either of San Diego's rookies. Brown would be the starter, but Brinkley would rotate in and McClain might handle obvious power runs. If you're planning to replace Mathews with one of the above in Weeks 1 and/or 2, you'll be disappointed.

After reading the opinions of multiple medical experts on Mathews' injury, it seems likely that he'll miss Week 1 and be listed as questionable or doubtful for Week 2. Assuming Mathews stays setback-free, he could resume full workloads as soon as Week 3. Notably, Mathews' Average Draft Position at the middle of last week was in the top five. It's since plummeted to the end of the second round.

Note that Acee is merely answering a question on Twitter here, not reporting. Still, no one has a better handle on the pulse of the Chargers. A Week 3 return would give Mathews six full weeks of recovery time. His original timetable was set at roughly 4-6 weeks. The Chargers won't hesitate to use Mathews as a workhorse back once he's healed. We like him as a second-round value pick.

Mathews remains determined to be ready for Week 1. He's 2 1/2 weeks into a 4-6 week timetable and has sustained no setbacks. "I've always been a fast healer, and that's proving true right now," he said. "My range of motion is improving and I'm feeling really good." Mathews did admit that the training staff will have the final say on when he returns. Previous speculation has the Chargers holding their talented workhorse out until Week 3.

Mathews has been extremely optimistic while charging through the rehab process, but that doesn't change the standard timeline for bones to heal. His original timetable was 4-6 weeks from the August 9 fracture and the Chargers have hinted at the back end of that projection. The good news is that once Mathews is unleashed, he will be in shape and have almost no chance of aggravation. The Union-Tribune has previously suggested a Week 3 return.

"I just got to wait," said Mathews. Mathews remains "very hopeful" he'll play in Monday night's opener against the Raiders, but it still seems like a major longshot. Most promisingly, Mathews is no longer experiencing pain and has stayed in tip-top physical condition. Reporters observed Mathews catching passes Monday and going through individual drills. He's also been spotted doing uphill windsprints and carrying the ball with both hands.

"I'm exactly where I want to be" to play Sunday, Mathews said after taking hits in Thursday's limited practice for the first time since Aug. 9. "It's ultimately up to coach Norv's decision." Acee isn't sure if the team even knows yet whether Mathews would be on a pitch count if he does indeed play. Although Mathews has the look of a RB2 fantasy option, owners should check back Friday afternoon for the official injury report.
