Too bad he couldn't give 1 of the best QB's a D to work with besides his first few years

Marino is one of the few great Qbs who really never had either a really good defense or a running game to help win a SB

The AFC was hardly stacked during Shula's run with Marino as well, the NFC was clearly the dominant conference by a mile during that era.

The Bills were a superior team on paper, but whose fault is that? Shula had ample time to build and mold a team around Marino.

Great coach but his all time wins masks a big failure in his career.

1972 Dolphins had to play the AFC Championship game of the road as the playoffs were rotated not earned. Pretty dumb. But makes it even more earned I guess

Those Bills teams from 1988-1993 were just SOLID. Fins were really good in 1990, 1992, and 1993 (before Marino went down) but just couldnt get past those bills teams

for what one undefeated season. his lifetime wins record is due to longevity. he failed miserably with dan marino. just an average coach at best.

no running game or defense didnt help either. When the fins finally had a decent defense, the bills were just a better team

Anyone who is a head coach in professional football for 33 years and only had two losing
seasons is one hell of a coach in my book. The man had 18 seasons of ten or more wins.

Shula's biggest disappointment/embarrassment was losing to the NY Jets as a 17 point
favorite in 1969. I remember I was in college and won $22 dollars on the Jets. That was
big money to me back then and I was a big Joe Namath/Alabama fan.

Shula had some great quarterbacks including Johnny Unitas, Bob Griese and Dan Marino
during his career.

Mr. Shula represented professional football well during his lifetime.

Sad day - Clearly a great man ! When a man can inspire other Alphas to be their best & then rise to the top of their industry you have to give them their due...

On a another note you don't see teams carry their coach of the field any more......maybe the last one was Parcells ?

Whether you like or dislike Shula, think he was great or think he was overrated, he was a legend in Miami.

And his RIP thread shouldn't be filled with negative opinions.
