absolutely not, look up his numbers... without a doubt Honus Wagner was the best.. Just as i consider Babe Ruth the best ever.. doing a little reading on mr. wagner..

1. WAGNER
2. OZZIE

ps- Aparicio has not been mentioned, and is proof he is one of the most underrated SS of all-time.

Omar Vizquel may be 2nd best fielding SS, a hair behind Ozzie Smith...

Also the light hitting Mark Belanger was yet another great glove, no stick SS...Belanger was also the master of the quick tag...'The Blade' however couldn't his his weight , which as yyou can tell by his nickname was not high...Funny thing about Belanger he owned Nolan Ryan, he seemed to hit the fireballers...I was at a game once when the light hitting SS hit two homers off Ron Guidry too...keep in mind he hit about 1 homer every two years lol...

Ripken is the easy pick here, he changed the way the position is played. Clubs then moved outfielders & other position players to play short that could hit for power & Avg. Short stops, were in the old day mostly defensive stars with no offensive pop.

What did Ozzie ever do except a backflip every time he went out and a few circus plays? That hardly makes a man's career. Prove me wrong with some stats.

Speaking of "no range" Pete, he used to dive head first into 2nd base while making sure his hands overextended into a circus move and people called him Charlie Hustle. I will give him the fact that he hit well.

Still waiting on those Ozzie stats.

quote:
jordan has to rank BEHIND babe ruth, wayne gretzky and jackie robinson

babe ruth? he doesnt hold the carrer or single season HR records. take away his HR's and he is nothing worth discussing. i dont need to hear about this loser and how he got on a brontosaurus to get to the stadium. why do people keep talking about these wanks from back then as if they could actually compete in single a ball in todays game. screw them.

robinson? lol. becuase he broke the race barrier that makes him a better athlete? no, it might make him a big part of history in america but lets not get carried away.

gretzky? lol. hes a hockey player. he plays hockey. get it. hockey.

jordan could take just about any 4 losers in his prime and lead them to the title. you cant say that about gretzky or ruth.

no doubt Jordan was great but you have no idea what your talking about, when running down Babe Ruth (and im not an old timer or yanks fan). you can only fairly compare people to other people from their era and my friend Babe out homered entire teams lots of years. Lifetime batting average .343 (Bonds .297 or so).. not to mention the pitching or the fact that he is and always will be an American Icon..

I would think it has to be A-Rod. The survey is a bit unfair since he is still playing but I sure as hell would take him at short if I was starting a team. He can do it all. He may not be the best fielder on the list but is VERY good and an excellent hitter. His current issue as a Yank is hitting with folks in scoring position, he needs to get MUCH better there.

BTW, I would put Jeter at second or third base if I was starting a team.

For the record, for those who bash Jeter, he is not the best short stop statistically but if you watch this guy every day and in the playoffs he is a GREAT player. In "clutch" situations he manages to find that extra range or extra 50 points on his average to get the job done.

Babe a loser, that's a intelligent statement! Babe also did tons of charity work with kids with his free time. How much have you done??

You must not know anything about sports if you belittle the Bambino.

As far as shortstops, Wagner, ARod, Banks way up there, Ripken was a different dimension (endurance with good power), Ozzie a great fielder, probably have no problem with these 5 being among the best at that spot

I understand Babe is great. I know he is a strong piece of sports americana. I know his stats are no joke.

but this is what I see: a chubby guy who swings across his shoulders like a girl (most power hitters of today swing across their chest) and runs the bases like a girl with his arms flapping like a penguin near his shoulders. if he ever made it to first in todays game (possible i guess), he could'nt get more than two steps off the bag becuase he is so slow he would get picked off.

its an age old arguement, the comparison of eras i guess. but look at mike. all lean and muscular low body fat leaps over buildings in a single bound and always there to save the day.

babe was a slugger. jordan? he did anything and everything to win a title becuase his team mates were mediocre. he got steals, blocks, he made passes he made big shots he played big minutes he even won championships with the flu and two guys gaurding him.

i know babe was great but it is frustrating to see people talk about him like he is so great compared to all the other ball players weve seen.
