Bandar Seri Begawan - With the prestigious Euro 2004 soccer championship in Portugal just days away, the police here has cautioned against illegal betting syndicates trying to cash in on the Euro 2004 fever.

Betting on football matches is an offence in Brunei.

Die-hard local soccer fans will have to burn midnight oil as some of the matches will be played at the crack of dawn. Productivity at work is expected to be affected between June 12 and July 4. However, the good news is, it also coincides with the second term school holiday, which is from June 13 to 27.

The much-awaited game will be the Group A fixture between England and France that will be played on June 13. Another eagerly awaited group stage match will be between Holland and Germany on June 15.

"Of course, sluggishness at work and sick leave will be the norm during the championship. But I hope my boss would be considerate enough as this is a once-in-four year tournament that I should not miss," said an employee.
