Not a fan of the notion that most european games are fixed, but watching the chelsea game yesterday really, that 10 odds for besiktas away win, and what around 15 for halftime fulltime, and watching the way some chelsea players reacted in certain telling situations, makes one think, and wonder whether roman, a few of the chelsea squad and besiktas management hadn't come to a mutualy satisfactory settlement fot the game, if you know what i mean...

Of course such things one can not know for a fact, but i reckon most probably than not it did happen, mafioso roman has both the incentives and the means for such a thing...

The weight of those money would've sunk the prices everywhere, and it was not the case yesterday.

possibly, but...

a. i am saying he made a hefty sum not paid back the million pounds.
b. considering the amount of money bet on chelsea, and the almost minimal amount bet on the besiktas away win (which was almost zip compared to the draw or the +1 1/2 handicap) i dont think that a few millions of pounds bet on the away win would have made much diffence, just go a short way towards balancing the action.

The line on Chelsea stayed pretty steady at about 1/3 until kick-off. A shame as I had backed them early on at this price expecting it to fall as the week progressed but the line move I anticipated never materialised.

The big money this week looked to be on Arsenal whose price dropped from typically 10/11 to typically 5/7 on Tuesday afternoon.

as much as this might be an oxymoron, the big money does not move a line, the big money is there to be bet, period, and books accept it, cuz it's the big money period, other than that the big public money moves a line, i you catch my drift.

to make myself clear, there's no need to move a line if the money is onesided, and you know the partied involved, the only way to move a line is if you get haphazard and one sided bets, besides the biggest books are in on such shit, trust me, i ve worked there, and i had buddies who worked there much more...

JackDee,

I understand what you are saying but I just don't buy it. The Chelsea players, management and Abramovic are all multi-millionaires.

Chelsea are already raking it in. They charge rip-off prices to the fans who cough up the money for tickets, merchandise etc. they have the TV money for matches etc. etc.

Why would they risk everything for a few extra million (which they aren't particularly desparate for) in a dodgy deal with bookies.

How many people would you expect to be involved in such an "agreement". I can't see Ranieri giving a team talk saying "right we need to be 2-0 down by half-time today". It would only take one person to speak out and they would all be in the dock.

The basic fact is Chelsea have signed a great deal of individual stars who are still learning how to play together as a team. It doesn't help that Ranieri chops and changes so much also. Personally I am surprised that this was their first defeat.

If you are looking for betting scams I think you would be better focusing on teams in lower divisions who actually have something to gain from it.

"The Chelsea players, management and Abramovic are all multi-millionaires."

Yes, but abramovic is a shady russian mafioso (not that most multimillionaires are not mafiosi of some type) and is not throwing millions out of the window just for the sake of his vanity, vanity surely has a lot to do with his investment in chelsea, but i am more than certain he not only wants his money back at some point, but he's aiming at a long term profit too.

"Why would they risk everything for a few extra million (which they aren't particularly desparate for) in a dodgy deal with bookies."

I don't think they d risk much really. Such shit rarely hits the proverbial fan, because even if the involved parties (uefa, bookmakers, other teams) become aware of such "dodgy deal" it's not to their interests to have it become public as it would eventually do more harm than good, tarnishing their collective reputation and that of the sport. Actually, the only real loser in a possible chelsea set up would be the vast square betting public, who considered chelsea a "banker".

"How many people would you expect to be involved in such an "agreement". I can't see Ranieri giving a team talk saying "right we need to be 2-0 down by half-time today". It would only take one person to speak out and they would all be in the dock."

It only takes a few players really, goalkeeper, a defender, and a couple of midfielders say. The man paying their multimillion salaries, takes each one aside for a few moments after training, and goes "you dont have to be 100% tonight, blah blah". Even footballers can figure this simple equation out, i want to get my millions, the boss suggested i dont try too hard tonight, hence why should i. (Try replaying one of besiktas goal, where desaille (i think) "slips", and the goallie tries to stop the besiktas attacker coming out of his area more like waving a cab or something). As far as speaking out goes, why would anyone risk losing his millions? Why would anyone risk messing with the russian mafia? It's not like their in on some hideous crime and they ll be bogged by guilt and re*****, just another fix sports event, happens all the time.

"The basic fact is Chelsea have signed a great deal of individual stars who are still learning how to play together as a team. It doesn't help that Ranieri chops and changes so much also. Personally I am surprised that this was their first defeat."

Ι am not surprised either, and chelsea is indeed not functioning as a team, but i wouldnt be surprised either if a fix was in.

Yes, indeed for the sake of his vanity like other 95% of club owners in Europe, with a few notable exceptions European football is not a business at all and the well-being of a club solely depends on the passion and deep pockets of the owner.

i beg to differ on this point, while no expert in fiscal analysis of european clubs, my knowledge and experience of the field has taught me that football is indeed a business and a lucrative one for that matter. Aside for the past few years where there's been a decline in the financial soundness of european football, mainly due, as per usual, to overestimation of the market and subsequent losses. Of course it may not be AS profitable as say, what, the tuna canning bussiness, it both prestigious does pay, the players are the ones touted about for their big salaries (the vast minority of players that is) but the owners are turning a buck as much as anyone else. Besides, bear in mind that most of them gain huge local, national, or international fame and most importantly voter support by fans, and hence acquire the power to advance other financial endeavours of theirs. So even if owners may not gain directly they do so indirectly.

Let's take an all too common example. I am a factory owner in say a small town near cardiff and also own the local team, who are the politicians going to give the tax write offs and gornmental monetary "aid", to me with all the crowd/voter support, fame and power or to some nobody local rival factory owner. Football and politics have always been very closely related, and most of these guys who own clubs are not only doing it for vanity or love of the sport, but to advance their financial interests.

Whilst we are on the topic of hidden reasons for Chelsea's Champions League defeat how about this one.

Chelsea lost because there was a bad atmosphere amongst a group of their players who have off-field pressures building on them.

These pressures are the knowledge that they raped a girl at the weekend who has since reported the incident to the police and the story has now become front page news on the British newspapers although the players involved have not been publically identified.

this is slowly but steadily into a soap opera, lol, but you are right jack, this whole rape thing could factor in here.

from an article in the sun i just read, link posted here by onside, it seems the player aka gang rape instigator is black, english, and plays for the national team...

AND (i rolmfao with this one):

"Beckham sister was out next night with probe lad "

"The player looked happy and relaxed as he drank with hairdresser Jo at trendy Rouge bar, before moving on to the exclusive Wellington Club where they stayed until the early hours."

"DAVID Beckham’s sister went out on the town with one of the Premiership players under investigation the night after the alleged gang rape, The Sun can reveal."

and you d think with all that cash her footballer bro has got she could afford a decent facial lift make over.
