Question...about rank of hands?

The other nite in a home no limit tourney we came across this scenario....the flop was 8-9-10-J-Q unsuited....it was down to 2 players one held Q-5 (unsuited) the other J-Q (unsuited)....some said the pot was to be split others said the pot goes to J-Q....anyways the latter got the pot. Was that the right call?.........thanx

In hold'em the object is to form the best hand USING 5 cards!

So there are 5 community cards and you as the player hold 7.

your object of the game is to form the best hand using 5 out of the 7 cards.

in this case the community cards already form a straight, subsequently, the Q in both your hands and your opposition does not affect the outcome.

THE POT SHOULD BE SPLIT since both of you have a straight....bare in mind there could be a flush on board...but i doubt you spotted it or it was there..
