Not sure what you mean, instead of putting money in IRA, you try to put the money in other places?
Or you just buying the stocks/mutual funds yourself using the money you put in IRA?

If you like the feature offered by IRA, better stay with it, put maximum money into it every year, and not to do early withdrawal. And you can combine it with dollar cost average strategy

Got a buddy who doesnt have that much money, but truly believes he can take his IRA $$ and place it on stocks he likes. IRA is making about 8% maybe less. He thinks he can make around 15% on his own. Is it worth it?? I gave him a no comment on this matter.

IRA is a bucket, you can use the contribution to buy and sell investments as you wish. If you open the IRA account with a stockbroker, I believe you can buy and sell single stocks using the money in your IRA account, as well as mutual funds.

The drawback is that the money has to stay in the IRA account for the required length of time. But it offers tax-deferred growth, which is very important.

You can certainly beat the market average on your own, but you better know what you are doing and have the discipline to do it.

You can buy and sell stocks in an IRA. No need to cash out the IRA. Only reason to cash it out is if it needs to be spent and there is no other possible source. Taking out of IRA to invest in the market is beyond idiotic.

If someone has to cash out his IRA to fund his needs, he has a lot to work on in regard to his financial planning.
