Brexit: Scotland leaving EU is 'democratically unacceptable', says Nicola Sturgeon

SNP leader indicates it is “highly likely” that Parliament will back plans for a fresh

Nicola Sturgeon has put Scotland on course for a new independence vote by autumn 2018 to prevent the country following the rest of the UK out of the EU, as the shockwaves from the Brexit vote threatened to bring an end to the United Kingdom.
Scottish voters backed Remain by 62 per cent to 38 per cent, and the First Minister said it would be “democratically unacceptable” if the country was taken out of the EU against its will.

While not calling for a referendum outright, the Ms Sturgeon said that the Scottish Parliament would begin preparing legislation for a second vote and indicated that it was “highly likely” that Parliament would back plans for a fresh plebiscite.

Following the timetable set out by David Cameron on Friday morning, which could see his successor activating Article 50 to take Britain out of the EU by October, Ms Sturgeon said that the UK would then be on a “two-year path to the EU exit door”.
“If Parliament judges that a second referendum is the best or only way to protect our place in Europe it must have the option to hold one within that timescale,” she said in a statement in Edinburgh on Friday morning.
“That means we must act now to protect that position.”

In advance of any vote, Ms Sturgeon called for Scotland to be fully involved in the renegotiation of Britain’s relationship with the EU, and said she had spoken to London mayor Sadiq Khan who will also be seeking a seat at the negotiating table.

London, like Scotland, voted firmly for Remain and a powerful Holyrood-London axis may now push in renegotiations with the EU for Britain to remain within the Single Market.
"Although we will be outside the EU, it is crucial that we remain part of the single market,” Mr Khan said in a statement yesterday. “Leaving the single market of 500 million people - with its free-trade benefits - would be a mistake. I will be pushing the Government to ensure this is the cornerstone of the negotiations with the EU. It is crucial that London has a voice at the table during those renegotiations, alongside Scotland and Northern Ireland.”
Ruth Davidson, the leader of the Scottish Conservatives, said she shared Ms Sturgeon’s disappointment at the result but said that a second referendum would further destabilise Scotland.
“The 1. 6 million votes cast in this referendum in favour of remain, do not wipe away the 2 million votes that we cast less than two years ago,” she said. “And we do not address the challenges of leaving the European Union by leaving our own Union of nations, our biggest market and our closest friends.”
Scotland rejected independence in its September 2014 referendum, by a margin of 55 per cent to 45 per cent.

Concerns over the future integrity of the UK were also felt in Northern Ireland, where Deputy First Minister Martin McGuiness called for a referendum on a united Ireland as it became clear Britain had voted for Brexit in the early hours of Friday.
Sinn Fein’s Mr McGuiness said that a vote to leave would “run counter to the democratic wishes of the Irish people” after Northern Ireland voted to remain in the EU by a margin of 56 per cent to 44 per cent.

However, a border poll was ruled out by First Minister Arlene Foster and Northern Ireland Minister Theresa Villiers.
Meanwhile, the Irish Taoiseach Enda Kenny said that parliament would be re-called on Monday to discuss the implications of Brexit. Mr Kenny reassured Irish and British citizens that there would be “no immediate changes to the free flow of people, goods and services between our islands”.
Remain campaigners warned in the run up to the vote that Brexit would require the re-establishment of border controls between Northern Ireland and the Republic, as the 310-mile boundary between the two countries would become an external EU border.

Donald Trump is tweeting about Scotland and Brexit. It’s as ignorant as you’d expect.

Donald Trump is in Scotland today, and he has some opinions about Great Britain’s vote to leave the European Union:

This tweet is yet another example, as if we needed one, of how Trump is often uninformed on the major public policy issues of the day.

