You can save the files to the server no problem, but depending on what kind of files they are the PCs won't be able to open them. Is the Mac able to see the server?
Do your Macs have tcpip protocol on them? If so, they can access Mac files and open them from the server. If not, you will have to have the Mac protocol on the server.
In order for 2 computers to communicate with each other they have to both have the same protocol.
I have not purchased the mac yet so I can get whatever I need.
Reason for the Mac is that some clients bring information that is in Mac format and it would be easier to just work with the Mac version of the program than converting it everytime.
purpose of the server is because I don't want to file documents on a stand alone computer (probably laptop). If it is stored on the server, the files will be backed up and there will be no worries about confidential information in the unlikely event the laptop gets stolen or damaged.
If the server is going to be running Microsoft software there will be an appletalk protocol that you may need to load in order for it to connect, but there shouldn't be any problem doing that.

That used to be like that five years ago. Nowadays, nobody is running AppleTalk and those older Macs that needed it are history as well. There should not be a problem whatsoever.
