SANTA ANA – A local animal rescue group is looking for funds and a home for a 9-month-old puppy thrown from a moving car last week.

American Red Cross staff members saw a sedan in Santa Ana slow down and an occupant throw Sandy, an American bulldog-boxer mix, from the car. Sandy was limping and the staffers immediately took her to Imperial Highway Animal Clinic in Yorba Linda.

"I'm an animal lover myself and it made me sick to my stomach to think of somebody throwing the dog out of the car," said Red Cross worker Matt Catanzaro,, who helped rescue the dog.

Veterinarians said Sandy was limping because of an existing knee condition and will require knee surgery. She also needs to be spayed, vaccinated and equipped with a microchip. The total cost to meet her needs is about $1,750.

Sandy was taken to Anaheim Hills-based Love 4 Canines, which is taking care of the dog, seeking donations for the surgery and searching for a permanent home for the puppy.

"She is the sweetest little dog," said Madison Burtchaell a volunteer with the group. "Why you would throw an animal from a moving car is beyond me."

To donate to or adopt Sandy, contact Love 4 Canines at www.love4canines.org or call Imperial Highway Animal Clinic at 714-996-7610.

She is just a dog, there are thousands of pets put down each day and nobody blinks an eye. Because this particular one makes the paper everyone is a dog lover. Who ever did this is a bad person, I was just LQQKing to solve the problem now rather than later. I luv dogs and cats leave me alone

Loved everyones heartfelt comments. Won't mention crusev6ca (morons aren't capable of compassionate thought). My questions is - how many of you who took the time to post comments also took the time to call and donate to help this little girl out? I'm far from rich and have too many of my own pets but called as soon as I read this article and donated what I could. Give a little - get a lot back.

People who cause harm to the defenseless are the most sick and twisted individuals in our society. These people are cowards to their core, they would never attempt to pull this sort of stunt on any creature which could do something about it, they prey on the weakest.

Guaranteed the person who tossed this puppy out the widow has committed assault, rape, battery, maybe murder, something involving violence...

We have all those cameras along the freeways...can't they use them to grab the plate? American Red Cross people will surely remember the day and time...I am sure they are recorded somewhere...

But then there are people like cruzv6ca, their apathy and utter disregard for society creates another disastrous element...people who could care less about anything than themselves...these are the types who voted the Nazis into power.
