Hey Radio, I think you need to reconsider what you are saying, I understand that you "think" that all of what you said is correct. But think about it with a logical train of thought. Competition forces better service and lower prices, otherwise it's hard to stay in business.

IMHO I doubt that the prices of cell phones for example go lower, we are talking about 8 dollars/month with no cancellation fee, I don't think it can get lower than that or may be I am missing something

In a market as small as CR there is not really enough space for 3,4 or more providers

The ONLY good thing that I believe would come from opening up the monopolies is that the bill that the central goverment has from ICE etc to support their companies will be lower and that will decrease the goverments deficit

None of the private/public systems are perfect, I personally hate the unions and thats the one thing that might help in getting rid of them , pretty much everyone is feed up with them

I'll tell you Ghost, after living here for 10 years, and living all over Costa Rica, it's all ICE. I will tell you that no matter how many people tell you that ICE only works with the telephones is just plane misinformed. The smaller companies that maintain the power lines, transformers etc. do so because they work directly for ICE in one form or another. The lines and poles and whatever are from ICE. Just for a little more worthless information, opening the telecommunications here or the electric company here is very scary for Costa Ricans as is change. So, anyone here from Costa Rica and disagree with the changes to be made in the future, get over it. Welcome to the 21st century. Change and information is the wave of the future.

"Change and information is the wave of the future."

I am from here and I want the change, I am not a fool to believe that it will end up in lower prices than what we have, I will settle if we get the services we need though

On the other hand the globilization is not only affecting us here but the US too, they also need to get over it when they outsource their IT jobs to India for example. That is costing hundreds of thousands of US jobs in more fields than just IT, it turned out to be it didnt work quite right like they expected.

Well I'll tell ya' wolfie, I am not looking for lower prices. I cannot afford to nickel and dime my needs like clean water and air, electricity and communication. I want service not lower prices. I had a neighbor who worked for ICE and did you know why he was on strike not too long ago. Beacuause if he didn't they would have fired him and they paid him on top of it. Price wars, that's not why we need other companies here, it's the lask of service we are supposed to conform to. I am not conformist and I don't beleive that I should have to suffer just because the Costa Rican gov't. says we are supposed to. Don't fight reform fight injustice.

"I want service not lower prices"

and I agree with that but there is also people who can't/doesnt want to pay more for how it is already, the best thing that could happen is that they allow another company(ies) and that they regulate their prices somehow (not sure how to do that , all the ideas I have heard dont work) so that both kinds of service exist

ICE if you want
private if you want

same with the internet

with the power thats a whole different story as you cant really have more than one electrical company that runs the circus, in paper there are a bunch of subcompanies that sell power to ICE, in reality none of them are really big projects and a HUGE company is necessary to make the big investments
the thing that as you noted scares ticos is the possibility of another company coming here with millions of dollars, invest, lower the fares temporarily (if necessary) and then once the competition is done and they dominate the market, put the prices so high that only the rich can afford it

so thats it, I guess if they would say

"you can deal with ICE if you want, however if you want better service, installed by tomorrow, no bs etc but at a higher rate then ......deal with abc inc or whatever" would be great, thats how I would like it