Scotland isn’t the reason the Brexit vote succeeded. Far from it: 62 percent of Scots voted to remain in the EU.
View image on Twitter

Beyond all that, the idea of Scotland "taking their country back" is a fraught and complicated one. In 2014, Scotland held a referendum on whether to leave the United Kingdom, and the measure failed.
But after the Brexit vote, Scotland’s first minister, Nicola Sturgeon, says it’s "highly likely" that there will be a second referendum, as it is "democratically unacceptable" for Scotland to be pulled out of the EU against its will.
So Trump could end up being right about Scotland — by accident, and for all the wrong reasons. Plus, the reason he’s in Scotland today in the first place has nothing to do with Brexit. He’s there to promote a golf course he owns.
However, as Vox’s Zack Beauchamp has explained, this doesn’t mean that Trump knows nothing about Brexit. He may not even know the word "Brexit," but he does know that it’s motivated by the kind of anti-immigrant sentiment he supports. He understands the parallels between the reactionary nationalism in Britain and the reactionary nationalism of his own campaign, and he wants to see those same forces triumph in America.

Yes he just arrived in Scotland because that's where his Golf courses are, and quite rightly he said the place (UK) WAS GOING WILD.

Because the only place that had a EU referendum was the UK.

Scotland did not hold a referendum the UK DID.

Scotland is not even a member of the EU.

So Trump was correct.

As where is other tweets on the Brexit
Getting ready to open the magnificent Turnberry in Scotland. What a great day, especially when added to the brave & brilliant vote.

So funny, Crooked Hillary called BREXIT so incorrectly, and now she says that she is the one to deal with the U.K. All talk, no action!

"@DarrenWaggener: @realDonaldTrump What has happened in the UK in the last 12 hours is exactly what will happen in November..vote TRUMP 2016

Many people are equating BREXIT, and what is going on in Great Britain, with what is happening in the U.S. People want their country back!

Crooked Hillary called it totally wrong on BREXIT - she went with Obama - and now she is saying we need her to lead. She would be a disaster

Singer Lily Allen HUMILIATES Trump After His Ignorant Brexit Comments (VIDEO)

Posted by Wes Williams on 24 Jun 2016

Donald Trump is a man who uses words. A lot of words. It seems sometimes that he uses so many words that what he forgets what he said, then says something that completely contradicts it. That’s what happened when he commented on the UK’s “Brexit” vote while in Scotland.
The presumptive GOP nominee tweeted his joy over the “leave” vote upon his arrival in Scotland.
The problem with that comment is that in Scotland a majority of citizens voted “remain.” Pop singer Lily Allen called him on the error.
Allen’s reply was just one of many brilliant comments on Trump’s tweet. Some reminded the clueless billionaire that Scots call their home their “country.” And their country — Scotland — voted overwhelmingly to remain in the EU.
Now you might think that, after being chastised for not knowing that the four states that make up the UK — England, Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland — are referred to as “countries,” Trump would have just STFU and gone about his business. But this is Trump we’re talking about, so he had more to say. Upon his arrival at his Turnberry golf course the real estate mogul was asked his opinion about the result of the vote. He replied,
I think it’s a great thing that’s happened. It’s an amazing vote, very historic. People are angry all over the world. They’re angry over borders, they’re angry over people coming into the country and taking over and nobody even knows who they are.
They’re angry about many, many things in the UK, the US and many other places. This will not be the last.
OK, so despite his apparent goof in suggesting that Scotland was on board with the Brexit vote, Trump to that point had been consistent in saying that he believed the result was a good thing for the UK. But then he stepped up to the podium and his message seemed to change, thanks to his insatiable desire to attack President Obama and Hillary Clinton. Trump said,
I was actually very surprised that President Obama, that he would have been so bold as to tell the people over here what to do.
I think that a lot of people don’t like him and a lot of people voted — I think if he had not said it, the result might have been different. But when he said it, people were not happy about it and I thought it was totally inappropriate.
He then attacked Clinton by saying that “she (Hillary) doubled down and did the same thing.”
Remember, all of that came out of the mouth of the same guy who has been telling Mexico for months that they are going to pay for his border wall. I guess we can give Trump credit for one thing: he is remarkably consistent in his inconsistency.
Here’s Trump blaming President Obama for the results of the Brexit vote, via YouTube:

Trump baffles with bizarre appearance in Scotland

Trump skips politics on Scotland trip (probably a good idea)

Earlier this month, Donald Trump was asked about the upcoming vote in the U.K. about leaving the European Union. The reporter asked, “And Brexit? Your position?” Trump replied, “Huh?”

