With Wally Pipp firmly engrained at first base, the New York Yankees offered 21-year-old Lou Gehrig to the Boston Red Sox in exchange for Phil Todt. Boston refused. Todt played six more years for the Red Sox, batting .258, and hitting 56 home runs. Gehrig is one of the greatest players to ever take the field.

:103631605 Its all good now, I just found this tidbit noteworthy....Yankees tried to trade the Iron Horse, and Boston said 'No Thanks':nono5:

Did anybody see the TOP TEN worst front office moves as voted on by ESPN?

How in world the FALCONS allowing Brett Favre to escape was not in the top ten was a total blunder!!

Hawkeye171 and myself put it as high as #2, behind the RED SOX Babe Ruth fiasco.

What about the Steve Young. He go from the Tamps to the SF. And then look and see what happens.

So not only did they trade the greatest sports figure of alltime before he went on to hit another 650+ homers, they said no thanks when NYY offered a 21yr old yankee name Lou Gehrig....

Thats 1100+ homeruns and a century of winning they Sox lost out on...

The Gehrig blunder gets no headlines for some reason...

Agree Gehrig as great as he is remembered by, he's more remembered for his streak, but Gehrig was only very slightly statistically lower than BABE RUTH....Gehrig was almost as great as BABE...

gambler- I thought some would find that tidbit interesting...

If I am not mistaken, they had a shot at Jackie Robinson also.
The American League was way behind the curve when it came to signing the early black ballplayers...

IMO that's the main reason the National League dominated the AllStar game for two decades...all the great black players were in th NL.

The Yanks could have had both Hank Aaron and Willie Mays in the early 50's but let them go to the National league. Baseball is full of coulda hads. The Yanks could of signed Curt Schilling in stead of Kevin Brown last year but didn't. Hindsight is always 20-20.
