You know when I was young, I used to be one of the few white people to ride the bus around East LA to get to downtown. I always marvelled at how it felt to be the one of maybe three people, drive included, who spoke English while 40 other people were speaking Spanish. Now at long last I felt like I was on the other side! Take the bus from Quepos to Manuel Antonio and you will run into the same ratio, except everyone is speaking English. It got even more anglophone here around Manuel Antonio, but no big deal.
And Chips if you think those buses are scary, do what I did and ride it STANDING UP! I dont know how weak your knees must be, but I had not an ounce of fear. I was more concerned about my feet screaming at me than if the driver could handle the next turn. Come on, taxi rides are more scary than that! And what exactly do you want me to write about the so-called dark side for? I surely could talk about it as I have a friend that I sometimes stay with that lives in a Barreal, not exactly Escazu. I have seen both sides and I wrote what I did because the audience I target here would never be found in a cantina in Barreal or any other lower class neighborhood. I didnt stay in a fancy hotel and had a rather interesting walk to get to my hotel some nights. Once again it didnt bother me a bit, but I am sure a lot of people that go around wearing bermuda shorts with a camera around their neck that scream out "GRINGO" wouldnt feel so safe, but once I doubt many people reading here would feel comfortable going on trips as I do.
The whole point of what I wrote was just to give a bit of information and narrative on things you dont see in tour guides. Lots of people come here asking if they should vacation down in CR and I am here to say as long as you dont think you are coming to Kauai or something like that, you probably can manage. The language barrier is nearly nothing, I speak passable Spanish but more times than not find that the person I am talking to replies in English. There is a wealth of places to go and adventures to be undertaken here and I think everyone should see it once. And if you want to find out more about the industry and put some faces to the names here you will be enjoy a few days in San Jose too. If the town scares someone so much they can always just shack up at the Courtyard in Escazu and take a $4 cab ride everywhere they go. Bottom line is there is no reason not to come for a visit and chances are very good nothing bad will happen to anyone that does come down.