“Brexit,” the reporter repeated. “Hmm,” Trump responded, apparently unfamiliar with the term.

With this exchange in mind, consider what the presumptive Republican presidential nominee said on Twitter this morning:
“Just arrived in Scotland. Place is going wild over the vote. They took their country back, just like we will take America back. No games!”
What Trump may not realize, or really even be able to fully understand, is that Scotland is “going wild” because Scottish voters overwhelmingly voted against leaving the E.U. Locally, people aren’t celebrating – because they see this as a disaster.

Trump proceeded to hold a press conference in Scotland, against the backdrop of one of the most important political moments in the modern history of the United Kingdom, where he spoke at great length, and in great detail, about his new golf resort. The Republican candidate boasted about refurbished holes on his course, plumbing, putting greens, and zoning considerations.

Even by the low standards of Donald J. Trump, it was among the most baffling press conferences anyone has ever seen. The entirety of Scotland is reeling; the future of the U.K. and the continent is uncertain; and an American presidential candidate arrived to deliver a testimonial about a country club and how fond he is of the design of a golf course.

Wait, it gets worse.

Asked about economic turmoil and the degree to which the Brexit results are undermining the value of the British pound, Trump relied that the market decline is good news – for him.

“If the pound goes down, more people are coming to Turnberry, frankly,” he said, referring to the location of his resort. “For traveling and for other things, I think it very well could turn out to be positive.”

In a generational moment for the United Kingdom, Trump’s principal concern is what this means for Trump.

He added that as far as he’s concerned, golf courses are like countries. Trump wasn’t kidding.

When NBC News’ Katy Tur asked the presidential candidate whether he’s traveling with any foreign policy advisors who’ve spoken to him about Brexit, Trump replied that he’s been in touch with his team – but “there’s nothing to talk about.”

He then suggested yesterday’s vote was President Obama’s fault.

I argued yesterday that Trump’s trip to Scotland was a mistake. A day later, it’s clear I wildly understated matters.

Look, I know Trump doesn’t know what he’s doing. I realize that he’s in over his head. I understand that the trip to Scotland was about giving one of his investments a high-profile boost, unrelated to his campaign for the nation’s highest office. But the fact remains that arriving in Scotland today, of all days, created an incredible opportunity for Trump to look and act like a president – or short of that, someone who’s at least vaguely aware of current events.

This was a test he failed so spectacularly, it’s as if Trump isn’t even trying to succeed.

The word “disqualifying” is probably thrown around a little too often, but in this case, if Trump didn’t prove this morning that he’s manifestly unprepared for the White House, honestly, what more would it take?

Good to see he is despised on both sides of the Atlantic:

Donald Trump deserves his frosty reception in Scotland

Anthony Baxter Bully-boy antics and broken promises to build the ‘greatest luxury golf resort in the world’ have driven the billionaire’s reputation into the rough

As the Donald descended from the steps of Trump Force One and attempted to shield his wayward hair from the easterly winds sweeping across the Tarmac of Aberdeen airport, he would have expected a frosty reception. Trump, ignoring the record-breaking petition calling for him to be banned from the UK for “hate speech”, is in Scotland as part of a whistlestop tour of his two Scottish golf courses. The first port of call will be Turnberry – now renamed Trump Turnberry – after an investment claimed by the Trump Organisation to be £200m. But it is at his Menie estate in Aberdeenshire where the Mexican flags are flying high.

Michael Forbes and David Milne, who were among the residents Trump threatened with compulsory purchase orders when they refused to sell him their properties to make way for a luxury golf resort, have hoisted the flags in a show of solidarity with the people of Mexico. Trump, of course, has pledged to build a 2,000-mile wall along the Mexican border “very inexpensively” to stop “rapists and drug dealers” from entering the US if he becomes president. And as the residents of the Menie estate know only too well, Trump has form on walls.
As I documented in my first Trump film, You’ve Been Trumped, at the crack of dawn one morning in 2010, the billionaire’s bulldozers sprang into action and began dumping thousands of tons of earth around the homes of local residents Susan Munro and David Milne, after the tycoon had branded their houses ugly. Trump’s builders (who had no planning permission for these works, according to the residents) had already been caught on camera, burying trees in an enormous hole next to the mounds of earth piled up to shield Forbes’s farm from the view of Trump’s golfers. Trump had blasted Forbes on national television for “living like a pig” and his working farm “a pigsty”.

In many ways, Trump’s loss-making development at the Menie estate is a microcosm of what’s been going on during his run for the White House. When Trump pledged to be the “jobs president”, Scots were quick to remember his broken promises on jobs. Trump claimed he would create 6,000 jobs through his golf course resort and spend £1bn building the “greatest luxury golf resort in the world”. In fact, no “resort” was ever built. Around 100 jobs have been created on the Menie estate and a single golf course is in operation, along with a granite-clad clubhouse. It is estimated he has spent less than 5% of the original investment pledged. Plans for a second golf course have yet to materialise – much to the relief of local residents who fear it would destroy another stretch of wild dunes.

The non-partisan website PolitiFact has determined that Trump’s campaign statements are riddled with an astounding number of outright falsehoods. That’s hardly news to Forbes, who has the phrase “NO MORE TRUMP LIES” daubed on one of his farm sheds. Forbes has watched for more than a decade as the Trump claims and promises have come to nothing. The 450-bedroom hotel has never been built. The 1,500 houses failed to materialise. Instead a golf course for the wealthy now stands between him and his salmon fishing boat, with Forbes complaining he is unable to access the beach to fish.

Trump claimed his Menie estate golf course would be “environmentally perfect”. But in fact it destroyed the ability of the sand dunes to move and shift naturally, something that was highlighted by every credible environmental group in the land when his plans were first submitted.

Trump also insists he has been a good neighbour. But local residents think otherwise. In April, a woman walking on the dunes near Trump’s golf course was charged by police and accused of “a disgusting and shameful act” by the Trump Organization. Her crime? Answering a call of nature. This incident shook local residents, who had hoped the police had learned lessons after spending years appearing to act like a private security force for Trump. I should know. The police arrested me and threw me in jail, for daring to ask why Molly Forbes who is now 92, had her water supply cut off by Trump’s bulldozers.
He has used his money and access to power and the media to intimidate ordinary people
The bullying of local residents and failure to deliver on economic promises are perhaps the main reasons why the billionaire’s popularity rating in Scotland is at rock bottom. Former first minister Alex Salmond, who once enthusiastically welcomed the Trump development, now says the billionaire “couldn’t get elected the dog catcher” in Scotland. And as Trump steps up the rhetoric in his campaign to be president, with ideas such as banning all Muslims from the US, it is little wonder that Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen finally saw sense and stripped him of the ludicrous honorary degree he received in 2010.

While there has been endless debate about the many outrageous statements that Trump has made during the presidential campaign, the events at the Menie estate prove that what Trump says and what he does are two very different things. Here he used his money and access to power and the media to intimidate ordinary people; he made outrageous promises to hoodwink the gullible (including, alas, the Scottish government); and he showed a breathtaking disdain for the environmental toll of his relentless pursuit of personal gain. It is a cautionary tale for Americans going to the ballot box in November, and for the people of Britain, who have lost, for ever, an irreplaceable part of our common natural heritage.

Trump claimed his Menie estate golf course would be “environmentally perfect”. But in fact it destroyed the ability of the sand dunes to move and shift naturally, something that was highlighted by every credible environmental group in the land when his plans were first submitted.

The European elite forgot that democracy is the one thing Britain holds most dear

More people – 17,410,742 – voted Leave on Thursday than have ever voted for anything in British history.

The most precious thing this country has given the world is the idea of parliamentary democracy. Yesterday, I believe the British people have spoken up for democracy in Britain and across EuropeBoris Johnson
